Reed Garrett Undergoes UCL Reconstruction, to Miss All of 2026

The New York Mets announced that right-handed reliever Reed Garrett (elbow) underwent "UCL reconstruction" surgery on Wednesday, according to Jorge Castillo of ESPN. It will be Garrett's second surgery on his right elbow this year, as he also went under the knife to deal with a nerve issue in his arm. It's not the ideal situation for a pitcher, and the 32-year-old veteran will miss the entire 2026 season as a result. In his two full seasons with the Mets, Garrett has gone 11-11 with a 3.83 ERA (3.38 FIP), a 1.36 WHIP, seven saves, and a 147:56 K:BB in 112 2/3 innings over 111 appearances (one start). He has been in the high-leverage mix during his time with the Mets, but he has a long road back to being a trustworthy option at the back end of a bullpen.

Reed Garrett Recommended for Tommy John Surgery

New York Mets right-handed reliever Reed Garrett (elbow) has been recommended for Tommy John surgery, according to Tim Britton of The Athletic. Garrett already has another offseason surgery scheduled to move a nerve in his right arm. That would only shelve him for four months, but if he has to undergo Tommy John, he'll miss all of next season. While the Mets and the 32-year-old are still exploring other options - including a platelet-rich plasma injection - he's done for 2025 at the very least. Garrett landed on the 15-day injured list twice this season with elbow troubles, most recently on Sept. 15. He made 58 appearances this year and pitched to a 3.90 ERA with a 1.32 WHIP, 64:26 K:BB, 20 holds, and three saves over 55 1/3 innings.

Reed Garrett Starts Rehab Assignment on Thursday

The New York Mets sent right-hander Reed Garrett (elbow) on a rehab assignment to the Double-A Binghamton Rumble Ponies on Thursday. Garrett actually started the game, threw one shutout inning, and struck out two batters. The Mets placed Garrett on the 15-day injured list on August 25 due to elbow inflammation. Given that he was assigned for a rehab start just 15 days later, this development is encouraging for both the Mets and Garrett's fantasy managers, as elbow injuries can be particularly challenging for pitchers. With the Mets in the middle of a playoff run and their bullpen struggling a bit, it would not be surprising to see Garrett back up with the big league club sooner rather than later. Garrett owns a 3.61 ERA and 1.22 WHIP in 52 1/3 innings pitched.

Mets Place Reed Garrett on Injured List With Elbow Inflammation

The New York Mets announced on Monday that they placed right-handed reliever Reed Garrett (elbow) on the 15-day injured list (retroactive to Aug. 23) with right-ebow inflammation and selected left-hander Jose Castillo's contract from the minors in a corresponding move. Right-hander Frankie Montas (elbow) was also moved to the 60-day IL. Garrett's injury might help explain why he allowed eight runs in 4 2/3 relief innings over his last five outings out of the Mets' bullpen. The recent rough patch has moved the 32-year-old veteran's season ERA up to 3.61, while he also has a 1.22 WHIP, 62 strikeouts, 24 walks and three saves in 52 1/3 total innings pitched in his second year with the club. Castillo will step in as a new middle reliever for the Mets with Garrett out as they begin a crucial divisional series against the Philadelphia Phillies on Monday.

Reed Garrett to Open for Mets on Saturday

New York Mets reliever Reed Garrett will serve as the opener in their game against the Milwaukee Brewers on Saturday. Right-hander Frankie Montas is expected to work as the Mets' bulk reliever, Will Sammon of The Athletic reports. Garrett hasn't lasted more than two innings in any of his 48 appearances this year, but he has pitched to a sterling 2.51 ERA with a 1.16 WHIP and 54:22 K:BB over 46 2/3 frames. Montas, on the other hand, has fared poorly across seven appearances (all starts). The 32-year-old has a 6.68 ERA with a 1.54 WHIP, 29 strikeouts, and 10 walks in 33 2/3 innings. After allowing five or more earned runs in back-to-back starts, the Mets will try him out of the bullpen Saturday.

Reed Garrett To Make Another Rehab Appearance This Week

New York Mets right-hander Reed Garrett (elbow) allowed three earned runs in just one-third of an inning for Double-A Binghamton on Sunday, but manager Carlos Mendoza said he came through the outing feeling physically strong. Garrett returned to New York on Monday to check in with the team's medical staff and will be sent back out for another minor-league rehab outing at an affiliate to be determined later this week. The 31-year-old has been out since the middle of July with right-elbow inflammation but is back to pitching in games and could return from the 15-day injured list sooner than later. Before his injury, Garrett was 7-3 with a 3.64 ERA (3.74 FIP), a 1.43 WHIP, his first four career saves, a career-high 63 strikeouts and 22 walks in 42 innings out of the Mets' bullpen. He could be a key relief arm for New York once he returns as the Mets look to secure a wild-card spot in the National League.

Reed Garrett Earns One-Out Save Monday

New York Mets relief pitcher Reed Garrett picked up his fourth save of the season in Monday's 9-7 extra-innings win over the Nationals. Garrett came in to pitch the bottom of the 10th inning up by three with two outs and runners on first and second. He allowed an RBI single but ended the game with a strikeout. The 31-year-old has seen seven save opportunities this season and has pitched well with seven wins and seven holds to go with a 3.20 ERA, a 13.50 K/9 rate, and a 4.35 BB/9 rate in 39 1/3 innings of work. He has filled in as interim closer throughout the season while Edwin Diaz has been either hurt or suspended. Diaz will resume closing duties when he returns, Garrett still seems like a worthwhile roto option given his high-leverage usage and his high strikeout rate.

Reed Garrett Picks Up Third Save

New York Mets reliever Reed Garrett collected his third save of the season on Thursday, tossing a clean ninth inning in a 3-2 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks. Garrett allowed a walk but got through the inning fairly easily otherwise. With Edwin Diaz being placed on the IL and struggling mightily before that, Garrett should be in line for save opportunities for at least a little while. Unfortunately, Garrett has had his own performance issues recently, allowing seven runs (six earned) in his last 2 IP before tonight. That said, it is a good sign that the team is still confident enough in the 31-year-old breakout to give him the opportunity to save this one. He is still a solid add in any leagues where saves matter in the hopes he can bounce back to his early-season self.

Reed Garrett Records Two-Inning Save

New York Mets reliever Reed Garrett closed out the Miami Marlins on Sunday, pitching the final two frames of a 7-3 victory. Garrett came in with a one-run lead, but the Mets scored three in the top of the ninth to give him a bigger cushion. The breakout reliever allowed just one hit while striking out four for his second save of the season. With Edwin Diaz being temporarily removed from the closer's role, Garrett should see a big uptick in save opportunities and should become the team's highest-leverage reliever. While that doesn't necessarily mean he will be the outright closer, he should still be added in most fantasy leagues at this time.

Nationals Reportedly Sign Reed Garrett To Minor League Deal

According to the Washington Post's Jesse Dougherty, the Washington Nationals have reportedly signed right-handed pitcher Reed Garrett to a minor league deal. The reliever was selected by the Detroit Tigers from the Texas Rangers in the 2018 Rule 5 draft and made 13 relief appearances for Detroit in 2019. He was later returned to the Rangers in May of that year. The 29-year-old allowed 14 earned runs and 13 walks in those 13 appearances, spanning 15.1 innings while striking out 10 batters. He'll provide the Nationals with some additional bullpen depth after late-inning options Will Harris, Tanner Rainey, Patrick Murphy, and Gabe Klobosits.
