Josh Dobbs Joining Lions as Jared Goff's Backup

The Detroit Lions are signing quarterback Josh Dobbs to a one-year, $1.425 million contract with $475,000 fully guaranteed, according to Mike Garafolo. The move comes after Teddy Bridgewater stepped away from the team, creating an opening behind starter Jared Goff. Garafolo reports that the financial commitment reflects Detroit's plan for Dobbs to serve as its No. 2 quarterback. The 31-year-old spent last season with New England, appearing in four games and completing 7 of 10 passes for 65 yards. He has made 15 starts during his NFL career, giving Detroit an experienced option behind Goff while undrafted rookie Luke Altmyer continues to develop. Goff has already been ruled out for the entire preseason, so Dobbs should have an opportunity to get acclimated quickly once the signing becomes official.

Jared Goff Will Sit Out Entire Preseason

Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff will not play at any point during the preseason, head coach Dan Campbell told reporters Sunday. Campbell left little doubt about the plan, joking that even if Detroit ran out of quarterbacks, Goff still would not play and the team could turn to wide receiver Tom Kennedy instead. Goff is coming off another strong season, throwing for 4,564 yards, 34 touchdowns, and eight interceptions while completing 68.0% of his passes across 17 games. Detroit opens its preseason Thursday against Cincinnati, and several other key starters could also be held out. Goff's absence will put more attention on rookie Luke Altmyer, especially after Teddy Bridgewater decided to step away from the team. Altmyer should now see plenty of preseason work while Detroit evaluates him and searches for another veteran quarterback.

Jared Goff Looks to Have a "Great Grasp" on New Offense

Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff leads the NFL in passing yards and touchdowns over the past four seasons, so it should come as little surprise that he was listed among senior writer Tim Twentyman's 10 players who have impressed through the first two weeks of Lions training camp. Twentyman notes that the five-time Pro Bowler continues to wow with his ball placement and accuracy and appears to have "a great grasp of Drew Petzing's offense." Goff has one of the most feared surrounding casts in the league and a head coach unafraid to play to the final whistle, making his current ADP of QB16 all the more confounding following four straight top 10 fantasy finishes. In a year with a deep pool of quality options making it easier to wait at the quarterback position, Goff has week-winning upside and is a player to target in the closing rounds of 2026 drafts.

Jared Goff Remains a Strong Redraft Value at QB16

Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff keeps following the same fantasy pattern. He piles up passing numbers, finishes among the top 10, then gets pushed down draft boards because he offers almost nothing with his legs. Goff was the QB9 last season after completing 68% of his passes for 4,564 yards, 34 touchdowns, and eight interceptions. He added only 45 rushing yards and did not score on the ground. Detroit gives him enough help to survive that limitation. Amon-Ra St. Brown, Jameson Williams, Jahmyr Gibbs, and Sam LaPorta remain at the center of an offense that finished fourth in scoring, fifth in total yardage, and third in passing last year. There is a new variable with Drew Petzing taking over as offensive coordinator, and Goff was sacked 38 times in 2025. Still, he has finished inside the top 10 in each of his four healthy seasons with the Lions and is currently being drafted as the QB16. Managers who wait at quarterback can target Goff as a reliable value, especially when pairing him with a more mobile option for difficult matchups.

Can Jared Goff Help to Win Leagues in 2026?

Since the start of the 2022 season, Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff has led the NFL in passing yards and touchdowns. In four fully healthy seasons with the Lions, he has never finished outside the top 10 for fantasy, and despite expected improvements to both the team's offensive line and play calling ahead of the 2026 season, he is currently being drafted as the QB16. The Lions return both 1,000-yard receivers from a year ago, and with tight end Sam LaPorta expected back at full health and three-time Pro Bowl running back Jahmyr Gibbs ready to inherit a true bell cow role, an easy argument could be made for Goff's supporting cast as the strongest in the league. The former first overall pick has topped 4,400 passing yards and 29 touchdowns in each of the past four seasons, and with the Lions boasting what is on paper one of the league's most fantasy-friendly schedules, there is no reason to expect that streak should end in 2026. In a season where the third, or even fourth tier of fantasy quarterbacks is deep and flat, Goff may be the poster child for punting at the position and is capable of delivering a league-winning performance from the closing rounds of drafts.

Is Jared Goff's Stable Production Floor Undervalued by Dynasty Managers?

