Colt Keith Looks Like a Steady Source of Batting Average Early in 2026

Detroit Tigers infielder Colt Keith has established himself as a key piece of his team's lineup early in 2026, hitting .317/.348/.429 with zero home runs, five RBI, and 10 runs scored across his first 66 plate appearances. Keith hasn't hit for much power in the early going, but his excellent 58.3% hard-hit rate supports his strong batting average. While Keith is looking like a potential breakout candidate early on this season, it's worth noting that he's logged just two plate appearances against left-handed pitching so far this year. Still, even in a platoon role, Keith profiles as a potentially valuable source of batting average for fantasy managers. In leagues where he's not already rostered, Keith could be worth targeting on the waiver wire.

Colt Keith Gets Rare Day Off on Tuesday

Detroit Tigers infielder Colt Keith (rest) is out of the starting lineup ahead of Tuesday's game against the Kansas City Royals. Fantasy managers don't need to panic as this appears to be a rare rest day for Keith. The Tigers will opt to go with Javier Baez at shortstop and Kevin McGonigle at the hot corner with tough lefty Cole Ragans on the mound for Kansas City. The expectation is that Keith will be back in the lineup on Wednesday. Keith has been great with the bat, slashing .340/.375/.472 through 15 games this season.

Colt Keith Emerging as a Viable Source of Batting Average

Across his first 47 plate appearances of 2026, Detroit Tigers infielder Colt Keith is hitting .364/.404/.500 with zero home runs, three RBI, and eight runs scored. While Keith has yet to homer, six of his 16 hits have gone for extra bases, and he's posted a ridiculous 61.8% hard-hit rate. Keith's batting average has been inflated by his unsustainable .471 batting average on balls in play. His current strikeout rate of 21.3% is right in line with the 21.8% mark he posted in 2025 while hitting .256. Still, if Keith can continue to consistently make hard contact, he could emerge as a viable source of batting average for fantasy managers. The 24-year-old has also earned a spot in the top third of the Tigers' order against right-handed pitching, which should help him rack up counting stats. In leagues where he is not currently rostered, Keith is a name to target on the waiver wire.

Colt Keith Back in Lineup, Hitting Leadoff Again on Saturday

Detroit Tigers infielder Colt Keith is back in the starting lineup on Saturday, starting at third base and batting leadoff against the St. Louis Cardinals and right-hander Dustin May, according to MLB.com. Keith was given a rest day on Friday against St. Louis, but he'll be back in the leadoff spot for Detroit for the third time in the last four games. The 24-year-old former fifth-round pick in 2020 has been setting the table nicely for the Tigers early on in 2026, going 8-for-22 (.364) with four doubles, two RBI, four runs scored, two walks, and six strikeouts. With Keith back in the lineup, rookie infielder Kevin McGonigle will slide from leadoff to the two-hole on Saturday. Keith's fantasy stock is up after the strong start, especially with outfielder Kerry Carpenter off to a slow start at the plate, making it unlikely that Carpenter takes the leadoff spot from Keith anytime soon. Keith has reached base safely in all six of his games so far this year.

Colt Keith to Focus on Third Base, First Base This Spring

Detroit Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said that infielder Colt Keith will focus on third base and first base in spring training, according to Chris McCosky of the Detroit News. Keith will only return to second base if there are injury issues this year. The 24-year-old former fifth-round pick in 2020 spent most of his time at the keystone in his rookie season in 2024, but he played 24 games at second, 33 at third base, and 52 as the designated hitter for Detroit in 2025. Despite moving around the diamond last year, Keith was productive at the plate, slashing .256/.333/.413 with a .746 OPS, 13 home runs, 45 RBI, and 65 runs scored in 414 at-bats over 137 games played. The former top prospect must improve against left-handed pitchers (he had reverse splits), but with regular playing time and multi-position eligibility, he's a decent corner infield target in the later rounds of drafts.

Colt Keith Could Serve as Tigers' Primary Third Baseman?

