Aaron Civale Will Pitch Out of the Bullpen For the Cubs

The Chicago Cubs plan to use right-hander Aaron Civale out of the bullpen after claiming him off waivers from the Chicago White Sox on Sunday, Jesse Rogers of ESPN.com reports. Civale has struggled in 2025, logging a 5.26 ERA, 1.37 WHIP, and 74/33 K/BB ratio in 89 innings pitched with the Milwaukee Brewers and the White Sox. Ironically, the reason the Brewers traded Civale was that he was reluctant to pitch out of the bullpen for them, and he wanted to be a starting pitcher. Fast forward a few more months, and he is now pitching out of the bullpen for his third team in 2025. Civale's value is lessened as a long reliever, and for now, it appears that the Cubs will continue to stroll out Colin Rea and Javier Assad while Jameson Taillon (groin) and Michael Soroka (shoulder) return from the IL.

Aaron Civale Joins Cubs

The Chicago Cubs have claimed right-hander Aaron Civale off waivers from the crosstown-rival Chicago White Sox. Civale spent two and a half months with the White Sox after they acquired him from the Milwaukee Brewers for first baseman Andrew Vaughn in mid-June. While Vaughn has been a pleasant surprise for the Brewers, the Civale pickup did not pay dividends for the White Sox. He made 13 starts for them and went 2-7 with a 5.37 ERA in 67 innings, and the team was unable to flip him to a contender at the July 31 trade deadline. Between the Brewers and White Sox, the 30-year-old has gone 3-9 with a 5.26 ERA (4.25 xERA), a 1.37 WHIP, and 74:33 K:BB over 89 frames this season. It's unclear if Civale will join the Cubs' rotation, which is without the injured Jameson Taillon (groin) and Michael Soroka (shoulder), or work out of their bullpen.

Aaron Civale to Make White Sox Debut on Sunday

Chicago White Sox manager Will Venable said that newly-acquired right-hander Aaron Civale will make his debut with the team this Sunday on the road against the Texas Rangers at Globe Life Field. The White Sox acquired Civale and cash from the Milwaukee Brewers on Friday in exchange for first baseman and former third overall pick Andrew Vaughn. The 30-year-old requested a trade from the Brewers after they demoted him to a bullpen role and replaced him with pitching prospect Jacob Misiorowski. In Chicago, he'll be locked into a starting role for the rest of the year, but that's about where the positives end in terms of fantasy. Civale isn't going to be in line for many wins with the move to the Windy City and the worst team in the American League, and there isn't much strikeout upside. Due to an injury early in the year, he's made only five starts in 2025 and has an ERA just south of 5.00.

Aaron Civale Traded to the White Sox

The Chicago White Sox acquired right-hander Aaron Civale from the Milwaukee Brewers on Friday in exchange for first baseman Andrew Vaughn, sources tell ESPN's Jesse Rogers. Civale was bumped from the rotation this week in favor of pitching prospect Jacob Misiorowski and immediately requested a trade to somewhere where he'd start again. The 30-year-old should immediately move into Chicago's starting rotation, possibly as soon as this weekend against the Texas Rangers on the road. He's been limited to just five starts this year due to injury and has gone 1-2 with a 4.91 ERA (5.53 FIP) and 1.36 WHIP with 19 strikeouts and seven walks in 22 innings pitched. Civale has limited fantasy upside with a career 8.1 K/9 in 658 1/3 innings, and although he'll be back in a starting role, he's moving to the worst team in the American League.

Aaron Civale Requests Trade

Milwaukee Brewers right-hander Aaron Civale, who has been bumped to the bullpen from the starting rotation in favor of pitching prospect Jacob Misiorowski, has asked the organization for a trade, according to The Athletic. The 30-year-old veteran has made all 122 of his regular-season appearances in the big leagues as a starter, but he did pitch in relief in Game 1 of last year's wild-card playoff series against the New York Mets. He went 6-3 with a 3.53 ERA in 14 starts last year after being acquired in a trade from the Tampa Bay Rays. Civale strained his left hamstring in his season debut in 2025 but had a decent 3.32 ERA in 19 innings over four starts after returning on May 22. The Brewers have a surplus of starting pitching, and Brandon Woodruff (elbow, shoulder) is nearing a return after missing all of 2024. A change of scenery for Civale would likely be best for his fantasy value and real-life value.

