Alex Lyon Suffers Setback in Recovery From Injury

Buffalo Sabres goaltender Alex Lyon (shoulder) has suffered a setback in his recovery, Bill Hoppe of the Olean Times Herald reports. Lyon was expected to make his season debut this week, but he had a setback in practice. The 33-year-old netminder, who had an impressive 20-10-4 record last season, is rehabbing a left shoulder injury. Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen and Colten Ellis have shared goaltending duties in Buffalo at the start of the season. They have helped the Sabres to a 4-3-1 record, but the team has the fourth-worst save percentage in the league (.857).

Alex Lyon Likely to Start Game 6 Against Canadiens

Buffalo Sabres goaltender Alex Lyon was the first goalie off the ice at Saturday's morning skate, Renaud Lavoie of TVA Sports reports. This indicates Lyon is likely to start Game 6 against the Montreal Canadiens. Buffalo has flipped between goalies in the playoffs and appears set to return to Lyon, who also started the first three games of the second-round matchup. Despite losing his spot to Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen in the middle of the series, Lyon has performed well in the postseason. He has posted a 4-3 record, a 2.25 goals-against average, and a .917 save percentage.

Alex Lyon Comes in and Shuts Down Boston

Buffalo Sabres goaltender Alex Lyon has won on the road in Boston before. On Thursday night, however, Boston went up 1-0, but that was the only goal the Bruins would score. Lyon ultimately stopped 24 shots in a huge 3-1 victory. That allowed the Sabres to go up 2-1 in their first-round series. Lyon stopped several one-timers from Boston as he secured the victory. At the very least, the backup goaltender has earned a look for Game 4 to be played on Sunday. Adding in the seven saves Lyon made in cleanup duty on Tuesday, one may believe Lyon could do this again.

Alex Lyon Available for Game 1

Buffalo Sabres goaltender Alex Lyon (lower body) will dress for Sunday's Game 1 against the Boston Bruins, Amalie Benjamin of NHL.com reports. It was initially believed that Lyon might not be available at the start of the postseason due to a lower-body injury. However, the 33-year-old will be ready to jump into action if needed. The Sabres are expected to start with Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen on Sunday night. Lyon recorded just two fewer wins than Luukkonen during the regular season, and the Finnish netminder must be sharp to avoid losing his No. 1 status in the playoffs.

Alex Lyon Expected to Miss Playoff Opener

Buffalo Sabres goaltender Alex Lyon (lower body) is expected to miss the team's playoff opener against the Boston Bruins, Mike Harrington of The Buffalo News reports. The 33-year-old sustained a lower-body injury earlier this month and won't be available for a fifth straight game on Wednesday night against the Dallas Stars. Colten Ellis is expected to start the matchup as Buffalo plans to rest several key players for the regular-season final, including No. 1 goaltender Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen. The Sabres are also likely to be without forward Noah Ostlund (upper body) at the start of the postseason.

Alex Lyon Questionable for Start of Postseason

Buffalo Sabres goaltender Alex Lyon (lower body) may not be available for selection at the start of the 2025-26 Stanley Cup Playoffs. On Thursday, Sabres head coach Lindy Ruff ruled Lyon out for a week, adding that there's a possibility the 33-year-old netminder won't be available for the start of the postseason. Lyon set a new franchise record with a 10-game winning streak this campaign and has gone 20-10-4 in 34 starts. He has a 2.77 goals-against average, a .907 save percentage, and three shutouts. While Lyon has mostly shared the crease with Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen, Colten Ellis impressed with a 37-save shutout in Thursday's 5-0 win over Columbus and could also be an option for the playoffs.

Alex Lyon Dealing With Lower-Body Injury

Buffalo Sabres goaltender Alex Lyon (lower body) won't dress for Wednesday's matchup with the New York Rangers, Matthew Fairburn of The Athletic reports. He left the morning skate early due to a lower-body injury. Since Buffalo carries three goaltenders, Lyon wasn't expected to dress anyway on Wednesday. But his injury could force Sabres head coach Lindy Ruff to rethink his plans for the final few regular-season games. Lyon has been impressive in 2025-26, posting a 20-10-4 record, a 2.77 goals-against average, a .907 save percentage, and three shutouts. Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen is scheduled to start on Wednesday, with Colten Ellis serving as his backup.

