Josh Metellus Signs a Three-Year Extension With Vikings

Minnesota Vikings Safety Josh Metellus and the Vikings reached an agreement Saturday on a three-year, $36 million contract extension with a max value of $42 million that includes $25 million guaranteed, per agent Drew Rosenhaus. Metellus has demonstrated considerable versatility in the Brian Flores 3-4 defense over the past few seasons, lining up at free safety, in the box, in the slot, and even as an edge defender. In 2024, Metellus recorded 103 tackles (63 solo), recorded five pass breakups, two interceptions, and one forced fumble. He will continue to play alongside six-time Pro Bowler Harrison Smith and try to help the Vikings compete in what could be the best division in the NFL in 2025, the NFC North.

Josh Metellus, Vikings Have Mutual Interest in Extension

The Athletic's Alec Lewis writes that safety Josh Metellus and the Minnesota Vikings have mutual interest in hammering out a contract extension, but it remains to be seen if they can find common ground on a deal. Metellus has been an integral contributor for defensive coordinator Brian Flores for his ability to play as a linebacker and in the slot, so the Vikings would surely like to keep his versatility around as he heads into the final year of his current contract. The 27-year-old defensive back is also a captain and contributes on special teams. The former sixth-rounder has had 100-plus combined tackles the last two years in Minnesota, and while his versatility could complicate extension talks, it also allows him to play up in the box more often than most safeties and rack up tackles for fantasy managers in IDP leagues.

Josh Metellus Moving To Slot Corner?

Minnesota Vikings defensive back Josh Metellus has been a backup safety and special teams ace in his first three seasons in the NFL, but Minnesota's new defensive staff made a clear effort to find him a place to play this offseason. Metellus worked extensively as the slot cornerback in the team's nickel set during offseason practices. Harrison Smith and Cam Bynum appear set as the starting safeties, but Metellus looked comfortable at nickel, and it's clear that the Vikings hope to see him on the field regularly this fall. The 25-year-old former sixth-rounder in 2020 out of Michigan has accumulated 64 tackles (48 solo), an interception, six passes defensed and two fumble recoveries in 48 games (three starts) so far in his first three seasons with the Vikes, but he looks primed for his biggest role yet in Year 4.

Vikings Take Josh Metellus With Second Sixth-Round Pick

The Minnesota Vikings selected Michigan safety Josh Metellus with the 205th overall pick in the sixth round, their second pick of the round. Metellus is stocky at 5-foot-11, 209 pounds, but he still has solid athleticism. The big thing with him is that he has the versatility to play anywhere at the second level or the deep middle of the field. Metellus had 74 tackles and two interceptions in his final season in college in 13 games, but he'll need to work on his pre-snap reads and taking better angles to his targets.
