Justin Verlander Ends Season on High Note

San Francisco Giants right-hander Justin Verlander pulled a George Costanza and went out on a high note in a 4-3 win over the Colorado Rockies on Saturday. Making his last start of the season, the 42-year-old future Hall of Famer fired six innings of two-run, five-hit ball with seven strikeouts against one walk to notch the 266th win of his career. Verlander went a dismal 4-11 in 29 starts this season, but his numbers suggest he deserved far better than that. Across 152 innings, he posted a 3.85 ERA with a 1.36 WHIP, 137 strikeouts, and 52 walks. The three-time Cy Young winner saved his best month for last, logging a sparkling 2.09 ERA over five starts and 30 1/3 innings in September. Verlander, who said earlier this month that he plans to pitch in 2026, should draw plenty of interest in free agency during the offseason.

Justin Verlander Plans to Pitch in 2026

San Francisco Giants right-hander Justin Verlander plans to pitch in 2026, Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports. Although Verlander will turn 43 in February, the future Hall of Famer and three-time Cy Young winner remains an effective starter. He turned in seven scoreless innings of three-hit ball with three strikeouts and two walks in a win over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Wednesday, continuing a spectacular start to September. Verlander has taken the ball three times this month and allowed a mere one earned run on 10 hits and six walks (13 strikeouts) over 20 innings. Despite an unsightly 3-10 record, Verlander has registered a respectable 3.75 ERA with a 1.34 WHIP, 127 strikeouts, and 49 walks in 141 2/3 frames this season. The nine-time All-Star has pitched for four different teams since he began his decorated career in 2005, and as a soon-to-be free agent, he could add to that total over the winter. In the meantime, Verlander is scheduled to make his next start against the St. Louis Cardinals on Monday.

Justin Verlander Looks Excellent on Saturday

San Francisco Giants starting pitcher Justin Verlander posted arguably his best outing of the season versus the Tampa Bay Rays on Saturday. The right-hander looked like prime Verlander during this start. He threw seven shutout innings, allowing two hits, while striking out eight batters in the no-decision. Verlander has looked better on the mound lately with one earned run or less in four of his last five starts. Overall, Verlander holds a 4.23 ERA, 1.42 WHIP, and a 95/36 K/BB ratio across 21 starts this season. His late season turnaround has given Verlander some more streaming appeal lately. However, he's not a great streaming option against a tough San Diego Padres squad next time out.

Justin Verlander Available for Trade

The San Francisco Giants have made right-hander Justin Verlander available ahead of Thursday's trade deadline, according to Jon Morosi of MLB.com. Verlander has a full no-trade clause, giving him the right to block a deal anywhere. The Giants signed the 42-year-old to a $15 million contract in the offseason, but this season has been a struggle for Verlander. The three-time Cy Young winner has made 18 starts and gone 1-8 with a 4.53 ERA, a 1.49 WHIP, and 77:34 K:BB across 89 1/3 innings. While Verlander could still be of interest to teams looking for back-end rotation help, it's likely the Giants would have to eat at least some of his remaining salary for a trade to come to fruition.

Justin Verlander Enters All-Star Break With Zero Wins

San Francisco Giants right-hander Justin Verlander enters this week's All-Star break with an 0-7 record, 4.70 ERA (4.16 FIP) and a 1.42 WHIP with 67 strikeouts and 26 walks in 76 2/3 innings over his 15 starts in his first year with the team. The 42-year-old future Hall of Famer and three-time Cy Young winner is the first starting pitcher to enter the All-Star break with at least 65 strikeouts and no wins. He is stuck on 262 career wins and is now looking very unlikely to reach the 300-win milestone. Although Verlander hasn't been terrible by any means and he could have a much better second half, it's clear that he's no longer the fantasy ace that he once was. Verlander currently is in the 35th percentile in strikeout rate, 58th percentile in whiff rate and 60th percentile in hard-hit rate. His xERA of 4.82 goes to show that he's become much too hittable.

Justin Verlander on the Verge of a Breakthrough?

