Braves Sign Jackson Stephens, Sandy Leon To Minors Deals

The Atlanta Braves signed relief pitcher Jackson Stephens and catcher Sandy Leon to minor-league deals Tuesday, per The Athletic's David O'Brien. Stephens elected free agency in March after being outrighted to Triple-A Gwinnett by the Braves and served as a decent reliever for the Braves from 2022 through 2023. Leon should serve as catcher depth for the organization with Sean Murphy (oblique) on the injured list with an oblique injury but will not contribute much offensively. Neither of these players should factor into the fantasy landscape at this time.

Sandy Leon Inks Minors Deal With Royals

Free-agent catcher Sandy Leon and the Kansas City Royals have agreed to a minor-league deal with an invite to 2024 spring training. The veteran split the 2023 season between the Guardians and Rangers organizations, appearing in 22 games with the world-champion Rangers. He hit just .146 without zero homers, a 2.3% walk rate, and a 45.5% strikeout rate across just 44 trips to the plate in that time. Known for his defense, Leon again posted positive defensive metrics in the small sample size. A veteran of 557 big-league games, Leon is a career .208 hitter with 31 home runs and a .587 OPS across 1,729 trips to the plate. With Salvador Perez likely to get more rest behind the plate and MJ Melendez slated for full-time outfield duty, Leon could perhaps find his way to the majors but will likely serve as Triple-A mentorship and depth in 2024.

Sandy Leon Re-Signs With Rangers

Free-agent catcher Sandy Leon re-signed a minor-league deal with the Texas Rangers on Tuesday, according to sources. Leon was just released by the team on Monday, but he'll quickly make his return. The 34-year-old backstop will begin the season in the minor leagues and will provide the club with some veteran catching depth behind Jonah Heim. He has spent 11 years in the big leagues with five different organizations, but he has done very little with the bat. In 533 career games, Leon has hit just .210/.278/.314 with a .592 OPS, 31 home runs, 145 RBI and 154 runs scored with the Washington Nationals, Boston Red Sox, Cleveland Guardians, Miami Marlins and Minnesota Twins.

Sandy Leon Signs Minor-League Deal With Rangers

The Texas Rangers signed free-agent catcher Sandy Leon to a minor-league deal on Thursday that includes an invitation to major-league spring training, according to a source. Leon played in 33 combined games in 2022 with the Cleveland Guardians and Minnesota Twins, hitting .169/.298/.211 with no homers, four RBI and six runs scored in 86 plate appearances. He had meniscus surgery on his right knee in October and is unlikely to be on the Opening Day roster, as the team already has backstops Jonah Heim and Sam Huff. The 33-year-old veteran has played 11 years in the big leagues and has a career slash line of .210/.278/.314 with a .592 OPS and 31 home runs, so he's never been much of an offensive force.

Sandy Leon Reaches Base Three Times And Pitches On Friday

Miami Marlins catcher Sandy Leon reached base three times and pitched a scoreless inning in Friday's 9-2 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates. Leon got the start for a resting Jorge Alfaro and went 2-for-3 with a double, a single, a walk, and a run scored. The solid offensive performance left Leon with a .186 batting average and a .486 OPS. He hits like a pitcher, so he took the mound for the eighth inning when the score was 9-2. He ended up pitching a perfect inning, inducing one ground out and two fly outs. Leon was starting for a bit while Alfaro was on the injured list, but he's back to being a backup and even as a starter was not a worthwhile fantasy asset.

Sandy Leon Gets Day Off Thursday

Miami Marlins catcher Sandy Leon is not in the lineup for Thursday's game against the Philadelphia Phillies. Leon caught each of the last two games, going 1-for-8 at the plate with five strikeouts. Chad Wallach will get the start behind the plate and bat seventh against Phillies' righty Vince Velasquez.

Sandy Leon Called Up By The Marlins

The Miami Marlins called up catcher Sandy Leon from their Alternate Training Site on Wednesday morning. With Jorge Alfaro (hamstring) being placed on the 10-day injured list, the Marlins needed to add a catcher to their active roster. Leon will go right into the starting lineup, batting eighth and catching rookie pitcher Trevor Rogers in Wednesday's afternoon game. Leon had one solid offensive season, back in 2016. He doesn't need to be rostered in the vast majority of fantasy formats.

Sandy Leon Placed On Family Medical Emergency List

Cleveland Indians catcher Sandy Leon will not make the trip with the club to Pittsburgh as he has been put on the family medical emergency list, which forces him to miss at least three games. Roberto Perez will hold down full-time catcher duties with Leon not available. Leon had previously filled in during Perezs absence, producing a lackluster .119/.288/.214 slash line across 15 games. At this stage, owners can view him as a low-priced DFS consideration when he returns to the clubs active roster.

Sandy Leon Has A Perfect Saturday

Boston Red Sox catcher Sandy Leon finished 3-for-3 for two runs batted in during Saturday's 5-3 loss to the Yankees. RBI singles in the second and fourth innings gave Leon his ninth and 10th RBI of the year. It was just his second multi-hit game of the season, after beginning the year in Triple-A, and it raised his average to .216. The defensive-minded backstop draws just a handful of starts a week, and doesn't hold any fantasy value behind teammate Christian Vazquez who is hitting .297 with seven homers, and 20 RBI.

Sandy Leon Goes On Paternity Leave

The Boston Red Sox placed catcher Sandy Leon on the paternity list on Friday and called up catcher Oscar Hernandez from the minors in a corresponding move. Pitcher Chandler Shepard was designated for assignment to open a spot on the 40-man roster for Hernandez. Leon could be out a maximum of three games on the paternity list. Hernandez was hitting .111/.216/.178 in 16 games for Double-A Portland and Pawtucket this year. He'll back up Christian Vazquez this weekend.
