Pete Fairbanks Won't Return This Season

Tampa Bay Rays relief pitcher Pete Fairbanks (lat) won't take the mound again this season, according to manager Kevin Cash. The right-hander has been sidelined since mid-August due to a lat strain. The Rays have been going with closer-by-committee while Fairbanks has been sidelined. Edwin Uceta appears to be the favorite for the final frame. He is putting together a breakout campaign with a 1.42 ERA and 53 strikeouts across 26 appearances this season. However, Uceta only has three saves to his name this season, so he's not a great fantasy asset in that aspect.

Pete Fairbanks Resumes Throwing On Saturday

Tampa Bay Rays relief pitcher Pete Fairbanks (lat) resumed throwing on Saturday. Manager Kevin Cash provided an update Friday saying the pitcher was "asymptomatic" from his strain, clearing the path for the 30-year-old to resume throwing. Fairbanks was initially expected to be shut down from throwing for 2-4 weeks so the step towards resuming throwing activities on Saturday puts him on the fast end of the recovery process. Right now there is no announced timetable for Fairbanks' return to the Rays though the expectation is that he will be able to rejoin the club in late September. For many fantasy managers this likely won't provide much value to their rosters. Fantasy managers in need of help for relief pitchers can look at Rays reliever Manuel Rodriguez, who has a 1.69 ERA and two saves in 10.2 innings pitched over the last 30 days.

Pete Fairbanks Officially Placed On Injured List

Tampa Bay Rays relief pitcher Pete Fairbanks (lat) has been placed on the 15-day injured list on Monday. As expected, Fairbanks will head to the shelf after suffering a right lat strain during Sunday's game. The expectation is that the Rays will go closer-by-committee while Fairbanks is out. The list is long for possible closing options in Tampa Bay. Edwin Uceta seems like the favorite choice, but Drew Rasmussen, Garrett Cleavinger, and Colin Poche are also possible options. There's no obvious fantasy pickup here, so fantasy managers might have to wait and see who the Rays lean on in the ninth inning.

Pete Fairbanks Expected To Land On Injured List

Tampa Bay Rays relief pitcher Pete Fairbanks (lat) is expected to miss time after suffering an injury during Sunday's game. Rays' manager Kevin Cash said Fairbanks is likely to be placed on the 15-day injured list following Sunday's contest. The right-hander appears to have suffered the injury during his rough outing where he allowed three runs on three hits during Sunday's win. If Fairbanks misses time, the Rays are expected to go with a closer-by-committee approach. Garrett Cleavinger or Colin Poche are likely the favorites for save chances out of everyone, but they aren't must-add fantasy options given the Rays will probably use multiple pitchers in the ninth inning.

Pete Fairbanks Records 20th Save

Tampa Bay Rays closer Pete Fairbanks locked down a 2-1 victory with a scoreless ninth for his 20th save of the season in Sunday's game against the Reds. Fairbanks gave up a hit and struck out one batter in his inning of work. The right-hander now has a 3.11 ERA with a 1.19 WHIP. The Rays traded away ace set-up man Jason Adam on Sunday, so Fairbanks appears to have the closer role all to himself the rest of the way. He should be counted on as a good source of saves for the remainder of the season.

Pete Fairbanks Goes 1-2-3 For 19th Save

Tampa Bay Rays closer Pete Fairbanks worked a clean ninth inning to record his 19th save of the season on Tuesday versus the division rival Toronto Blue Jays. Fairbanks got Davis Schneider and Daulton Varsho to groundout before Alejandro Kirk flew out to end the game. It was a positive outing for the closer, who has allowed a run in three of his last five appearances, despite picking up a save in all those contests. Fairbanks has spent some time on the injured list this season, but continues to be effective when healthy. For the season, Fairbanks owns a 3.28 ERA with 8.33 K/9. Managers should continue to have confidence with Fairbanks moving forward.

Pete Fairbanks Notches 17th Save In Win Over Cleveland

Tampa Bay Rays closer Pete Fairbanks secured his 17th save of the season in Sunday's 2-0 win over Cleveland. The right-hander gave up two hits before closing the door on the Rays' victories. He did not record a strikeout. Fairbanks has four saves this month with a 3.60 ERA and 1.40 WHIP. His season-long ERA sits at 3.21 with a 1.25 WHIP. Fairbanks has converted his last four save opportunities and will look for a strong second half of the season.

Pete Fairbanks Notches 15th Save Tuesday

Tampa Bay Rays closer Pete Fairbanks picked up his 15th save of the season in Tuesday's 5-3 win over the Yankees. Fairbanks came in to pitch the top of the ninth inning up by two. He got the first out on a ground-out, allowed a single, got the second out on a strikeout, allowed the runner to advance to second on defensive indifference, and ended the game on a line-out. The 30-year-old has missed some time this season due to injury but has looked solid when on the field, converting all but two save opportunities with a 3.13 ERA, a 9.09 K/9 rate, and a 3.69 BB/9 rate in 31 2/3 innings of work. He should continue to be a reliable fantasy option as long as he stays healthy.

Pete Fairbanks Earns Clean 12th Save Monday

Tampa Bay Rays closer Pete Fairbanks picked up his 12th save of the season in Monday's 4-3 win over the Mariners. Fairbanks came in to pitch the top of the ninth inning up by one and delivered a 1-2-3 appearance with two strikeouts. The 30-year-old has missed some time due to various injuries but has still been an effective fantasy option, converting all but two save opportunities with a 3.25 ERA, a 1.23 WHIP, and a 26.5% strikeout rate in 27 2/3 innings of work. Fairbanks still has time to get his ERA down and his strikeouts up, and he should still be a reliable fantasy option if his numbers stay closer to where they are now. The Rays aren't as strong of a team as they have been, but Fairbanks should see plenty of save opportunities as long as he stays healthy.

Pete Fairbanks Dealing With Thumb Contusion

Tampa Bay Rays closer Pete Fairbanks (thumb) exited Tuesday's contest after being hit with a comebacker on the hand in the ninth inning. The closer went for X-rays after the game; the good news is that they were negative. The Rays have officially tagged Fairbanks with a right thumb contusion, and he is considered day-to-day. When healthy, Fairbanks continues to be one of the more reliable closers in the sport. With Fairbanks unlikely to be called upon in the next couple of days, look for Jason Adam as the next man up for any ninth-inning or high-leverage work.
