Will Vest Still Worth Targeting After Fourth Blown Save?

Detroit Tigers right-handed reliever Will Vest was garnering some interest off the waiver wire recently with regular closer Kenley Jansen (pelvis) on the injured list. Vest picked up his first save of the year on June 1 and also won his second game of the year on June 7 to peak interest among those desperate for saves, but now that Jansen is back from the IL, Vest's path to save chances is shrinking. Additionally, the 31-year-old veteran blew his fourth save of 2026 in his last appearance out of the bullpen on June 16 against the Houston Astros, allowing an earned run on one hit while walking one in just one-third of an inning. Jansen has been shaky in his own right this year and is 38 years old, but Vest hasn't exactly put himself at the top of the line as a closer handcuff in Detroit with his 2-4 record, 6.45 ERA (3.68 FIP), and 1.48 WHIP with 23 strikeouts and nine walks in 22 1/3 innings. If Jansen gets injured again or demoted from the closer's role, it could be Kyle Finnegan, and not Vest, as the next man up for saves for manager A.J. Hinch. Vest is rostered in just 4% of Yahoo leagues.

Will Vest Deployed in Ninth Inning Again, has he Fully Claimed High-Leverage Role?

Detroit Tigers right-handed reliever Will Vest picked up his second win of the season in the team's 5-4 come-from-behind victory over the visiting Seattle Mariners at Comerica Park on Sunday in the series finale. Vest was deployed in the top of the ninth inning with the team trailing 4-3 and pitched a scoreless inning with one hit allowed and a strikeout before the Tigers walked it off in the bottom of the frame. The 31-year-old veteran blew a save on May 26 against the Los Angeles Angels, giving up a season-high five earned runs, but since then, he's settled down, giving up an earned run on five hits while walking one and striking out six with a win, a save, and a hold for the Tigers. The former 12th-round selection out of Stephen F. Austin State University in 2017 has a bloated 6.53 ERA in 21 outings in 2026, but his FIP sits at a more respectable 3.44, and he is going to continue to see high-leverage work in the Tigers' bullpen with veteran Kenley Jansen (pelvis) on the injured list. Vest is rostered in only 5% of Yahoo leagues.

Will Vest Deployed in Ninth Inning, Is he the Closer to Roster in Detroit?

Detroit Tigers right-hander Will Vest shut the door on the Seattle Mariners on Friday night, allowing a hit and a walk but striking out two in a scoreless ninth inning during his team's 7-3 win. Vest has struggled so far in 2026, recording a 1-4 record with a 6.86 ERA, 1.47 WHIP, 22 strikeouts, and one save across 19 2/3 innings. However, Vest was arguably Detroit's top reliever in 2025, recording a 3.01 ERA and 1.21 WHIP with 75 strikeouts and 23 saves across 64 appearances. Even though Friday's outing was a non-save situation, Vest's usage in the ninth inning could suggest that he is the closer to own in Detroit while Tigers closer Kenley Jansen (pelvis) is on the 15-day injured list due to pelvic inflammation. In deeper leagues, Vest could be worth targeting on the waiver wire as a short-term source of saves.

Will Vest Tallies Five-Out Save for Tigers, Is He the Short-Term Closer?

Detroit Tigers relief pitcher Will Vest closed out his team's 10-9 win over the Rays on Monday night, earning his first save of the season. The 30-year-old righty entered a messy situation in the eighth inning with the bases loaded and one out while his team was holding a 10-5 lead. He gave up a double and a single, allowing four runs to score, but preserved the lead. Things went much more smoothly for Vest in the 1-2-3 ninth inning, finishing with back-to-back strikeouts. He was charged with one run in his 1 2/3 innings, but he still lowered his ERA to 7.23 on the season. His 3.45 FIP and 3.35 xERA indicate he has pitched better than his elevated ERA indicates, but he is still very high-risk after his rough start to the season. Even though he's risky, he does have enough upside to consider from the waiver wire, though, since the Tigers are without closer Kenley Jansen (pelvis) and saves should be available. Vest got the job done on Monday and does have potential to be a short-term source of saves for deep leagues.

