Keider Montero Continues Dominant Run, Emerging as Worthy Pitcher to Pick Up?

Detroit Tigers starting pitcher/relief pitcher Keider Montero pitched two shutout innings out of the bullpen to earn a win on Wednesday against the Yankees. It was his first appearance since moving to the bullpen after the return of Jack Flaherty last Sunday. The win helped Montero improve to 5-5 with a 3.31 ERA and 3.80 FIP in his 17 games, 15 of which were starts. He has a 1.52 ERA with 15 strikeouts in 23 2/3 innings in his last five games and has been very effective at limiting damage. Montero doesn't have a spot in the rotation right now, but he's worth a look in deep leagues since he has worked so well in multiple roles recently. He will be a top pickup option in most standard formats if he moves back to the rotation at some point later in the season.

Keider Montero Moving to Tigers Bullpen

Detroit Tigers right-hander Keider Montero will shift to his team's bullpen "for now," per Jason Beck of MLB.com. The 25-year-old has made 16 appearances (15 starts) for Detroit so far this season, recording a 4-5 record with a 3.39 ERA, 0.99 WHIP, and 56 strikeouts across 87 2/3 innings. With just a 16.1% strikeout rate, Montero has not provided much swing-and-miss value for fantasy managers. Still, he's limited free passes (5.2% walk rate) and hard contact (7.7% opponent barrel rate). The Tigers have multiple veterans in their current starting rotation who may not be with the team after the trade deadline, which could open the door for Montero to return to a fantasy-relevant role. However, he currently projects for a bulk relief role and can likely be dropped in shallower leagues.

Keider Montero to Start on Sunday

Detroit Tigers pitcher Keider Montero will draw the start against the Miami Marlins on Sunday. It looks like Montero will get the first chance to take the rotation spot of Sawyer Gipson-Long (neck) who landed on the injured list. Montero is no stranger to the starting rotation as he has made nine starts for the Tigers this season. He holds a 4.60 ERA, 1.43 WHIP, and a 58/27 K/BB ratio across 78.1 innings of work this season. The assumption is that Jose Urquidy will follow Montero out of the bullpen as the bulk reliever. Montero won't offer much streaming appeal for this game.

Keider Montero Starting Against Rangers on Saturday

Detroit Tigers right-hander Keider Montero will make his first start of the second half on Saturday at Globe Life Field against the hosting Texas Rangers. This will be Montero's eighth start of the season and his first since he picked up his fourth win on July 7 versus the Tampa Bay Rays by throwing six innings of one-run ball with one walk and four strikeouts. The 25-year-old will begin the second half back in the starting rotation, but it might only be for another couple turns through the rotation. Montero has gone 4-1 this year for Detroit with a 4.02 ERA (5.21 FIP) and 1.37 WHIP with 45 strikeouts and 22 walks in 65 innings over 13 appearances (seven starts). He doesn't carry a ton of fantasy upside with his 6.2 K/9 and 3.0 BB/9 marks, but he does have some sleeper appeal as a streamer on Saturday against a Rangers offense that ranks 26th in OPS (.675).

Brant Hurter Opening, Keider Montero Serving as Bulk Reliever on Friday

Detroit Tigers left-hander Brant Hurter is scheduled to serve as the opener for Friday's contest against the Cincinnati Reds, with right-hander Keider Montero will serve as the bulk reliever, according to the Detroit News' Chris McCosky. It's Hurter's second opening assignment this week after giving up a run in 2 2/3 innings against the Baltimore Orioles on Tuesday. It's possible the 26-year-old southpaw will go several innings in this one, but he's still not a viable fantasy streamer. Hurter has a strong 1.75 ERA and 0.94 WHIP with 34 strikeouts in 36 innings over 19 appearances (two starts) in 2025. Montero has served in a bulk-relief role in three of his last five outings for Detroit, but he hasn't been good in that role, posting an ERA over 7.00. Fantasy managers should be able to find better streaming options on Friday's slate.

