Bubba Chandler Shows his Strikeout Upside With Career-High 11 Strikeouts

Pittsburgh Pirates young right-hander Bubba Chandler had his best start of the season on Friday night in Toronto against the Blue Jays, but he still picked up his sixth loss of the season. Chandler, who has had issues with his control in his first full season in the big leagues in 2026 with the Bucs, was outstanding on Friday night in Canada, allowing three runs (one earned) on just two hits while walking three and striking out a career-high 11 in five innings of work to lower his season ERA to 4.79. The 23-year-old former third-rounder in 2021 threw 99 pitches and generated 22 swings and misses. It was definitely a nice rebound outing for Chandler, who allowed five runs (four earned) with four walks and only two strikeouts in a season-low three innings in his last appearance on May 16 against the Philadelphia Phillies. His strikeout upside makes him intriguing, but he does not have an ideal upcoming matchup against the division-rival Chicago Cubs at home next week. In his first start against Chicago on April 12, Chandler allowed three earned runs on five hits (two homers) while walking two and fanning four in 5 1/3 frames for a no-decision.

Bubba Chandler's Lack of Control Making him Hard to Trust

Pittsburgh Pirates right-hander Bubba Chandler has plenty of long-term upside, but so far in his first full season in the big leagues, he has struggled to control the baseball, allowing a league-high 27 free passes in his 39 innings over his first eight starts in 2026. Chandler has gone 1-4 in the early going with a 4.62 ERA (5.53 FIP) and 1.46 WHIP with 34 strikeouts. The 23-year-old former third-round pick in 2021 walked 13 batters in three starts from April 23 to May 5. In his most recent outing, though, Chandler went five innings against the punchless San Francisco Giants, giving up two earned runs on five hits while walking just one and striking out three for a no-decision. It was encouraging that he only walked one batter his last time out, but until he can show us that he can command his arsenal more consistently, Chandler is going to be a volatile fantasy starter. His next start will come against the underperforming Philadelphia Phillies at home. Start Chandler at your own risk.

Bubba Chandler Struggles Against Texas, Cause for Concern?

Pittsburgh Pirates right-hander Bubba Chandler had his worst outing of the year on Thursday in Texas in a 6-1 loss to the Rangers at Globe Life Field. Chandler picked up his second loss of the season by allowing six earned runs on seven hits (two homers) while walking three and striking out four in just four innings of work. The big blow against the young 23-year-old hurler was a three-run homer by shortstop Corey Seager. In his first five starts of his first full season in the big leagues with the Pirates, Chandler is sporting a 1-2 record, 4.88 ERA (5.69 FIP), 1.50 WHIP, and 21:16 K:BB in 24 innings pitched. His 16 walks currently lead the league, and Chandler must improve his control on the mound if he wants to reach his ceiling in the big leagues. His next scheduled matchup is set for next week against the division-rival St. Louis Cardinals, who currently rank 21st in baseball with a .695 OPS.

Bubba Chandler Struggles with Command Again, Becoming Risky Fantasy Asset?

Pittsburgh Pirates starting pitcher Bubba Chandler took the loss in his team's 5-0 loss to the Padres on Monday night. While Chandler did pick up four strikeouts in 4 1/3 innings, he issued four walks and was charged with three earned runs. In just 8 2/3 innings in his first two starts, he has issued 10 free passes, which is a major concern after he only walked four batters in 31 1/3 innings in the majors last year. He walked 11 in 11 spring training innings as well, so it's not just a small sample-size issue anymore. Chandler still has a very high ceiling and can dominate with a high strikeout ceiling, but his control issues are a major concern for his fantasy managers and the Pirates. He'll make his second start of the week on Sunday in Chicago against the Cubs, and he'll remain a high-risk, boom-or-bust fantasy asset until he gets his control back.

Bubba Chandler Struggles to Command Pitches in Season Debut

Pittsburgh Pirates right-handed pitching prospect Bubba Chandler struggled to command his pitches in his season debut on Tuesday evening. Facing the Cincinnati Reds, Chandler tossed 4 1/3 innings with one run (unearned), no hits, and six punchouts. However, he allowed a hefty six free passes, which has limited his effectiveness. While he was able to keep runs and hits off the board, his command remains a serious issue. Last season, Chandler allowed 53 free passes over just 100 innings at the Triple-A level. While he struck out 121 hitters in this stint, his weak command significantly hindered his upside. While he carried a near-perfect 3.2% BB% over his first stint in the majors in 2025 (31 1/3 innings), seeing him command stumble again is not a good sign. While the high-end strikeout upside is still elite, he remains a difficult pitcher to trust on a weekly basis. He will look to bounce back facing the San Diego Padres next week.

