Javier Baez Lands on Injured List With Ankle Sprain

The Detroit Tigers announced on Wednesday that they placed infielder Javier Baez (ankle) on the 10-day injured list with a right-ankle sprain and recalled infielder Jace Jung from Triple-A Toledo in a corresponding move. Jung is getting the start right away on Wednesday night against the Atlanta Braves and rookie right-hander JR Ritchie, serving as the designated hitter and batting ninth. Baez injured his ankle in Tuesday's game in Atlanta and had to be carted off the field. We don't have an official timeline for when the utility man can return from the IL, but fantasy managers in deeper leagues shouldn't expect him to be back when he's eligible to come off the IL. In addition to Jung, both Matt Vierling and Wenceel Perez could see some more at-bats for the Tigers with Baez sidelined. Baez, a three-time All-Star, had a bounce-back year in Motown last season, but it still amounted to only 12 home runs, 57 RBI, and five steals in 126 games. The free-swinging right-handed hitter has hit .256 (20-for-78) so far in 24 games in 2026 with two homers, six RBI, 10 runs, and a steal. He's only rostered in 6% of Yahoo leagues these days.

Javier Baez Carted Off on Tuesday With Apparent Lower-Leg Injury

Detroit Tigers utility man Javier Baez (lower leg) was carted off from his team's game against the Atlanta Braves on Tuesday night after an awkward slide into first base. While the extent of the injury is not yet known, Tigers beat writer Chris McCosky reports that Baez appeared to be unable to put any weight on his right leg/ankle. The 33-year-old was hitless in two at-bats before leaving the game against Atlanta. Across his first 86 plate appearances of 2026, Baez was hitting .256/.280/.397 with two home runs, six RBI, 10 runs scored, and a stolen base. With Tigers outfielder Parker Meadows (arm) currently on the 60-day injured list due to a broken radius bone, Baez has been seeing more time in center field in Detroit. If Baez is forced to miss time, top Tigers outfield prospect Max Clark could be the next man up in Detroit. UPDATE: Baez will undergo an MRI exam on his right ankle.

Javier Baez Suspended From WBC After Positive Marijuana Test

Detroit Tigers outfielder Javier Baez has been suspended from playing for Team Puerto Rico in the 2026 World Baseball Classic after testing positive for marijuana during the 2023 tournament, according to Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press. It will prevent Baez from playing in the WBC for the third time. The good news for the 33-year-old veteran and the Tigers is that he will not face a suspension for the 2026 regular season. The three-time All-Star hit a combined .221/.262/.347 with a .610 OPS, 32 home runs, 163 RBI, and 29 stolen bases in his first full three seasons in Motown before bouncing back in 2025 to the tune of a .257/.282/.398 slash line, .680 OPS, 12 homers, 57 RBI, 55 runs scored, and five steals in 126 regular-season games. It wasn't a fantastic showing by any means, but it was much-needed. Baez adds positional versatility now after basically becoming a super-utility man last year, but there is still plenty of downside and swing and miss to his game.

Javier Baez Remains Out Against Cleveland

Detroit Tigers infielder Javier Baez (neck) is out of the starting lineup again on Wednesday in another crucial game against the division-rival Cleveland Guardians at Progressive Field. Trey Sweeney will start at shortstop and will bat out of the nine-hole against Guardians right-hander Tanner Bibee. Baez was scratched from Tuesday's lineup with neck stiffness and will miss his second straight game. Consider the 32-year-old day-to-day for now. Sweeney will be a poor choice as a DFS sleeper out of the nine-hole on Wednesday. The former first-rounder is hitting just .195 (57-for-292) this year with six home runs, 32 RBI, 36 runs scored, and three stolen bases. He's also hitless in three career at-bats against Bibee. With Colt Keith (rib cage) on the injured list, the Tigers are thin on the left side of their infield as they look to snap out of their current funk.

