Rockies Place Tyler Kinley On 15-Day Injured List

The Colorado Rockies announced on Friday that they placed right-hander Tyler Kinley (elbow) on the 15-day injured list with right-elbow inflammation and recalled right-hander Jake Bird from Triple-A Albuquerque in a corresponding move. Kinley took over closing duties in Colorado when Victor Vodnik landed on the IL and he'll now end his 2024 season with a career-high 12 saves, a 6.19 ERA (4.80 FIP), a 1.47 WHIP and a 72:33 K:BB in 64 innings out of the bullpen. The 33-year-old veteran also picked up 33 holds in his fifth year with Colorado. Now that Kinley will not pitch again out of the big-league bullpen, Vodnik should take over the primary closing duties for the Rockies to close out the season with just over a week left. Vodnik has a career-high nine saves this year, with one of them coming since he returned from the IL on Sept. 10.

Tyler Kinley Secures Third Save

Colorado Rockies relief pitcher Tyler Kinley recorded a one-out save on Thursday to secures the club's 22nd victory versus the St. Louis Cardinals on Thursday. Kinley reliever Jalen Beeks, who had recorded the first two outs of the inning via strikeout and pop-up. Kinley allowed a single to Paul Goldschmidt, but was able to get Nolan Gorman to strikeout to end the inning for his third save of the season. The Rockies bullpen has been a mess this season and with limited wins, weather it is Justin Lawrence, Beeks, Kinley or another option, it is recommended to avoid the situation completely.

Tyler Kinley Works Perfect Ninth Inning

Colorado Rockies relief pitcher Tyler Kinley was tasked with holding a three-run lead versus the Philadelphia Phillies on Sunday. The right-hander threw a scoreless final frame to earn his second save of the season. He needed only nine pitches to retire the red-hot Phillies lineup. Kinley holds an ugly 7.59 ERA this season but he has looked much better in May. It's worth noting that Jalen Beeks and Justin Lawrence both pitched on Saturday. That being said, both pitchers were probably unavailable which is why Kinley got the save chance. He might be working his way into more save chances, but this situation is a mess right now.

Tyler Kinley, Justin Lawrence To Compete For Closer Role

Colorado Rockies pitchers Tyler Kinley and Justin Lawrence are set to battle for the team's closer role in spring training. "We'll talk and as this spring progresses, those conversations will tighten up about role expectations," manager Bud Black said. Kinley saved five games down the stretch in September last year after returning from Tommy John surgery, while Lawrence had a career-high 11 saves in 2023. The Rockies probably aren't going to have a ton of save opportunities, so whoever is officially named the primary ninth-inning arm won't be all that attractive to fantasy managers and will almost certainly be on a short leash. The 29-year-old Lawrence should probably be considered the favorite for the role in Colorado for now.

Tyler Kinley Placed On Injured List

The Colorado Rockies placed reliever Tyler Kinley (elbow) on the 15-day injured list on Sunday with right elbow soreness and recalled right-hander Chad Smith from Triple-A Albuquerque in a corresponding move. Kinley has been one of the team's primary setup men this year, and he had a microscopic 0.75 ERA in 25 relief appearances. Along with Kinley, righty Alex Colome hadn't given up a run in 15 outings over 14 2/3 innings, while closer Daniel Bard entered Sunday's game with a 2.22 ERA and 12 saves. Smith had a 1.80 ERA in 18 appearances for Albuquerque, so the Rockies will be hoping he can step in for Kinley and be productive out of the bullpen.

Twins Pick Tyler Kinley In Rule 5 Draft

The Minnesota Twins have selected relief pitcher Tyler Kinley from the Miami Marlins with the 13th pick in the Rule 5 Draft. Kinley reached Double-A and Triple-A in 2016 but his stock fell and he spent last year in between Single-A and Double-A. Kinley, 26, posted a 3.54 ERA between the two stops this past season and recorded 72 strikeouts in 53 1/3 innings. The Twins are looking to compete and he will probably be a long shot to make the opening day roster unless he really impresses in spring training. Should he not make the roster, he would be returned to the Marlins.
