Bubba Chandler to Start on Saturday

Pittsburgh Pirates right-handed pitching prospect Bubba Chandler will start on Saturday against the Athletics, manager Don Kelly announced. It'll be the third start for the highly touted Chandler, who has gone 2-1 with a 5.66 ERA, a 1.16 WHIP, and 19:4 K:BB over five appearances and 20 2/3 innings. The 23-year-old was brilliant last Saturday in a win over the Washington Nationals, whom he held to one run on two hits with seven strikeouts against no walks in six frames. He'll face a stiff test versus the Athletics' offense, which is seventh in the majors in OPS and 12th in runs scored in 2025. The A's rank an even better third and eighth, respectively, in those categories this month.

Bubba Chandler Shines on Saturday

Pittsburgh Pirates right-handed pitching prospect Bubba Chandler turned in the best start of his young career in a 5-1 win over the Washington Nationals on Saturday. Chandler, who did not factor into the decision, took a perfect game into the sixth inning before allowing two singles and an earned run. The Pirates pulled him after six, and Chandler finished the game with seven strikeouts and no walks on 81 pitches (56 strikes). It was an encouraging bounce-back performance by the 22-year-old, who the Milwaukee Brewers rocked for nine earned runs in 2 2/3 innings in his first career start last Sunday. In five appearances since the Pirates promoted him on Aug. 22, Chandler has recorded a 5.66 ERA with a 1.16 WHIP, 19 strikeouts, and four walks over 20 2/3 frames. He's scheduled to make his next start on Friday against the Athletics.

Bubba Chandler to Make First Start on Sunday

Pittsburgh Pirates pitching prospect Bubba Chandler is scheduled to make his first career big-league start against the Milwaukee Brewers on Sunday, according to interim manager Don Kelly. Chandler has made three four-inning outings for the Pirates since being recalled in late August. Now, Chandler is scheduled to make his first official big league start this weekend. It's unclear how deep he'll pitch into the game, but a four or five inning outing seems likely. Since being recalled, Chandler has allowed three runs on nine hits while striking out nine batters across 12 innings of work. He has promising long-term upside and is worth a look as a streaming option on Sunday.

Bubba Chandler Dominant in Second MLB Outing

Pittsburgh Pirates right-handed pitching prospect Bubba Chandler was sharp in his second MLB outing on Wednesday, during their victory against the St. Louis Cardinals. Similar to his MLB debut, the Pirayes opted to deploy their top pitching prospect out of the bullpen in a long relief role. In this outing, Chandler logged four innings of work. He did not allow a run and allowed just one hit. He struck out three and served up just one free pass. He was also credited as the winning pitcher. Through his first eight MLB innings, Chandler has yet to surrender a run while posting a 0.50 WHIP with a 6:1 K:BB. Despite struggling during most of the second half at Triple-A, Chandler appears to have found his footing in the big leagues rather quickly. Despite being in a long relief role, he remains a must-start option in all standard leagues for the remainder of the campaign.

Bubba Chandler Records Four-Inning Save in Debut

Pittsburgh Pirates standout pitching prospect Bubba Chandler more than matched the hype in his major league debut against the Colorado Rockies on Friday. The 22-year-old right-hander, who ranks as MLB Pipeline's top pitching prospect, came out of the bullpen and threw four scoreless innings to earn the save in a 9-0 victory. Chandler became the fourth pitcher ever to collect a four-inning save in his first game in the majors. He did it on 40 pitches (29 strikes) while allowing two hits, striking out three, and issuing no walks. Chandler flashed his intimidating velocity along the way, throwing the game's 13 fastest pitches, which ranged from 98.2 to 100.4 mph. Although he's beginning his career in relief, saves should be a rarity for Chandler, especially with the team expected to give him some starts over the final few weeks of the season. Regardless, his first appearance in the bigs couldn't have gone much better.

Bubba Chandler to Join Pirates on Friday

The Pittsburgh Pirates will promote prized right-handed pitching prospect Bubba Chandler to the majors before Friday's game against the Colorado Rockies, Noah Hiles of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. While Chandler will initially work as a long reliever for the Pirates, he'll also have a chance to start games, according to Hiles. Now 22 years old, Chandler became a Pirate when they selected him in the third round of the 2021 draft. That pick (72nd overall) has proven to be a steal, as Chandler is now regarded as one of the elite pitching prospects in the sport. MLB Pipeline ranks Chandler as the game's seventh-best prospect overall and notes that the 6-foot-3, 218-pounder "has rapidly evolved from an athlete and thrower to a complete pitcher with a real idea of how to use all four of his pitches effectively." The hard-throwing Chandler has logged 100 innings over 24 starts at the Triple-A level this year and posted a 4.05 ERA with a 1.48 WHIP and 121 strikeouts against 53 walks. Chandler has struggled with command as the season has gone on, and given that he'll pitch in a bulk role at first, fantasy managers should temper their expectations for the rest of 2025. UPDATE: Chandler will make his MLB debut on Friday against the Rockies and serve as the bulk reliever behind opener Braxton Ashcraft.

Pirates' Bubba Chandler Staying at Triple-A

The Pittsburgh Pirates have yet to announce their starter for Sunday, but it won't be Bubba Chandler. The 22-year-old right-hander will remain in Triple-A, where he's scheduled to start tonight. Many expected Chandler to make his MLB debut this weekend, but the Pirates are opting for more development time. The hard-throwing prospect owns a 5-5 record with a 3.82 ERA and a strong 27.6% strikeout rate this season. While fantasy managers will need to remain patient, Chandler remains one of the system's most exciting arms and could debut late this year or open 2026 in the rotation.

Bubba Chandler Allows Three Runs in Latest Outing

Pittsburgh Pirates right-handed pitching prospect Bubba Chandler struggled in his recent outing at Triple-A. Facing Omaha, the top pitching prospect in Pittsburgh served up six hits and three runs across four innings of work. He allowed two free passes and struck out only three. This was a bit of a step back compared to his previous outing, where he also allowed three runs but struck out seven and served up just one walk. Over his last eight starts, Chandler has had very mixed results, holding an overall 4.42 ERA with a 1.63 WHIP. During these 38 2/3 innings, Chandler has tallied 42 strikeouts with 29 walks. Through 96 2/3 innings at Triple-A this season, Chandler has posted a modest 3.82 ERA and a 1.42 WIP. Given his inconsistency, fantasy managers should only consider stashing him in deeper 12+ team formats.

Bubba Chandler Has Mixed Results in Tuesday's Outing

Pittsburgh Pirates right-handed pitching prospect Bubba Chandler allowed three runs on eight hits and one walk while striking out seven against Triple-A Omaha. Chandler's swing and miss stuff was on display in this start, generating 17 swings and misses on 48 swings. His high 90s fastball did most of the work with 11 whiffs, with each of his secondary offerings producing at least one. However, the eight hits allowed tied a season high. It wasn't a ton of loud contact with an 88.2 mph average exit velocity, but it limited his efficiency. Positively, he continues to stretch out and reached 91 pitches in the outing. For the season, the top prospect holds a 3.69 ERA, 1.39 WHIP, and a 113:46 K:BB ratio in 92.2 innings. His MLB debut should be expected to come relatively soon, and he'd be viewed as a priority add in standard leagues.