Javier Baez Out on Saturday

Detroit Tigers infielder/outfielder Javier Baez (head) is absent from Saturday's lineup against Miami Marlins right-hander Janson Junk. Zach McKinstry will take over at short and bat ninth in place of Baez, who left the Tigers' 8-2 loss to the Marlins on Friday after fouling a ball off his forehead in the second inning. Baez isn't in concussion protocol, however, and is considered day-to-day. The 32-year-old has played in six games this month and gone an ice-cold 2-for-16 with a triple, an RBI, and four strikeouts. He's hitting .256/.284/.400 with 11 homers, 52 RBI, 53 runs, and five steals in 410 plate appearances this season.

Javier Baez Day-to-Day After Early Exit on Friday

Detroit Tigers infielder/outfielder Javier Baez (head) left an 8-2 loss to the Miami Marlins on Friday after fouling a ball off his forehead. Baez is not in concussion protocol, though, and is considered day-to-day, Chris McCosky of the Detroit News reports. The 32-year-old started at shortstop, but the Tigers had to replace him with Trey Sweeney during his first at-bat game of the game in the top of the second inning. After back-to-back awful seasons, Baez surprisingly bounced back en route to an All-Star nod in the first half this year. However, his production has tanked since the beginning of July, and he's now hitting a below-average .256/.284/.400 with 11 homers, 52 RBI, 53 runs, and five steals in 410 plate appearances.

Javier Baez to Rest on Saturday

Detroit Tigers outfielder Javier Baez is absent from the starting lineup ahead of Saturday's game against the Kansas City Royals. This appears to be a routine rest day for Baez who has sat out in three of the last five games. Baez went 1-for-9 in the two games that he did play in during that span. He got off to a hot start to begin the season, but has slowed down in the second half. In his absence, Riley Greene, Wenceel Perez, and Kerry Carpenter will cover the outfield on Saturday. At the moment, Baez is really only worth rostering in deep leagues.

Javier Baez Not in Lineup on Saturday

Detroit Tigers outfielder/shortstop Javier Baez is out of the lineup for a meeting with the Minnesota Twins on Saturday. Wenceel Perez will play center field and hit sixth against right-hander Zebby Matthews, and Trey Sweeney will handle shortstop and bat eighth. After recording an ugly .426 OPS in July, Baez has rebounded with an .830 mark over 13 games this month. It's been a resurgent season overall for Baez, who has bounced back from three straight awful years to hit a useful .271/.298/.429 with 11 homers, 49 RBI, 49 runs scored, and five stolen bases in 359 plate appearances.

Javier Baez Expected to See More Time in Center Field

MLB.com's Jason Beck writes that Detroit Tigers shortstop Javier Baez is expected to see some playing time in center field along with Wenceel Perez with outfielder Matt Vierling (oblique) on the 10-day injured list. The Tigers called up Trey Sweeney from Triple-A Toledo for more infield depth up the middle. Baez indeed got the start in center in Monday's series opener against the division-rival Chicago White Sox and hit ninth in the batting order, while Zach McKinstry got the start at the 6. The 32-year-old Baez will probably move back to shortstop once Parker Meadows (quadriceps) comes back from the injured list. Baez has had an unexpected resurgent season in 2025 for the Tigers, making the All-Star team for the third time in his career. He's been versatile on defense, too, and has already played center field 37 times this year.

Javier Baez Back in Action on Tuesday

Detroit Tigers infielder/outfielder Javier Baez (shoulder) is back at shortstop and will hit eighth for Tuesday's contest against the hosting Pittsburgh Pirates and right-hander Mitch Keller at PNC Park. Baez was pulled from Sunday's game after aggravating an existing left-shoulder injury in the series finale against the Texas Rangers. It wasn't considered a major injury, though, and the 32-year-old All-Star will return to the Tigers' lineup after sitting out Monday's series opener. Although he has been quiet at the plate recently, 2025 has been a pretty nice bounce-back season for the free-swinging shortstop, as he was an All-Star for the third time and is currently hitting .274/.308/.438 with 10 homers and 39 RBI in 81 games. Baez has hit just .180 in his last 15 games, but he's batting .357 with a solo homer in 14 career at-bats against Keller.