Alex Lyon Picks Up Victory Against Former Club

Buffalo Sabres goaltender Alex Lyon stopped 27 of 29 shots on goal in Friday's 3-2 victory against the Panthers. Lyon was excellent throughout the contest in his first start since the Olympic break, with the second Panthers goal coming with just 33 seconds remaining in the game after Sabres defenseman Rasmus Dahlin put the puck into his own net. Lyon has enjoyed a career-best season with a record of 14-8-3 to go along with two shutouts, a 2.69 goals-against average, and a .913 save percentage through 28 appearances.

Alex Lyon Practices on Sunday

Buffalo Sabres goaltender Alex Lyon (lower body) practiced on Sunday and could soon rejoin the action. On Jan. 7, Lyon was ruled out for 7-10 days due to a lower-body injury. He has been dealing with the issue for a bit, last playing on Dec. 29. Lyon has had a good campaign with the Sabres, posting a 10-6-3 record, a 2.82 goals-against average, a .906 save percentage, and one shutout. He had produced a seven-game winning streak before getting hurt. With Lyon sidelined, both Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen and Colten Ellis have taken turns in goal.

Alex Lyon to Miss at Least One More Week

Buffalo Sabres goaltender Alex Lyon (lower body) will be out for about 7-10 more days, Heather Engel of NHL.com reports. Lyon sustained a lower-body injury in late December, landing on the shelf after winning seven consecutive decisions. Buffalo has gone with Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen in all three games since Lyon was injured. The Finnish netminder has done solid work, posting a 2-1-0 record and allowing eight goals. With Lyon and Luukkonen in top form, the Sabres have been the hottest team in the NHL since December, joining the playoff race.

Alex Lyon to Miss "Bit of Time"

Buffalo Sabres goaltender Alex Lyon (lower body) will sit out Wednesday's contest against the Dallas Stars. On Wednesday morning, Sabres head coach Lindy Ruff said Lyon will miss "a bit of time" with a lower-body injury, so his absence may not be limited to one game. The in-form goalie, who has recorded seven straight victories, was hurt late against the St. Louis Blues on Monday. Colten Ellis (concussion) was activated from Injured Reserve and will dress as Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen's backup on Wednesday. While Luukkonen has lost his starting job to Lyon, he has recorded back-to-back wins, allowing only one goal in each contest.

Alex Lyon Nursing Lower-Body Injury

Buffalo Sabres goaltender Alex Lyon (lower body) could miss some time after skipping Tuesday's practice. Lyon picked up his seventh consecutive win on Monday versus the St. Louis Blues but also sustained a lower-body injury in the contest. It's unclear if Lyon will get a chance to extend his streak on New Year's Eve against the Dallas Stars. Recently, Lyon has been Buffalo's No. 1 option between the sticks, outplaying Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen. Colten Ellis (concussion) has also picked up starts for the Sabres this season, and head coach Lindy Ruff said on Tuesday that the team is ready to activate him from Injured Reserve if Lyon misses time.

Alex Lyon Bags Another Victory Monday

Buffalo Sabres goaltender Alex Lyon recorded a seventh-consecutive win on Monday against the St. Louis Blues in a 4-2 victory. The Blues got two pucks past Lyon inside the opening 8:09 of action, but the Sabres' offense kept his and the team's winning run alive. Buffalo has matched its fourth-longest streak in franchise history with nine consecutive wins. Lyon has played an integral part in the success, registering a 2.22 goals-against average and a .919 save percentage during the run of victories. The 33-year-old has improved his record for the season to 10-6-3. He boasts one shutout and has a 2.82 goals-against average and a .906 save percentage. After Monday night, Lyon is just two wins away from tying Gerry Desjardins' franchise record for the longest winning streak by a Sabres goaltender.

Alex Lyon Facing Tampa Bay On Saturday

According to Daniella Bruce, Detroit Red Wings goaltender Alex Lyon will get the starting nod on Saturday afternoon against the Tampa Bay Lightning. Lyon and Cam Talbot have alternated starts over the past two weeks and will follow suit on Saturday afternoon. Over his last two outings, Lyon picked up two victories with a .946 percent SV and a 1.86 GAA. Over his previous five outings before this winning streak, Lyon held a similar .911 percent SV with a 2.41 GAA. Overall, Lyon holds a 10-6-1 record across 21 outings this season. However, Lyon has a tougher matchup on Saturday afternoon as the Lightning have scored nine goals over their previous two contests. He is a high-risk play in DFS that is best to fade on Saturday's large slate of games.

