Matthew Etzel to Marlins in Deadline Deal
The Miami Marlins acquired outfield prospect Matthew Etzel on Tuesday in exchange for catcher Nick Fortes. Etzel has spent the 2025 season at Double-A, where he has struggled since being traded from the Orioles to the Rays last year. His batting average has dropped from .261 with the Orioles to .231 with the Rays. Despite his struggles, Etzel brings above-average speed, with 17 stolen bases this season. However, with a 25.9% strikeout rate and limited power, Etzel projects as a fringe major leaguer when he does eventually get the call.