Keider Montero Likely To Be Called Up To Start On Tuesday

Detroit Tigers right-hander Keider Montero has a locker room in the team's clubhouse on Monday and is likely to be recalled from Triple-A Toledo to start Tuesday's game against the visiting Boston Red Sox at Comerica Park. It looks like Montero is going to take the starting rotation spot with right-hander Casey Mize (hamstring) currently injured. Although the matchup for his next spot start on Tuesday won't be the greatest -- the Red Sox currently rank sixth in MLB with a .745 OPS -- Montero will still be an interesting fantasy streamer after his last strong outing for the Tigers. The 24-year-old Venezuelan hurler picked up his first win of the year on May 8 in the second game of a doubleheader against the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field by throwing eight innings of one-run ball while walking three and striking out two. He has an ERA of 4.15 in his four big-league starts this year with 15 strikeouts in 21 2/3 innings.

Keider Montero Sent Back To Minors After Spot Start

The Detroit Tigers optioned right-hander Keider Montero back to Triple-A Toledo on Friday after his spot start during the team's doubleheader in Colorado against the Rockies on Thursday. Montero was excellent against the last-place Rockies at hitter-friendly Coors Field in the second game of the twin bill, allowing just one earned run on five hits while walking three and striking out two in eight innings for his first win of 2025. The 24-year-old will go back to the farm for now, but he'll surely be back up in the big leagues when the Tigers need another starter, especially after that strong performance. The good outing lowered his ERA to 4.15 on the season and his WHIP to 1.48 WHIP through 21 2/3 innings and four starts. Montero has flashed some high-end potential through his first 120 innings after debuting in 2024, but he's also been very inconsistent with a below-average 18.2% strikeout rate.

Keider Montero Sent Back To Minors

The Detroit Tigers sent right-hander Keider Montero back to Triple-A Toledo on Sunday after his spot start in a doubleheader on Saturday against the Baltimore Orioles. In his third start of the year over the weekend, Montero gave up only one earned run on four hits while walking two and striking out two in 4 1/3 innings for a no-decision. It was the 24-year-old's best start of the season against a tough opponent, but he'll now head back to the farm to serve as rotation depth for the big-league squad. Montero fanned eight hitters in five innings in his season debut on April 16 against the Milwaukee Brewers but also allowed five earned runs. He has so far been up and down in three starts in 2025 after going 6-6 with a 4.76 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 77:31 K:BB in 98 1/3 innings in his rookie year in 2024. Montero will be a streamer for those in AL-only leagues if/when he makes another start in Detroit.

Keider Montero Starting On Monday Against Padres

With the Detroit Tigers currently using a six-man starting rotation during a busy stretch of their schedule, right-hander Keider Montero will make his second start of the season for Monday's series opener against the San Diego Padres at Comerica Park. He will be on a standard four days of rest after making his season debut last Wednesday against the Milwaukee Brewers, when he allowed five earned runs on eight hits (three homers) while walking one and striking out eight in five innings in a loss. Montero will be facing an even weaker Padres lineup with first baseman Luis Arraez (concussion) heading to the injured list, but he'll still be a shaky DFS streamer after his subpar performance last week. The 24-year-old's command location will continue to be a primary focus after he struggled with both last Wednesday. It's a good bet that Montero will head back to Triple-A Toledo after Monday's outing.

Keider Montero To Start On Wednesday Against Milwaukee

Detroit Tigers right-hander Keider Montero is with the team in Milwaukee and will make the start on Wednesday at American Family Field. Nobody else in the starting rotation is hurt, but manager A.J. Hinch wants to push the rotation back a day during a 23-game, 24-day stretch of games. The 24-year-old Montero will be making his first big-league start of the year for the Tigers after going 6-6 with a 4.76 ERA (5.15 FIP) and 1.33 WHIP with 77 strikeouts and 31 walks in 19 outings (16 starts) over 98 1/3 innings in his rookie season in 2024. The Venezuelan hurler started the year off at Triple-A Toledo by giving up three earned runs on six hits while walking only one and striking out 11 in 9 2/3 inning in his two starts with the Mud Hens. Montero has high-end potential but didn't strike out that many a year ago and was unsurprisingly inconsistent. He'll be a pretty shaky fantasy streamer in Milwaukee.
