Will Vest Closes Out Key Win on Thursday

Detroit Tigers reliever Will Vest mowed down the Cleveland Guardians in a 4-2 win on Thursday for his 22nd save of the year. Vest struck out the side in order, fanning Gabriel Arias, Angel Martinez, and Bo Naylor, to secure a crucial victory for the Tigers and snap an eight-game losing streak. They now have the same record as the division-rival Guardians, who own the tiebreaker for the AL Central crown, and sit one game ahead of the Houston Astros for the last wild-card spot. Vest, meanwhile, has put together back-to-back scoreless outings after he was roughed up in losses on Sept. 16 and Sept. 20. The 30-year-old has recorded a 3.06 ERA with a 1.25 WHIP, 74 strikeouts, and 22 walks in 67 2/3 innings this season.

Will Vest Collects 18th Save

Detroit Tigers reliever Will Vest secured a shutout and notched his 18th save in a 1-0 win over the Chicago White Sox on Wednesday. Vest pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning with a strikeout for his second save in a row. It appeared that recent acquisition Kyle Finnegan had taken the closer role away from Vest, but that might not be the case after all. Vest has both of the Tigers' saves this week, while Finnegan worked a scoreless eighth inning and picked up his first hold on Wednesday. After putting together four straight scoreless appearances, Vest has lowered his ERA to 2.61 with a 1.05 WHIP and 58:15 K:BB in 51 2/3 innings.

Will Vest Earns 17th Save Of Season Monday

Detroit Tigers relief pitcher Will Vest picked up his 17th save of the season in Monday's 2-1 win over the White Sox. Vest entered the game in the bottom of the ninth inning up by one and turned in a 1-2-3 inning with a strikeout. The 30-year-old is having a solid season, converting 17 of 22 save opportunities with five wins, a 2.66 ERA, a 1.07 WHIP, and a 10.13 K/9 rate in 50 2/3 innings of work. The Tigers did trade for former Nationals closer Kyle Finnegan at the trade deadline, who pitched the eighth inning in Monday's game and earned the win. Finnegan has seen the team's most save opportunities in the last 15 days, but Vest should remain a useful fantasy option in deeper roto leagues.

Will Vest Struggles in Non-Save Situation

Detroit Tigers closer Will Vest had a rough outing in a non-save situation during a 7-5 win over the Philadelphia Phillies on Saturday. Vest came in to pitch the bottom of the eighth inning with a 7-3 lead and yielded three hits, including a Bryce Harper two-run homer, to turn the game into a nail-biter. He ended up retiring two batters (both via strikeout) before the Tigers replaced him with the just-acquired Kyle Finnegan. Fortunately for Detroit, Finnegan notched a four-out save to secure the victory. Vest, meanwhile, has been shaky in three of his past four outings. He blew a save Friday and is 16 out of 21 on the year with a 2.85 ERA, a 1.12 WHIP, and 54:15 K:BB.

Will Vest Takes Loss on Saturday

Detroit Tigers closer Will Vest (5-2) took his second loss of the season in a 6-1 game against the Toronto Blue Jays on Saturday. Vest, who hadn't pitched since last Sunday, entered a scoreless game in the eighth inning and wound up delivering his worst performance in over a month. The 30-year-old right-hander yielded two earned runs on three hits with one strikeout to hand the Tigers their 12th loss in 13 games. Detroit's recent slide has led to fewer opportunities for Vest, who has picked up just two saves in three weeks. Even after struggling Saturday, Vest still owns a 2.58 ERA with a 1.04 WHIP, 51:15 K:BB, and 16 saves over 45 1/3 innings.

Will Vest Spotless in Second-Half Debut

Detroit Tigers reliever Will Vest mowed down the Texas Rangers for his 16th save in a 2-1 win on Sunday. Making his first appearance in a week, the right-hander entered with the bases empty and two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning. Vest fanned Wyatt Langford to end the frame and then pitched a 1-2-3 ninth with another strikeout to take down Texas. He needed just nine pitches to record four outs. The 30-year-old lowered his ERA to 2.23 with a 0.99 WHIP and 50:15 K:BB in 44 1/3 innings. With fellow Tigers reliever Tommy Kahnle in the throes of a July meltdown (14 earned runs allowed in 3 1/3 innings), Vest has a firm hold on the closer's job.

Will Vest Records Four-Out Save

Detroit Tigers reliever Will Vest retired four Cleveland Guardians on Friday to close out a 2-1 win and collect his 14th save. The Tigers called on Vest with two outs and runners on first and third in the bottom of the eighth inning. Vest walked David Fry to load the bases, but he induced a Daniel Schneeman groundout to wiggle out of a bases-loaded jam. The right-hander faced more trouble in the ninth when he allowed a two-out double to Steven Kwan, but Kyle Manzardo then grounded out to Vest to end the game. Vest fanned one during the outing and dropped his ERA to 2.25 with a 0.95 WHIP, 44:11 K:BB, and three blown saves over 40 frames.

Will Vest Secures 13th Save

Detroit Tigers reliever Will Vest pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning Sunday to finish off a 3-0 win over the Minnesota Twins. Vest struck out one and needed only eight pitches on the way to his 13th save in 16 chances. The 30-year-old right-hander now owns a 2.37 ERA with 42:10 K:BB and a 0.95 WHIP over 38 frames. Vest is Detroit's preferred option to close games, while Tommy Kahnle is next in line. The Tigers used Kahnle in the eighth on Sunday, and he threw a scoreless inning to tally his 11th hold. Kahnle has eight saves, the latest of which came on June 4.

Will Vest Likely to Avoid Injured List

According to manager A.J. Hinch, Detroit Tigers relief pitcher Will Vest (finger) will likely avoid a trip to the injured list. "I'm expecting to have him available in some capacity and not go on the injured list," Hinch noted. "Things can always change if we get more information. But so far, so good." The 30-year-old had been lights out this season, but recently exited an appearance early after he "had this feeling in his pinky." It's excellent news that the initial round of testing came back negative. However, it's still a bit of a mystery ailment, considering there doesn't seem to be a precise mechanism of injury. For now, Vest can be regarded as more on the day-to-day side of things, but he's still worth keeping a close eye on. Despite his recent blow-up performance, he still carries an exceptional 2.57 ERA, 0.97 WHIP, and 37:9 K:BB ratio through 35 innings. UPDATE: Vest has passed all tests and is good to go.

Will Vest Dealing With Finger Injury

Detroit Tigers reliever Will Vest (finger) exited early in an 8-4 loss to the Cincinnati Reds on Sunday with a finger injury. Afterward, manager A.J. Hinch told Evan Woodbery of MLive.com that "(Vest) had this feeling in his pinky. It was bothering him, so we took him out. We'll get him evaluated, and he'll run through the whole battery of tests. I have no idea what it is." Vest suffered his first loss and his third blown save of the season after allowing three unearned runs on three hits in two-thirds of an inning. The right-hander left after uncorking a wild pitch. Overall, the 30-year-old has done great work this season with a 1.80 ERA, 37:9 K:BB, and 12 saves over 35 frames. If Vest requires a stint on the 15-day injured list, it should lead to more save opportunities for righty Tommy Kahnle.