Will Vest Closes Out Key Win on Thursday

Detroit Tigers reliever Will Vest mowed down the Cleveland Guardians in a 4-2 win on Thursday for his 22nd save of the year. Vest struck out the side in order, fanning Gabriel Arias, Angel Martinez, and Bo Naylor, to secure a crucial victory for the Tigers and snap an eight-game losing streak. They now have the same record as the division-rival Guardians, who own the tiebreaker for the AL Central crown, and sit one game ahead of the Houston Astros for the last wild-card spot. Vest, meanwhile, has put together back-to-back scoreless outings after he was roughed up in losses on Sept. 16 and Sept. 20. The 30-year-old has recorded a 3.06 ERA with a 1.25 WHIP, 74 strikeouts, and 22 walks in 67 2/3 innings this season.

Will Vest Collects 18th Save

Detroit Tigers reliever Will Vest secured a shutout and notched his 18th save in a 1-0 win over the Chicago White Sox on Wednesday. Vest pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning with a strikeout for his second save in a row. It appeared that recent acquisition Kyle Finnegan had taken the closer role away from Vest, but that might not be the case after all. Vest has both of the Tigers' saves this week, while Finnegan worked a scoreless eighth inning and picked up his first hold on Wednesday. After putting together four straight scoreless appearances, Vest has lowered his ERA to 2.61 with a 1.05 WHIP and 58:15 K:BB in 51 2/3 innings.

Will Vest Earns 17th Save Of Season Monday

Detroit Tigers relief pitcher Will Vest picked up his 17th save of the season in Monday's 2-1 win over the White Sox. Vest entered the game in the bottom of the ninth inning up by one and turned in a 1-2-3 inning with a strikeout. The 30-year-old is having a solid season, converting 17 of 22 save opportunities with five wins, a 2.66 ERA, a 1.07 WHIP, and a 10.13 K/9 rate in 50 2/3 innings of work. The Tigers did trade for former Nationals closer Kyle Finnegan at the trade deadline, who pitched the eighth inning in Monday's game and earned the win. Finnegan has seen the team's most save opportunities in the last 15 days, but Vest should remain a useful fantasy option in deeper roto leagues.

Will Vest Struggles in Non-Save Situation

Detroit Tigers closer Will Vest had a rough outing in a non-save situation during a 7-5 win over the Philadelphia Phillies on Saturday. Vest came in to pitch the bottom of the eighth inning with a 7-3 lead and yielded three hits, including a Bryce Harper two-run homer, to turn the game into a nail-biter. He ended up retiring two batters (both via strikeout) before the Tigers replaced him with the just-acquired Kyle Finnegan. Fortunately for Detroit, Finnegan notched a four-out save to secure the victory. Vest, meanwhile, has been shaky in three of his past four outings. He blew a save Friday and is 16 out of 21 on the year with a 2.85 ERA, a 1.12 WHIP, and 54:15 K:BB.

Will Vest Takes Loss on Saturday

Detroit Tigers closer Will Vest (5-2) took his second loss of the season in a 6-1 game against the Toronto Blue Jays on Saturday. Vest, who hadn't pitched since last Sunday, entered a scoreless game in the eighth inning and wound up delivering his worst performance in over a month. The 30-year-old right-hander yielded two earned runs on three hits with one strikeout to hand the Tigers their 12th loss in 13 games. Detroit's recent slide has led to fewer opportunities for Vest, who has picked up just two saves in three weeks. Even after struggling Saturday, Vest still owns a 2.58 ERA with a 1.04 WHIP, 51:15 K:BB, and 16 saves over 45 1/3 innings.

Will Vest Spotless in Second-Half Debut

Detroit Tigers reliever Will Vest mowed down the Texas Rangers for his 16th save in a 2-1 win on Sunday. Making his first appearance in a week, the right-hander entered with the bases empty and two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning. Vest fanned Wyatt Langford to end the frame and then pitched a 1-2-3 ninth with another strikeout to take down Texas. He needed just nine pitches to record four outs. The 30-year-old lowered his ERA to 2.23 with a 0.99 WHIP and 50:15 K:BB in 44 1/3 innings. With fellow Tigers reliever Tommy Kahnle in the throes of a July meltdown (14 earned runs allowed in 3 1/3 innings), Vest has a firm hold on the closer's job.