San Francisco Giants right-hander Justin Verlander is winless in his first 13 starts this year, which is the longest streak by a Giants pitcher since at least 1901. It increases the odds that Verlander won't reach the 300-win milestone for his career since he's 42 years old and needs 38 wins to get there. The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal points out that Verlander hasn't been terrible, though, as his park- and league-adjusted ERA is only 9% below league average, and he also missed time with a strained right pectoral muscle. "I feel like I kind of found something mechanically," Verlander said. It remains to be seen if he's right, as his average fastball velocity of 93.9 mph is below league average, and his strikeout rate is in the 26th percentile. His xERA of 5.09 is higher than his actual 4.26 ERA. Fantasy managers are probably less convinced than Verlander is that he can turn things around in 2025.

Justin Verlander Back From Paternity List

The San Francisco Giants reinstated right-hander Justin Verlander from the paternity list on Monday, according to San Francisco Chronicle's Shayna Rubin. Verlander was away from the team over the weekend with the team facing the Boston Red Sox, but he didn't miss a turn through the starting rotation. His next outing will come on Tuesday in an excellent fantasy matchup against the Miami Marlins. Verlander missed a month of action with a pectoral injury and returned to face the Cleveland Guardians last week to allow four runs (three earned) on seven hits (one homer) while walking one and striking out six in 4 2/3 innings for his fourth loss of the season. The future Hall of Famer has yet to win a game in his first year in San Fran and is sporting a 4.45 ERA, 1.43 WHIP and 47:22 K:BB in 56 2/3 innings over 11 starts. There's a good chance he'll pick up his first win of the year against the Fish.

Justin Verlander Placed on Paternity List

San Francisco Giants starting pitcher Justin Verlander was placed on the paternity list on Friday. The 42-year-old is still expected to make his next start, which will be on Tuesday at home against Miami. The 3x Cy Young award winner already missed a month earlier this season with a pectoral injury, making 11 starts thus far, going 0-4 with a 4.45 ERA (4.70 FIP), 1.43 WHIP, and a 10.1 percent K-BB% across 56 2/3 IP. While a matchup with the Marlins sounds easy, the team is just outside the top 10 in terms of fewest strikeouts per game and team batting average, so this could be a tough test for the aging hurler. Infielder Brett Wisely was recalled from Triple-A to take Verlander's place while on leave.

Justin Verlander Dealt Loss in Return to Rotation

San Francisco Giants starting pitcher Justin Verlander allowed four runs (three earned) on seven hits over 4 2/3 innings in Wednesday's 4-2 loss to the Cleveland Guardians. The veteran walked one and struck out six, falling to 0-4 in his return from a pectoral injury. Verlander gave up a run in the first frame on two consecutive one-out hits, but would quickly end the inning thereafter, limiting the damage. However, Cleveland got to him again in the fourth when a fielding error and a Lane Thomas single preceded a Daniel Schneemann three-run blast that'd prove all the Guardians needed to suss out a win on the day. It wasn't the 42-year-old's best, but it could have gone far worse. He'll look for better results when he next toes the slab, which projects to come next week against the Miami Marlins at home.

Justin Verlander Returning to the Rotation on Wednesday

The San Francisco Giants are saying that right-hander Justin Verlander (pectoral) will come off the 15-day injured list to start on Wednesday against the Cleveland Guardians. Despite the fact that Verlander hasn't pitched in a major-league game since May 18, he is skipping a minor-league rehab assignment after throwing a 65-pitch simulated game last Wednesday and a bullpen session over the weekend. The 42-year-old future Hall of Famer will an even riskier fantasy streaming option in his first start back and will probably be capped around 80 to 90 pitches on Wednesday against the Guardians, a team ranked 24th in the league with a .678 OPS. Verlander is no longer the dominant ace he was in his prime, but he can still be useful as a streamer in deeper leagues in the right matchups. He's returning to a 4.33 ERA, 1.40 WHIP and 41 K's in 52 innings over his 10 starts.
