Colt Keith to Focus on Third Base, First Base This Spring

Detroit Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said that infielder Colt Keith will focus on third base and first base in spring training, according to Chris McCosky of the Detroit News. Keith will only return to second base if there are injury issues this year. The 24-year-old former fifth-round pick in 2020 spent most of his time at the keystone in his rookie season in 2024, but he played 24 games at second, 33 at third base, and 52 as the designated hitter for Detroit in 2025. Despite moving around the diamond last year, Keith was productive at the plate, slashing .256/.333/.413 with a .746 OPS, 13 home runs, 45 RBI, and 65 runs scored in 414 at-bats over 137 games played. The former top prospect must improve against left-handed pitchers (he had reverse splits), but with regular playing time and multi-position eligibility, he's a decent corner infield target in the later rounds of drafts.

Colt Keith Could Serve as Tigers' Primary Third Baseman?

Detroit Tigers infielder Colt Keith could be primed to "lock down a large share of playing time at third base," per Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic. The 24-year-old has spent time at every infield position other than shortstop so far in his big league career, but saw more appearances as a designated hitter than anywhere else in 2025. Stavenhagen notes that Detroit has a multitude of options at the hot corner, namely, veterans Javier Baez, Zach McKinstry, and Matt Vierling, as well as prospects Kevin McGonigle and Max Anderson. As such, Keith is not guaranteed to hold the job throughout the season, but he may enter Spring Training as the favorite to start at third base on Opening Day. Across 468 plate appearances for Detroit in 2025, Keith posted a .256/.333/.413 slash line with 13 home runs, 45 RBI, 65 runs scored, and one stolen base. He's been significantly better against right-handed pitching (.731 OPS) than left-handed pitching (.610 OPS) so far in his career.

Colt Keith Returning for Game 1

Detroit Tigers infielder Colt Keith (ribs) is in the starting lineup ahead of Saturday's Game 1 of the ALDS versus the Seattle Mariners. Keith has been sidelined since the middle of September due to right ribcage inflammation. He ended up being forced to miss the Wild-Card round due to this issue. Keith is back and will bat fifth and serve as the designated hitter for Saturday's Game 1 contest. He won't draw an easy matchup against George Kirby, but Keith does have good career numbers against the right-hander. The Tigers are certainly happy to have the left-handed slugger available for this series.

Colt Keith Lands on Injured List With Rib-Cage Inflammation

The Detroit Tigers announced on Friday that they placed infielder Colt Keith (rib cage) on the 10-day injured list with right rib-cage inflammation and recalled infielder Jace Jung from Triple-A Toledo in a corresponding move. The Tigers initially announced that Keith left Thursday's game against the Cleveland Guardians with a back injury. The 24-year-old does not have any structural damage, but he's going to miss the rest of the regular season. They will be hoping that he can rejoin the team for the playoffs, and it will help if Detroit is able to secure a first-round bye. Keith has been a lineup regular for the first-place Tigers this year and will end his 2025 season by hitting .256 (106-for-414) with 13 home runs, 45 RBI, and 65 runs in 137 games. Zach McKinstry will be the team's primary option at third with Keith out.

Colt Keith Absent on Friday

Detroit Tigers infielder Colt Keith (back) is not in the team's starting lineup on Friday against the visiting Atlanta Braves at Comerica Park. Keith was pulled from Thursday's contest early with a back injury and went for testing. Results of his MRI exam aren't back yet, so the 24-year-old is day-to-day. However, this is worth watching, as his back injury could keep him out for the rest of September and potentially into the playoffs. With Keith out on Friday, Zach McKinstry is starting at third base and is hitting eighth against Braves right-hander Bryce Elder. Javier Baez is at short and is in the seven-hole. If Keith misses more time, both McKinstry and Baez should play regularly on the left side of Detroit's infield. In his second MLB season in 2025, Keith has hit .256 (106-for-414) with 13 home runs, 45 RBI, and 65 runs scored in 137 games.

