Justin Verlander News
New York Mets pitcher Justin Verlander has been placed on the injured list with what is being described as a low-grade teres major strain. The issue won't shut him down from throwing at moderate intensity but he will not be rescanned for a week. Signed to a mammoth two-year deal this winter, the 40-year-old posted a 3.00 ERA in five spring outings, striking out 22 with 10 walks across 21 innings of work. The right-hander took home his third career AL Cy Young Award in 2022 and his second in three seasons. Verlander worked to a 1.75 ERA and a 23.4% K-BB% across 28 starts in 2022, going 18-4 in his return from Tommy John surgery.
New York Mets starting pitcher Justin Verlander made his spring debut with his new team on Saturday. The 40-year-old put together a strong showing, including three innings of work with only one-run allowed. It appears the veteran pitcher has not lost a step at all. He is coming off a fantastic season where he posted a league-leading 1.75 ERA in 28 starts with the Houston Astros. It seems impossible for Verlander to continue pitching at this excellent rate, but it doesn't appear to be showing signs of slowing down.
New York Mets right-hander Justin Verlander will make his debut with the Mets in the Grapefruit League on Saturday against the Miami Marlins. Verlander comes to New York in 2023 to help make up for Jacob deGrom leaving for the Texas Rangers in free agency. He and Max Scherzer will team up at the top of New York's starting rotation to give the team once again one of the best one-two punches in baseball. Despite being 40 years of age, Verlander was his usual dominant self for the Houston Astros in 2022, going 18-4 with a league-leading 1.75 ERA (2.49 FIP), league-leading 0.83 WHIP and 185 strikeouts in 175 innings over 28 starts to win the American League Cy Young for the third time in his illustrious career. There is injury risk, but Verlander remains a fantasy ace.

New York Mets starting pitcher Justin Verlander is coming off his third career Cy Young Award in his first season back from Tommy John surgery and becomes the co-owner of the highest annual contract value in the league as he's set to earn $43.3 million for each of the next two seasons. The former Houston Astro pitched just six innings in 2020 and missed all of the 2021 season due to the surgery but showed zero ill effects in his return, posting a 1.75 ERA/2.49 FIP along with a healthy 27.8% K-rate. Verlander has also cut down on his walks as he's aged, posting a BB% of 5% or better across the last four seasons. Despite pitching in a relatively weak AL West, Verlander's draft stock is unaffected by a switch to the NL East despite increased competition from the likes of the Phillies and Braves. He's posted a K-BB of at least 6.38 in each of his last four seasons, averaged 95.1 mph on his four-seam fastball, and should be in line for plenty of wins on a quality Mets club that tied for fifth in runs scored last season. Verlander is trending at a 51 ADP but has gone as early as 32nd, while we suggest targeting him closer to the latter than the former given his Steamer projections of 31 starts, 27.8 K%, 3.36 ERA, 3.30 FIP, and 13 wins for the 2023 campaign.