Aaron Civale Moving to the Bullpen

With Milwaukee Brewers pitching prospect Jacob Misiorowski joining the team's starting rotation, manager Pat Murphy said that right-hander Aaron Civale will move to the bullpen for now. Civale could return to Milwaukee's rotation again at some point this year, but for now he'll pitch in a relief role, which pretty much kills what little fantasy value he might have had. The 29-year-old has missed time with injury this year and had made only five starts for the Brew Crew, going 1-2 with a 4.91 ERA (5.53 FIP) and 1.36 WHIP with 19 strikeouts and seven walks in 22 innings pitched. With right-hander Brandon Woodruff (elbow) expected to return soon, too, Civale's next chance to start could be a while if Misiorowski lives up to his potential in his first taste of big-league action. At best, Civale is a back-end rotation option in deep fantasy leagues when he's starting.

Aaron Civale to Make his Return on Thursday Night

Milwaukee Brewers right-hander Aaron Civale (hamstring) will be activated from the injured list and will make the start on Thursday night against the division-rival Pittsburgh Pirates, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel's Todd Rosiak. Civale is scheduled to throw anywhere from 75 to 85 pitches in his first MLB start since March 30 against the New York Yankees, when he gave up five earned runs on four hits (three homers) while walking one and striking out two in three innings. The 29-year-old is recovered from a strained left hamstring and has an excellent matchup a Pirates offense that ranks dead-last in OPS (.617). Although Civale won't go too deep in his first start back -- Carlos Rodriguez is scheduled to follow him -- it's still an enticing streaming opportunity. Civale threw nine scoreless innings in his two rehab starts for Triple-A Nashville.

Aaron Civale to Make Final Rehab Start on Tuesday

Milwaukee Brewers right-hander Aaron Civale (hamstring) made scoreless minor-league rehab starts for Triple-A Nashville on May 8 and 14 and is scheduled to make his final appearance with Nashville on Tuesday before rejoining Milwaukee's starting rotation, according to MLB.com. Civale threw five scoreless innings on 60 pitches in his most recent rehab outing last Wednesday for Nashville. The 29-year-old has been on the 15-day injured list since March 31 due to a strained left hamstring, but he's on the verge of returning to the major leagues. In his lone start in 2025 on March 30 against the New York Yankees, Civale was touched up for five earned runs on four hits (three homers) while walking one and striking out two in three innings. There's not a ton of strikeout upside here, but Civale can be an innings-eater for rotation depth in deep-mixed fantasy leagues.

Aaron Civale Throws Four Shutout Innings In Rehab Start

Milwaukee Brewers right-hander Aaron Civale (hamstring) started his minor-league rehab assignment off the right way on Thursday with Triple-A Nashville, tossing four shutout innings with one hit allowed, one walk and three strikeouts in a no-decisions. Civale will need another rehab start on the farm after throwing 50 pitches in the efficient outing on Thursday, but after that, he's expected to rejoin Milwaukee's starting rotation. The 29-year-old is recovering from a left-hamstring strain that landed him on the injured list in late March after he had made just one start for the Brew Crew. He gave up five earned runs on four hits (three home runs) in just three innings in his season debut at the New York Yankees on March 30. Civale has limited upside in fantasy because of his below-average strikeout rate, but he could serve as rotation depth in deeper leagues when he returns.

Aaron Civale To Start Rehab Assignment On Thursday

Milwaukee Brewers right-hander Aaron Civale (hamstring) threw live batting practice last Saturday and will start his minor-league rehab assignment on Thursday with Triple-A Nashville, according to MLB.com's Adam McCalvy. Civale made only one start for the Brewers before straining his left hamstring and landing on the 15-day injured list. The 29-year-old had a setback with his injured hamstring in early April, which is why he still hasn't returned to Milwaukee's starting rotation. Because of his long layoff, he's most likely going to need at least several rehab starts in the minors before the Brew Crew feels comfortable activating him from the IL. But barring a setback, he could be back in the big leagues by mid- May. In his first start of the year on March 30 against the New York Yankees, Civale gave up five earned runs on four hits (three homers) while walking one and striking out two in only three innings for a loss.
