Kyle Finnegan News
Washington Nationals relief pitcher Kyle Finnegan is expected to be the team's primary closer entering the 2023 campaign with both Sean Doolittle and Tanner Rainey not expected to be ready for Opening Day. Finnegan's 11 saves were second on the team to Rainey's 12 last year. The 31-year-old finished the season with a 3.51 ERA, 1.14 WHIP, 70 strikeouts and 22 walks in 66 2/3 innings over 66 relief appearances. "Back end of the bullpen, which you know is up for hot-hand-type situations," Finnegan said of his role this season. "I was told I'll get some chances back there, but we also have so many good guys that we can play matchups a little bit and bring guys in in different situations. So I think kind of building off last year, we've got a lot of guys that are feeling confident and having success. Having too many guys is always a good thing."
Washington Nationals relief pitcher Kyle Finnegan was called upon to protect a one-run lead against the Cincinnati Reds on Sunday. The right-hander needed only 10 pitches to record his eighth save in 12 attempts this season. At this point, Finnegan appears to be the primary closer for Washington. The 30-year-old isn't a great fantasy option, but is worth rostering in fantasy formats where saves matter.
Washington Nationals relief pitcher Kyle Finnegan threw a scoreless ninth inning against the San Diego Padres on Thursday night. The right-hander issued a pair of walks, which made for an interesting inning. However, he was able to get Jurickson Profar to ground into a double play to escape the jam. Finnegan has converted six of his 10 save chances this season. He should get more opportunities through the final few weeks of the regular season. There's not a ton of fantasy value here with the Nationals not getting many save chances. Honestly, Finnegan only has value to fantasy managers who are desperate for saves.

Washington Nationals relief pitcher Kyle Finnegan had an overall successful season serving in high-leverage situations, particularly after taking over closing duties in the second half of the season. The 31-year-old went 6-4 with 14 holds and 11 of 15 save opportunities converted with a 3.51 ERA, 1.14 WHIP, and 26.1% strikeout rate. Finnegan relied heavily on a 97-MPH sinker at 78.8% usage with a slider and split-finger fastball mixed in. He did get hit hard but kept the ball out of the air with an 8.3-degree launch angle. While the Nationals likely won't be the best source of save opportunities, Finnegan doesn't appear to have a ton of competition for the closer role, with Tanner Rainey (elbow) recovering from Tommy John surgery. Finnegan is currently being drafted at about pick 267 overall, putting him well behind other speculative bullpen picks. He is well worth a pick at that position in roto leagues given the prospect of him retaining the closer's role throughout the season.
