Olen Zellweger Scores First NHL Goal Sunday

Anaheim Ducks defenseman Oleg Wellweger scored the first goal of his NHL career as part of his team's 3-2 defeat at the hands of the Vancouver Canucks. The rookie, drafted in the second round of the 2021 NHL Entry Draft, now has four points on 24 shots, along with a minus-five rating, across the first 19 games of his NHL career. He has averaged 18:43 of ice time per game. The 20-year-old has had a big season with AHL San Diego as he has tallied 12 goals and 37 points in 44 games with the Gulls along with 16 penalty minutes and a minus-one rating. He tallied 22 goals and 52 points in 32 games with the WHL's Kamloops Blazers last season and should be a staple in the Ducks' blueline in the 2024-25 campaign.

Ducks Assign Olen Zellweger To The AHL

The Anaheim Ducks have assigned rookie defenseman Olen Zellweger to the American Hockey League's San Diego Gulls. The move was expected as it gives the blueliner a chance to play two AHL contests while the Ducks head into the All-Star break and subsequent bye week. He is expected to rejoin the big club when they return to action on Feb. 9. The 20-year-old has appeared in four games with the Ducks, tallying one assist and a plus-two rating in that time. He has spent the bulk of the season with the Gulls, recording eight goals and 25 points across 34 games in his first professional season following a successful five-year career in the Western Hockey League. The Ducks currently sit third-last in the NHL with an 18-30-2 record and will have a shot at another high draft pick after drafting center Leo Carlsson second overall in 2023.