Colt Keith Leaves Game With Apparent Back Injury

Detroit Tigers infielder Colt Keith (back) left Thursday's game early against the Cleveland Guardians and appeared to be grabbing his lower-back area, according to Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press. Keith immediately alerted manager A.J. Hinch before going down the tunnel with assistant athletic trainer Kelly Rhoades. The 24-year-old had an RBI double in his only plate appearance before being pulled from the game. Zach McKinstry moved from shortstop to third base, while Trey Sweeney entered the game to play shortstop. It's unclear what the severity of Keith's injury is, but the Tigers will likely play it safe with him in hopes that he'll be available for the start of the playoffs in October. Keith has been a lineup regular this year for the first-place Tigers and entered Thursday's game hitting .254 (105-for-413) with 13 home runs, 44 RBI, and 65 runs scored in 136 games played. UPDATE: Keith is being sent for imaging on his back.

Colt Keith Returns as DH on Monday

Detroit Tigers infielder Colt Keith (illness) is serving as the designated hitter and is batting leadoff for the team's Monday series opener in Sacramento against the Athletics and right-hander J.T. Ginn. Keith will return to the starting nine to begin the week after he was scratched from Sunday's lineup with an illness. He will not return to the field, but he'll be back in the batting order at Sutter Health Park. The 24-year-old has gone hitless in his last eight at-bats over his last four games at the plate, so he'll be looking to get back on track now that he's feeling better. Keith has one hit in just three career at-bats against Ginn and is slashing .261/.343/.425 on the season with 11 home runs, 39 RBI and 56 runs scored in 348 at-bats for Detroit. In 18 games in August, he's hitting a cool .304 (17-for-56) with three homers, four doubles, seven RBI and even his first stolen base of the year.

Colt Keith Scratched With Illness on Sunday

Detroit Tigers infielder Colt Keith (illness) has been scratched from Sunday's lineup with an illness, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports. Zach McKinstry will take over at third base and hit sixth against Kansas City Royals right-hander Seth Lugo, while outfielder Wenceel Perez will lead off in place of Keith. The 24-year-old Keith has enjoyed a highly productive August, having slashed .304/.375/.536 with three homers, seven RBI, and 11 runs scored in 18 games. Overall, Keith has hit .261/.343/.425 with 11 HRs, 39 RBI, and 56 runs across 397 trips to the plate.

Colt Keith Could See More Time at Third Base

The Athletic's Cody Stavenhagen suggests that Detroit Tigers infielder Colt Keith, who has played back-to-back games at third base and seven appearances overall at the hot corner this year, could stick at third base more permanently moving forward. Keith played third in the minors before a shoulder injury hurt his throwing arm, and it's been a way to keep his bat in the lineup with Gleyber Torres at second and Spencer Torkelson at first. With Keith and Matt Vierling now options at third, the Tigers may be less inclined to acquire another infielder at the trade deadline this summer. The 23-year-old left-handed hitter should continue to start at third against right-handers, which means he should regain third-base eligibility for fantasy managers. Keith is currently slashing .247/.331/.402 with six homers, 25 RBI and 35 runs scored in 219 at-bats in his second year in the big leagues.

Colt Keith Heading to the Bench

Detroit Tigers first baseman Colt Keith is out of the starting lineup ahead of Thursday's game against the Baltimore Orioles. It's not shocking to see Keith out against a southpaw considering his struggles against them this season. However, Keegan Akin is starting and is likely only going to pitch an inning or two. Afterwards, right-hander Dean Kremer is expected to take over as the bulk pitcher. That means, Keith could possibly come into the game as a pinch-hitter, but it's probably safer for fantasy managers just to bench him here. Keith is more of a deep league option with four home runs, 19 RBI and a .241/.332/.385 slash line on the season. Spencer Torkelson will cover first base and bat cleanup on Thursday.
