Spencer Torkelson News
Detroit Tigers first baseman Spencer Torkelson is not in the team's starting lineup on Sunday against the San Francisco Giants. It appears to be a normal day of rest for Torkelson in the series finale against the Gigantes. In his absence, Tyler Nevin will get the start at the cold corner and will hit sixth against Giants right-hander Logan Webb. Torkelson, the first overall pick in 2020, continues to struggle with pitching at the big-league level, as he's gone 12-for-56 (.214) with just one home run, eight RBI and seven runs scored in his first 14 games in 2023. In his first 124 major-league games with Detroit, he's slashing .204/.276/.320 with nine homers, 36 RBI and 113 strikeouts in 463 plate appearances.
Detroit Tigers first baseman Spencer Torkelson will open the 2022 season out of the team's five-hole as they take on the Tampa Bay Rays and left-hander Shane McClanahan on Thursday. Plenty of eyes will be on the 2020 No. 1 overall pick this season after a vastly underwhelming MLB debut that saw him hit just .203 with eight home runs and a .604 OPS across 110 games with the Tigers last season. Despite making plenty of hard contact, Torkelson hit just .268 with one HR and three doubles alongside a .692 OPS across 20 Grapefruit League games this spring. Nonetheless, he should get every opportunity to bounce back with a strong sophomore season in 2023.
It sounds as though Detroit Tigers first baseman Spencer Torkelson will get every chance to earn a regular role at first base for the team in 2023. He will meet with the Tigers hitting coaches this week in Arizona. "We have other options if we need to, but clearly our best team has Spencer Torkelson as a major contributor," manager A.J. Hinch said. The Tigers don't have many other viable options for the cold corner, and Torkelson was the No. 1 overall pick of the 2020 draft, so Detroit has plenty invested in him. The 23-year-old power hitter struggled mightily in his first taste of the majors last year and was optioned to Triple-A Toledo, where he didn't fare a lot better. He's still young, though, and possessed plenty of pop, so he remains very interesting in dynasty/keeper leagues.
