Reds Place Julian Aguiar On 60-Day Injured List

To make room on the 40-man roster for newly-acquired right-handed reliever Scott Barlow, the Cincinnati Reds placed right-hander Julian Aguiar (elbow) on the 60-day injured list on Thursday. The move to put Aguiar on the 60-day IL was only a matter of time after he had Tommy John surgery in October of last year. The 23-year-old reliever will miss the entire 2025 season as a result. The former 12th-round selection in the 2021 MLB draft out of Cypress College made his major-league debut with Cincinnati in 2024 and made seven starts, going 2-1 with a 6.25 ERA (6.86 FIP) and 1.33 WHIP with 19 strikeouts and 12 free passes issued in 31 2/3 innings pitched. Aguiar will continue to rehab in 2025 and hope to come to spring training in 2026 without any restrictions.

Julian Aguiar To Miss All Of Next Season After Having Tommy John Surgery

Cincinnati Reds right-handed pitching prospect Julian Aguiar (elbow) had Tommy John surgery and will miss the entire 2025 season. Aguiar, the team's No. 11 prospect per MLB Pipeline, also ended the 2024 season with a right-shoulder injury. The 23-year-old former 12th-round pick in 2021 out of Cypress College will now focus on rehab all of next year while hoping to be good to go for spring training in 2026. Aguiar made his major-league debut with the Reds in 2024 and made seven starts, struggling to the tune of a 6.25 ERA (6.86 FIP) and a 1.33 WHIP while striking out 19 and walking 12 in 31 2/3 innings pitched. He relies on a fastball-slider mix and occasionally mixes in a curveball and changeup. Aguiar didn't become a full-time pitcher until his junior year in college and was named the Reds' Minor-League Pitcher of the Year in 2023. He has the chance to be a back-end starter for the Reds in 2026.

Julian Aguiar Called Up To Make Big-League Debut

The Cincinnati Reds recalled right-handed pitching prospect Julian Aguiar from Triple-A Louisville on Monday to make his major-league debut and start against the Toronto Blue Jays at Rogers Centre. Aguiar, a former 12th-round pick and the team's No. 11 prospect per MLB Pipeline, gets the nod for his MLB debut after going a combined 5-4 with a 3.79 ERA, a 1.21 WHIP and a 95:29 K:BB in 116 1/3 innings over 22 starts with Double-A Chattanooga and Louisville this year. The 23-year-old has a big slider that he leans on heavily. Since making his professional debut in 2021, he has increased his velocity significantly and has developed a feel for pitching. As of now, Aguiar will take the rotation spot of the injured Hunter Greene (elbow). He gets a Toronto team that ranks 20th in MLB this year with a .695 OPS.