Alex Lyon Unavailable Friday

Detroit Red Wings goaltender Alex Lyon (upper body) will not be in the lineup on Friday against Chicago. He sustained an upper-body injury in Tuesday's matchup against Ottawa. Cam Talbot replaced Lyon in the second period on Tuesday and will log his 20th start of the campaign against the Blackhawks. The 2024-25 season has been a tricky campaign for Talbot, who owns an 8-9-2 record. He has recorded one shutout with a 3.03 goals-against average and a .903 save percentage. The veteran netminder will hope to register his third consecutive win on Friday, a feat he hasn't accomplished since March of last year.

Alex Lyon Returns To Work Wednesday

Detroit Red Wings goaltender Alex Lyon (lower body) will be back in action on Wednesday against Philadelphia. He has shaken off a lower-body injury, which has kept Lyon sidelined for the entire month so far. The 32-year-old finished November strongly with back-to-back wins and will enter Wednesday's action with a 4-4-0 record. He has registered a 2.75 goals-against average with a .911 save percentage and one shutout. The Red Wings have struggled offensively this season, which has impacted Lyon's numbers. However, the Flyers are also a low-scoring team, so Lyon should fancy his chances of making a winning return.

Alex Lyon Starts For Red Wings On Monday

Detroit Red Wings goaltender Alex Lyon has been confirmed as the starter for Monday's meeting with the Islanders. Detroit goes back to the goalie who has already come out victorious twice from the same matchup this season. Lyon has a 2-0-0 record against the Islanders, with only one goal allowed. The most recent victory came last week with a 22-save effort in a 2-1 win. Lyon's overall record for the season stands at 3-4-0. He has allowed 2.85 goals with a .908 save percentage. While his form tends to be inconsistent, Lyon seems to have the Islanders' number and must be full of confidence ahead of Monday's outing.

Alex Lyon Struggles In First Appearance Of The Month

Detroit Red Wings goaltender Alex Lyon had a rough outing as he returned from a lower-body injury on Friday against Anaheim, allowing five goals on 28 shots in a 6-4 defeat. The Red Wings battled out a 3-1 lead, but Lyon couldn't keep ahold of it, conceding three goals in the third period. The 31-year-old netminder has now dropped three starts in a row, with his record plummeting to 2-4-0. Lyon has a 3.13 goals-against average and a .903 save percentage for the campaign. He will give up the crease to Cam Talbot against the Kings on Saturday and might have to wait for his next opportunity for a while because Lyon hasn't been getting the job done for Detroit.

Alex Lyon Dealing With Lower-Body Injury, Ville Husso Called Up

Detroit Red Wings goalie Alex Lyon (lower body) tweaked an injury in practice on Thursday and won't play in either of the team's back-to-back games on Friday and Saturday. Cam Talbot will get Friday's game against the Toronto Maple Leafs, while Ville Husso was called up from the AHL and will start Saturday against the New York Rangers. Neither make for a great stream, as both the Rangers and Leafs have offensive firepower. As for Lyon, head coach Derek Lalonde said he wasn't overly concerned about the chance of a long-term absence, so the goalie should be back soon.

Alex Lyon Collects Fourth Career Shutout

Detroit Red Wings goaltender Alex Lyon stoned the Islanders on Tuesday, finishing a 1-0 victory with a 29-save shutout. Patrick Kane scored the only goal as Lyon played a key role in the win. He needed to make nearly three times as many saves as Ilya Sorokin in the other net, with Detroit only firing off 11 shots on goal. This was Lyon's fourth career shutout. The 31-year-old has been a late bloomer and will be delighted with his early season form. Lyon carries a 2-1-0 record and has allowed only 1.46 goals with a .955 save percentage. He's competing for playing time with Cam Talbot, who's gone 1-1-0 so far while also boasting one shutout with a 3.31 goals-against average and a .907 save percentage.