Dating back to 2022, Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff has now recorded four consecutive seasons with at least 4,400 passing yards and 29 touchdowns. Even through a rocky season overall in Detroit in 2025, Goff completed 68% of his pass attempts for 4,564 yards, 34 touchdowns, and eight interceptions. Goff's fantasy upside is limited by his complete lack of rushing ability, as he hasn't reached 100 rushing yards in a season since 2018. The Lions' offensive line has also deteriorated in quality in recent years, with tackle Penei Sewell the only truly plus starter remaining in the group. Still, Goff has an excellent group of pass-catchers around him in wide receivers Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jameson Williams, tight end Sam LaPorta, and running back Jahmyr Gibbs. As Goff enters his age-32 season, he projects as a high-floor, low-ceiling dynasty QB2 who may still be slightly undervalued in some leagues.

Jared Goff Continues to Have Dynasty Appeal at 31 Years Old

Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff may be 31 years old, but he continues to offer a stable quarterback option for managers in dynasty fantasy football leagues. Goff has been a top-10 fantasy quarterback in each of his last four seasons, benefitting from a strong supporting cast that features Amon-Ra St. Brown, Jameson Williams, Sam LaPorta (back), and Jahmyr Gibbs. He had one of the best seasons of his career last year, amassing 4,564 passing yards, 34 passing touchdowns, and eight interceptions. One of the biggest factors for Goff going forward is the protection in front of him. The veteran took a career-high 38 sacks last year, and he's not mobile enough to evade defenders. Fortunately, the Lions solidified their offensive line with Cade Mays and Blake Miller, both projected to take on starting roles. With improved protection, a terrific arm, and a productive supporting cast, Goff should remain in the low-end QB1 or high-end QB2 conversation in dynasty leagues for several years to come.

Jared Goff Remains a High-Floor Dynasty QB2 Heading into 2026

Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff put together another solid statistical season in 2025, completing 68% of his pass attempts for 4,564 yards, 34 touchdowns, and eight interceptions. Goff's complete lack of rushing ability limits his fantasy upside. However, the 31-year-old has now posted three consecutive seasons with at least 4,500 passing yards and 30 touchdowns, giving him a stable production floor. Heading into 2026, Goff still has a strong supporting cast of pass-catchers around him, led by wide receivers Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jameson Williams. Running back Jahmyr Gibbs is also a weapon in the passing game, and tight end Sam LaPorta (back) should be part of the equation as well after missing the final eight games of 2025 with a back injury. The Lions have some questions on the offensive line, but the team added veteran center Cade Mays in free agency and used a first-round pick in the 2026 Draft on Clemson tackle Blake Miller. As long as Detroit can keep Goff upright, he profiles as a steady dynasty QB2 with matchup-dependent streaming upside.

Jared Goff a Steady Dynasty Option Despite Age, Lack of Rushing Upside?

Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff is far from the flashiest name in fantasy football, but his reliability has allowed him to be a top-10 fantasy option year in and year out. Goff has ranked as the QB10 or higher in each of his four seasons, including a QB9 finish in 2025 as he tallied 4,564 passing yards, 34 passing touchdowns, and eight interceptions. He lacks rushing upside, but he also does a pretty good job protecting the football, which has allowed him to remain in the top-12 range. It also helps that he has a bunch of superstars at his disposal, including Jahmyr Gibbs at running back, Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jameson Williams at wide receiver, Sam LaPorta at tight end, and Penei Sewell in the trenches. Older, non-rushing quarterbacks aren't typically dynasty trade targets, but if we assume that Goff will produce similarly to Matthew Stafford in his thirties, then the Cal product can still be an intriguing offseason addition in dynasty leagues. Plus, he'll remain relatively affordable in trades as long as he lacks the rushing upside that quarterbacks like Trevor Lawrence and Justin Herbert possess. A current ranking as the QB23 in RotoBaller's dynasty rankings doesn't quite reflect the short-term QB1 value he could bring to a contender in dynasty leagues.

Jared Goff Should Have Safe Floor as QB1 Again Under New Offensive Coordinator

Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff was unable to lead the Lions back to the postseason in 2025, but he did plenty to help his fantasy managers, throwing for 4,564 yards, 34 touchdowns, and only eight interceptions in 17 starts. The 31-year-old veteran has been the picture of consistency in his last four years in Detroit, throwing for over 4,000 yards each year and 30-plus touchdown passes in three of the four seasons. Goff has been a Pro Bowler in three of the last four years, as well as the Lions continue to employ a pass-happy approach on offense under head coach Dan Campbell. In fantasy football, Goff finished last season as the QB6 overall, and he should remain a safe bet to be a top-10 signal-caller again when all is said and done in 2026. Detroit's offensive line in front of him could be a question mark, but Goff still has elite weapons in the passing game in Amon-Ra St. Brown, Jameson Williams, Isaac TeSlaa, and Sam LaPorta (back), plus one of the best running backs in the league behind him in Jahmyr Gibbs. New offensive coordinator Drew Petzing was with the Cardinals last year when they led the league in passing attempts, so expect Goff to continue to throw the football with regularity.