Detroit Tigers infielder Colt Keith could be primed to "lock down a large share of playing time at third base," per Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic. The 24-year-old has spent time at every infield position other than shortstop so far in his big league career, but saw more appearances as a designated hitter than anywhere else in 2025. Stavenhagen notes that Detroit has a multitude of options at the hot corner, namely, veterans Javier Baez, Zach McKinstry, and Matt Vierling, as well as prospects Kevin McGonigle and Max Anderson. As such, Keith is not guaranteed to hold the job throughout the season, but he may enter Spring Training as the favorite to start at third base on Opening Day. Across 468 plate appearances for Detroit in 2025, Keith posted a .256/.333/.413 slash line with 13 home runs, 45 RBI, 65 runs scored, and one stolen base. He's been significantly better against right-handed pitching (.731 OPS) than left-handed pitching (.610 OPS) so far in his career.

Colt Keith Returning for Game 1

Detroit Tigers infielder Colt Keith (ribs) is in the starting lineup ahead of Saturday's Game 1 of the ALDS versus the Seattle Mariners. Keith has been sidelined since the middle of September due to right ribcage inflammation. He ended up being forced to miss the Wild-Card round due to this issue. Keith is back and will bat fifth and serve as the designated hitter for Saturday's Game 1 contest. He won't draw an easy matchup against George Kirby, but Keith does have good career numbers against the right-hander. The Tigers are certainly happy to have the left-handed slugger available for this series.

Colt Keith Lands on Injured List With Rib-Cage Inflammation

The Detroit Tigers announced on Friday that they placed infielder Colt Keith (rib cage) on the 10-day injured list with right rib-cage inflammation and recalled infielder Jace Jung from Triple-A Toledo in a corresponding move. The Tigers initially announced that Keith left Thursday's game against the Cleveland Guardians with a back injury. The 24-year-old does not have any structural damage, but he's going to miss the rest of the regular season. They will be hoping that he can rejoin the team for the playoffs, and it will help if Detroit is able to secure a first-round bye. Keith has been a lineup regular for the first-place Tigers this year and will end his 2025 season by hitting .256 (106-for-414) with 13 home runs, 45 RBI, and 65 runs in 137 games. Zach McKinstry will be the team's primary option at third with Keith out.

Colt Keith Absent on Friday

Detroit Tigers infielder Colt Keith (back) is not in the team's starting lineup on Friday against the visiting Atlanta Braves at Comerica Park. Keith was pulled from Thursday's contest early with a back injury and went for testing. Results of his MRI exam aren't back yet, so the 24-year-old is day-to-day. However, this is worth watching, as his back injury could keep him out for the rest of September and potentially into the playoffs. With Keith out on Friday, Zach McKinstry is starting at third base and is hitting eighth against Braves right-hander Bryce Elder. Javier Baez is at short and is in the seven-hole. If Keith misses more time, both McKinstry and Baez should play regularly on the left side of Detroit's infield. In his second MLB season in 2025, Keith has hit .256 (106-for-414) with 13 home runs, 45 RBI, and 65 runs scored in 137 games.

Colt Keith Leaves Game With Apparent Back Injury

Detroit Tigers infielder Colt Keith (back) left Thursday's game early against the Cleveland Guardians and appeared to be grabbing his lower-back area, according to Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press. Keith immediately alerted manager A.J. Hinch before going down the tunnel with assistant athletic trainer Kelly Rhoades. The 24-year-old had an RBI double in his only plate appearance before being pulled from the game. Zach McKinstry moved from shortstop to third base, while Trey Sweeney entered the game to play shortstop. It's unclear what the severity of Keith's injury is, but the Tigers will likely play it safe with him in hopes that he'll be available for the start of the playoffs in October. Keith has been a lineup regular this year for the first-place Tigers and entered Thursday's game hitting .254 (105-for-413) with 13 home runs, 44 RBI, and 65 runs scored in 136 games played. UPDATE: Keith is being sent for imaging on his back.