Bubba Chandler Carrying Some Momentum Into 2026

Pittsburgh Pirates pitching prospect Bubba Chandler appears set to open the season in the team's starting rotation, though no official confirmation has been made yet by the team. Right now, RosterResource projects the Pirates' top-ranked pitching prospect as the team's No. 3 starter. The right-hander didn't have the cleanest of springs, but looked sharp his last time out, allowing just one run on one hit while striking out eight batters and walking only one over five innings of work. The 6-foot-3 hurler finished 2025 on a high note as well, allowing just two earned runs over his final three starts while recording a pristine 19:0 K:BB in 16 2/3 innings pitched. Hopefully he can carry that momentum into 2026, and if he can, then the 23-year-old could end up as a real value pick in fantasy drafts, currently going around pick No. 160, whereas RotoBaller ranks him at 145 overall.

Bubba Chandler Struggles to Command Pitches Again in Second Outing

Pittsburgh Pirates right-handed pitching prospect Bubba Chandler stumbled in his second outing of spring training on Sunday afternoon. The top pitching prospect entered the game in relief behind Braxton Ashcraft and struggled, tossing 1 1/3 innings of two-run ball. In this brief appearance, Chandler allowed a high three walks with only two strikeouts. Chandler has now logged three innings in the spring with six earned runs and a modest 4:7 K:BB. Last summer, Chandler struggled with his command at Triple-A, which kept him in the minor leagues for most of the season. However, in the majors, Chandler looked far more comfortable, allowing only four total free passes over 31 2/3 innings. Managers should continue to keep a close eye on his progression in camp. While he remains locked into a starring role, Chandler could see his upside significantly capped due to his inconsistent command.

Bubba Chandler Stumbles in Spring Training Debut

Pittsburgh Pirates right-handed pitching prospect Bubba Chandler struggled in his spring debut on Monday afternoon against the New York Yankees. Across 1 1/3 innings, the top prospect allowed four earned runs with a high four free passes. He did not allow a hit and added two strikeouts. Chandler's command was a major issue during the 2025 season, and it appears to be resurfacing. Last season, the 23-year-old was expected to nearly break camp with the Pirates but would not earn the call until August. At Triple-A, Chandler carried a modest 4.05 ERA, 1.48 WHIP, with a 121:53 K:BB across 100 innings. However, in the majors, he looked far more comfortable, posting 31:4 K:BB over 31 1/3 innings. Chandler remains a top breakout candidate, but given his uneven command, he holds some risk in drafts.

Bubba Chandler's Stock is Rising Ahead of Spring Training

Pittsburgh Pirates pitching prospect Bubba Chandler has seen his fantasy stock rise following his strong conclusion to the season, as he appears poised for a breakout campaign in 2026. Chandler made his MLB debut with the Pirates in late August of 2025. Through his first 31 1/3 innings in the big leagues, the right-hander posted a modest 4.01 ERA with a stellar 0.93 WHIP. However, his ERA is significantly inflated due to the nine-run outing on September 7. Removing this one fluke outing, the 23-year-old would have instead carried a dominant 1.57 ERA, 0.89 WHIP, and a 28:1 K:BB across 28 2/3 innings in the big leagues. While Chandler struggled at times at Triple-A before his promotion, once he reached Pittsburgh, the top prospect looked like his typical self. Seeing that he showed elite command and above-average strikeout upside, Chandler could enjoy an impressive first full season in the big leagues and is worth viewing as an SP3/SP4 with upside.

Bubba Chandler to Start on Saturday

Pittsburgh Pirates right-handed pitching prospect Bubba Chandler will start on Saturday against the Athletics, manager Don Kelly announced. It'll be the third start for the highly touted Chandler, who has gone 2-1 with a 5.66 ERA, a 1.16 WHIP, and 19:4 K:BB over five appearances and 20 2/3 innings. The 23-year-old was brilliant last Saturday in a win over the Washington Nationals, whom he held to one run on two hits with seven strikeouts against no walks in six frames. He'll face a stiff test versus the Athletics' offense, which is seventh in the majors in OPS and 12th in runs scored in 2025. The A's rank an even better third and eighth, respectively, in those categories this month.
