Spencer Torkelson Heating Up, Emerging as a Power Bat to Target on the Waiver Wire

Detroit Tigers first baseman Spencer Torkelson got off to a brutal start to the 2026 season, failing to hit a home run through his first 86 plate appearances of the year. However, the 26-year-old burst out of his early-season power outage in a big way, going deep in five consecutive games from April 22 to April 26. Across 124 plate appearances overall, Torkelson is hitting .233/.363/.437 with five home runs, 12 RBI, and 12 runs scored. While Torkelson's 27.4% strikeout rate limits his batting average upside, his 14.5% barrel rate is indicative of his significant power potential. Torkelson has also walked at a 16.1% clip so far this year, which should help keep his place in the Tigers' lineup secure. For fantasy managers searching for power off the waiver wire, Torkelson is a logical target.

Spencer Torkelson Sitting Out Monday's Game in Boston

Detroit Tigers first baseman Spencer Torkelson is not in the team's starting lineup for Monday's series opener in Boston against the Red Sox at Fenway Park, according to MLB.com. Colt Keith will slide across the diamond to play first base while hitting third for Detroit against Red Sox veteran right-hander Sonny Gray. Torkelson could use a day off to begin the week, as the 26-year-old former first overall pick in 2020 out of Arizona State is off to a rough start in 2026. Through his first 21 games, he's hitting .182 (12-for-66) with no home runs, three doubles, six RBI, five runs scored, 14 walks, and 23 strikeouts in 81 plate appearances. He's taking plenty of walks, but his passive approach at the dish so far isn't leading to much production for his fantasy managers. We know Tork has the power to be an asset in all leagues -- he's reached the 30-homer mark in two of his four MLB seasons -- but an adjustment in approach might be needed to turn things around.

Spencer Torkelson Dealing With Forearm Contusion

Detroit Tigers first baseman Spencer Torkelson (forearm) was diagnosed with a right-forearm contusion after he was hit by a pitch during a simulated game in camp on Tuesday, according to Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press. Torkelson exited with a trainer after he was hit by a fastball from reliever Burch Smith. "It was scary," manager A.J. Hinch said. "It's going to happen, whether it's a game or a practice game. From what I know, from afar, we've avoided anything major." The 26-year-old former first overall pick was held out of Wednesday's Grapefruit League contest against the Minnesota Twins as a precaution, but he could be back in action soon. Torkelson hit 31 home runs for the second time in the last three years in 2025, bouncing back from a 10-homer campaign in 2024. Strikeouts are always going to be part of Tork's game, but the high-end power upside is nice for corner-infield depth in fantasy baseball leagues.

Spencer Torkelson Leaves Sim Game Early After Hit-by-Pitch

Detroit Tigers first baseman Spencer Torkelson (forearm) was hit on his right forearm by a pitch during a simulated game in camp on Tuesday and left early with a trainer for treatment, according to Chris McCosky of the Detroit News. It's unclear right now how serious Torkelson's injury is or if it will prevent him from being ready on Opening Day later this month. The 26-year-old former first overall pick in 2020 out of Arizona State hit 31 home runs for the second time in his career last season after clubbing only 10 long balls in 2024, and he added 78 RBI and 82 runs scored in 155 games played while slashing .240/.333/.456 in 649 plate appearances. There's always going to be swing and miss in Torkelson's game, but he cut back slightly on his whiffs in 2025 and showed more plate discipline. Fantasy managers should look at Tork as a power asset later in drafts as corner-infield depth.

Spencer Torkelson Gets Back on Track with Power Surge in 2025

Detroit Tigers first baseman Spencer Torkelson got back on track with 31 home runs and 118 wRC+ across 155 games in the majors last season. Torkelson's offensive contributions fell so much in 2024 that Detroit sent him to Triple-A to get right. However, he bounced back with a full season at the MLB level in 2025, delivering major contributions to the Tigers and his fantasy managers. In addition to the 31 homers and 118 wRC+, he produced a .240/.333/.456 slash line with an 11.1% walk rate and 26.0% strikeout rate. Striking out more than one quarter of the time isn't ideal, but it's a fair trade-off for a player who will hit 30-40 home runs and walk in more than 10% of their plate appearances. Torkelson finds himself at #19 among first basemen in RotoBaller's fantasy rankings for 2026, with an ADP of 186. The rankings place him just behind Willson Contreras, Alec Burleson, and Jonathan Aranda, and just ahead of Kazuma Okamoto, Christian Walker, and Sal Stewart.

