Jacob Waguespack Hopes To Throw A Bullpen This Week

Tampa Bay Rays right-hander Jacob Waguespack (back, shoulder) received injections in his back on Aug. 5 and was hoping to return to throwing bullpen sessions by Tuesday, Aug. 13. Waguespack was moved to the 60-day injured list on May 18. He suffered a right-shoulder injury during his last outing for Triple-A Durham that wasn't expected to require a significant stint on the shelf, but the Rays gained flexibility by recalling him and placing him on the 15-day IL on May 6. The 30-year-old retired all four batters he faced (three strikeouts) in a start in the rookie-level Florida Complex League on June 25 but was then shut down with a lower-back issue, with no timeframe for his return provided. If Waguespack can avoid any further setbacks once he resumes throwing off a mound, he'll have a chance to rejoin the big-league bullpen by the end of the 2024 season.

Jacob Waguespack Could Throw A Bullpen This Week

Tampa Bay Rays right-hander Jacob Waguespack (back, shoulder) resumed a long-toss progression as of Friday and could throw a bullpen session this week. Waguespack suffered from right rotator-cuff inflammation during his last outing at Triple-A Durham that wasn't expected to require a significant stint on the shelf, but he was moved to the 60-day injured list on May 18. He retired all four batters he faced, striking out three of them, in a start in the rookie-level Florida Complex League on June 25. He was then shut down with a lower-back issue. The 30-year-old has been away from the Rays since April 12 but is finally ramping back up and should be able to help the team's bullpen in the big leagues down the stretch, barring another setback.

Jacob Waguespack Dealing With Rotator-Cuff Inflammation

Tampa Bay Rays right-hander Jacob Waguespack (shoulder) suffered a right-shoulder injury in his last outing with Triple-A Durham that isn't expected to require a significant stint on the shelf. Instead of leaving him on the minor-league injured list, the Rays recalled him and placed him on the 15-day IL on Monday. If Waguespack were to suffer a setback, it would required him to be moved to the 60-day IL to clear a spot on the 40-man roster. This way, if he's eventually put on the 60-day IL, he will be eligible to return after serving the minimum 60 days. The 30-year-old made four appearances (one starts) for the Rays before his injury and allowed seven runs (six earned) on 13 hits (one homer) while walking 10 and striking out 11 in just 10 innings.

Jacob Waguespack To Start On Friday

Tampa Bay Rays pitcher Jacob Waguespack will get the starting nod against the San Francisco Giants on Friday. The 30-year-old has been operating as a reliever during the early portion of the season. In three appearances, Waguespack has allowed six runs over six innings of work. He does have experience as a starting pitcher, but Waguespack hasn't made a start in nearly five years. He won't be a recommended streaming option ahead of Friday's slate.

Rays Sign Jacob Waguespack To Minors Deal

The Tampa Bay Rays signed free-agent right-hander Jacob Waguespack to a minor-league deal with an invitation to major-league camp on Monday. Waguespack hasn't pitched in the big leagues since the COVID-shortened 2020 season. In his two years with the Toronto Blue Jays, he had a 5.08 ERA (4.87 FIP) and 1.46 WHIP while walking 38 and striking out 79 in 95 2/3 innings pitched over 27 appearances (13 starts). The 30-year-old pitched for the Orix Buffaloes of Nippon Professional Baseball in Japan in 2023 and had a 4.76 ERA and 1.43 WHIP with 30 walks and 78 strikeouts in 56 2/3 innings over 36 relief appearances. Waguespack will almost certainly open the 2024 back in the US at Triple-A Durham and will serve as organizational relief depth for the Rays.

Jacob Waguespack Lands On Injured List With Back Strain

Toronto Blue Jays right-handed pitcher Jacob Waguespack was placed on the 10-day injured list prior to Thursdays contest against the Yankees due to a strained left back. Things have gone sideways out of relief for Waguespack in 2020, having amassed an 8.15 ERA and 2.04 WHIP across 11 appearances. He becomes the latest Blue Jays pitcher to hit the IL, with the club adding Wilmer Font and T.J. Zeuch as potential reinforcements prior to the game. Rafael Dolis remains the only Toronto reliever that merits much season-long fantasy intrigue across most formats over the final week-plus.

Jacob Waguespack Closes Season On High Note

Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Jacob Waguespack had a relatively solid first season in the majors and his last start of the year on Wednesday was one of the highlights. Waguespack pitched six scoreless innings against the Orioles, allowing four hits and two walks while striking out five and earning his fifth win of the season. Waguespack closes the year with a 4.35 ERA and 1.33 WHIP. He only struck out 63 batters, compared with 29 walks, over 78 innings on the year, so he'll need to improve upon his strikeout rate and K:BB ratio in order to be worthy of draft consideration in deep leagues for 2020.

Jacob Waguespack Roughed Up in Loss

Toronto starter Jacob Waguespack turned in his worst performance of the year on Wednesday night, allowing five runs (three earned) in three innings, picking up the loss against the Braves. Waguespack was undone in the second inning, letting Atlanta bat around as they put five runs on the board. The Toronto rookie had been good as of late, allowing only two runs in the past two starts, and had most recently shut out the Dodgers for seven innings, allowing only one hit and one walk. But don't count on Waguespack as a streamer in his next start, as he'll go on the road to face these same Braves.

Jacob Waguespack Allows Four Runs In First MLB Start

Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Jacob Waguespack allowed four runs on six hits in 4 2/3 innings of work during a 10-4 win over the Boston Red Sox on Tuesday. Waguespack walked three batters while striking out two. The 25-year-old has been used as a long reliever in two other instances this season. He owns a 5.93 ERA to go along with a 1.39 WHIP. At this moment in time, Waguespack has miniscule fantasy value. It is unclear whether or not he will earn another start or return to Triple-A Buffalo.

Jacob Waguespack Likely To Start Tuesday

Toronto Blue Jays manager Charlie Montoyo said that pitcher Jacob Waguespack is likely to start on Tuesday against the Red Sox. Sean Reid-Foley is also a possibility next Thursday in place of Clayton Richard (lat), who landed on the injured list on Sunday. Waguespack, 25, has a 5.00 ERA in nine relief innings with 11 strikeouts for Toronto this season. He's sporting a 5.30 ERA, 1.56 WHIP and 8.9 K/9 in 11 starts and one relief appearance in 52 2/3 innings at Triple-A Buffalo in 2019 and should be avoided at all costs across the board against the strong Boston lineup this week.