Spencer Torkelson in the Game 3 Lineup

Detroit Tigers first baseman Spencer Torkelson (foot) is starting at first base and will hit cleanup for Thursday's deciding Game 3 of the wild-card series against the division-rival Cleveland Guardians and right-hander Slade Cecconi. X-rays came back negative on Torkelson after he fouled a ball off his foot in the Game 2 loss at Progressive Field on Wednesday. The former first-rounder was also hit by a pitch on his hand/wrist, but he's all good and will hit in the heart of the batting order as the Tigers look to vanquish the Guards and advance to the American League Division Series to face the Seattle Mariners. In the first two games of the wild-card series, Tork has one hit in six at-bats with an RBI, a walk, and three strikeouts. The 26-year-old will be looking for a big hit in the winner-take-all game on Thursday, and he'll be a more risky DFS pick while potentially being at less than 100% with his foot.

Spencer Torkelson Expected to Play in Game 3

Detroit Tigers first baseman Spencer Torkelson (foot) was sent for a precautionary X-rays on his right foot after fouling a ball off it in the fourth inning of Game 2 against the Guardians. The X-rays returned negative for any fractures, and manager A.J. Hinch said that he thinks Spencer Torkelson will be good to go for Game 3. In a rough day for Torkelson, he went 0-for-3 with a walk, and he was also hit by a pitch on the hand in the ninth inning. He'll hope for a better and less painful result to Thursday's decisive Game 3, as he and the Tigers look to advance to face the Mariners in the ALDS.

Spencer Torkelson Carries the Tigers to Saturday Night Win

Detroit Tigers first baseman Spencer Torkelson had all the team's offense on Saturday night, going 2-for-4 with a home run while the rest of the lineup combined to go 0-for-23 with four walks. His second-inning solo home run off Logan Allen was the only run in the Tigers' 1-0 win over the Guardians. The Tigers will look to close out a three-game sweep in Cleveland this Sunday against Gavin Williams. Torkelson's homer was No. 20 on the season for the 25-year-old righty, who is still hitting only .238 on the year but has an .853 OPS and has hit safely in nine straight, going 13-for-35 (.371) during that stretch. He's been streaky throughout this season, but he is definitely a mixed-league starter when he's playing as well as he is right now.

Spencer Torkelson Breaks Out of Slump

Detroit Tigers first baseman Spencer Torkelson has been in an ugly slump, but was able to do some damage with the bat on Thursday. Before this game, Torkelson was 2-for-27 over his last seven games prior to Thursday's contest. He got the scoring started with a solo home run off left-hander Jeffrey Springs in the second inning. He would finish this game 2-for-4 with one home run, one RBI, and two runs scored in the win. The slump has certainly hurt his overall numbers, but Torkelson is still putting up his best season of his career. Fantasy managers should continue to hold him through his mid-season slump.

Spencer Torkelson, Javier Baez Out on Tuesday

Detroit Tigers first baseman/designated hitter Spencer Torkelson and shortstop/outfielder Javier Baez are both out of the lineup for Tuesday's contest against the visiting Athletics. Colt Keith is at first base and is batting leadoff, while Trey Sweeney starts at the 6 and is hitting ninth against A's right-hander Luis Severino. Torkelson has had a strong 2025 season with 16 home runs and 49 RBI in 264 at-bats, but he's now been absent for two of the last three games and is in the midst of a 4-for-32 slump at the plate in his last nine games to lower his season slash line to .223/.330/.470. In more of a part-time utility role for Baez in 2025, he has come back from the dead to hit .290/.328/.473 with an .801 OPS, nine homers, 36 RBI and 37 runs scored for the first-place Tigers. Neither Keith nor Sweeney have faced Severino in their careers.
