Coby Mayo Takes Pitch Off Hand, X-Rays Negative

Baltimore Orioles first baseman Coby Mayo (hand) had an injury scare Friday when he took a 97 mph fastball off the right hand in a 10-7 loss to the Houston Astros, but X-rays came back negative after the game. The 23-year-old stayed in to finish the contest after Astros reliever Bryan Abreu hit him to lead off the bottom of the ninth inning. Mayo ended the night 0-for-3 with a walk and a run scored to continue a disappointing offensive season. Across 182 plate appearances, Mayo has hit .201/.280/.348 with five homers, 19 RBI, and 18 runs. It's unclear if he'll be in the lineup when the Orioles face the Astros on Saturday.

Coby Mayo Avoids Serious Injury on Tuesday

According to Andy Kostka of The Baltimore Banner, Orioles third baseman Coby Mayo avoided a serious injury during the second half of their doubleheader against the Toronto Blue Jays on Tuesday evening. While covering first base, Mayo stretched to make a catch and twisted his leg. However, he was able to remain in the game and did not show any signs that this injury limited him later in the game. Fantasy managers should continue to monitor his status in case the Orioles opt to give him time off later in the week. The former top prospect has enjoyed a productive week at the plate, posting a .350/.500/.750 slash line with two doubles and two home runs over his last eight games. The 23-year-old could have an even larger role in the back half of the season if the Orioles were to trade corner infielders like Ryan O'Hearn and Ramon Urias at the deadline.

Coby Mayo Absent on Monday

Baltimore Orioles corner infielder Coby Mayo is absent from the starting lineup ahead of Monday's game against the Tampa Bay Rays. Mayo will head to the bench after starting in each of the last two games. He was productive in those games, going 3-for-7 with an RBI and a walk. Unfortunately, the O's aren't ready to commit to Mayo being a full-time player. Instead, Mayo has been playing exclusively against left-handed pitching, which is why he's sidelined on Monday. That being said, Mayo isn't going to offer much value outside of deep leagues with him only platooning. Ryan O'Hearn will cover first base and bat fifth versus right-hander Ryan Pepiot.

Coby Mayo Riding Pine on Friday

Baltimore Orioles third base prospect Coby Mayo will be on the bench on Friday when they begin a series against the Los Angeles Angels. The slugging third baseman is currently in the midst of a 3-for-21 skid over his last seven contests. During this stretch, he has struck out six times and hit just one extra-base hit. Since returning to the big leagues on May 30, Mayo has tallied just four total hits, with only one of them going for extra bases. While the No. 17-ranked prospect in the sport has shown immense power upside at Triple-A, he has yet to take the next step in the big leagues. Through 29 total games with the Orioles, the No. 2-ranked prospect in the system has held a .117/.209/.130 slash line. Given his underwhelming play and inconsistent playing time, he should only be rostered in 12+ team formats.

Coby Mayo Returning to Big Leagues

Baltimore Orioles corner infielder Coby Mayo is reportedly headed back to the big leagues. Mayo was scratched ahead of his game in Triple-A on Friday. The 23-year-old is headed back to Baltimore with Ryan Mountcastle (hamstring) heading to the injured list. Mayo is a top prospect in the O's system, but hasn't really been given a fair shot. He played in 17 games with the O's last season and only four games so far this season. Mayo has shown success in the minors and appears ready for a chance at the big league level. The loss of Mountcastle should mean that Mayo gets an everyday chance at first base. He's not a must-have player, but is certainly someone to keep an eye on right now.

Coby Mayo Hits Home Run on Sunday

Baltimore Orioles third base prospect Coby Mayo went 2-for-5 with a home run during Sunday's contest against Triple-A Saint Paul. This was Mayo's third-straight game tallying at least one hit and second-straight game tallying at least two hits. The 23-year-old earned his second call to the majors earlier this season but only saw 12 at-bats during this brief taste. Since returning to the minor leagues, Mayo has been in a slump at the plate, holding a .167/.262/.333. However, his productive play this past weekend should help him break this slump. Before returning to Baltimore, Mayo was holding a .252/.346/.523 line with seven doubles and six long balls during his first 28 games of the Triple-A regular season. Fantasy managers should expect the slugging third baseman to remain in the mix to return to the majors throughout the season.

Coby Mayo Sent Back To Triple-A

The Baltimore Orioles announced that they optioned infield prospect Coby Mayo to Triple-A Norfolk after Thursday's game to make room for the return of outfielder Tyler O'Neill (neck) from the 10-day injured list. Although Mayo played in just four games in his second stint in the big leagues after a disappointing debut performance in 2024, he had just one hit in 12 at-bats with a walk and six strikeouts, and he also didn't endear himself to the coaching staff with his play on defense. In his first 21 big-league games, the team's No. 2-ranked prospect per MLB Pipeline, has gone 5-for-53 (.094) with no homers or RBI, five walks and 28 strikeouts. Mayo will head back to Norfolk for the time being but should rejoin Baltimore sooner than later as he looks to finally break through at the major-league level this year. Fantasy managers in dynasty/keeper leagues are getting frustrated.

Coby Mayo Making The Start On Sunday

Baltimore Orioles prospect Coby Mayo is starting at third base and is batting seventh for Sunday's series finale against the visiting Kansas City Royals and right-hander Michael Lorenzen. Mayo, the team's No. 2 prospect per MLB Pipeline, was promoted from Triple-A Norfolk on Saturday and came off the bench in the 4-0 loss to go 0-for-2 with a strikeout. The 23-year-old should see regular playing time at the hot corner for Baltimore with both Jordan Westburg (hamstring) and Ramon Urias (hamstring) on the injured list, making him attractive in deep-mixed fantasy leagues for the short-term. In his MLB debut in 2024, Mayo was overmatched, going 4-for-41 with 22 strikeouts. He had an impressive .869 OPS with Norfolk before his promotion, though, so those that have him in dynasty/keeper leagues will be hoping he'll fare better this time around.

Coby Mayo Promoted To Major Leagues

The Baltimore Orioles are promoting third base prospect Coby Mayo, who is set to join the major league roster before Saturday's contest against the Kansas City Royals. Mayo made his MLB debut last season but struggled during his first stint. Across 17 games, Mayo posted an underwhelming .098/.196/.098 slash line with just four hits (all singles). He posted a 22:4 K:BB. However, at the Triple-A level, Mayo has flashed elite upside. Earlier this season, the No. 2-ranked prospect in the Baltimore system posted an impressive .252/.346/.523 slash line with seven doubles, six home runs with a 27:16 K:BB. Last summer, Mayo held a .287/.364/.562 line across 89 games at Triple-A. Fantasy managers should monitor his status in the majors as he could eventually carve out a full-time role in the Baltimore starting nine. Given his power upside, he should be added to all standard leagues for the time being.

Coby Mayo With Two-Homer Game At Triple-A On Wednesday

Baltimore Orioles corner infield prospect Coby Mayo has begun to catch fire at Triple-A Norfolk, going 3-for-4 with a walk, a double, two home runs, three RBI, and two runs scored on Wednesday. It was the 23-year-old's fourth multi-hit game in his last six, going 9-for-23 (.391) over that stretch and pushing his slash line up to .268/.368/.567 for the year, with six home runs and a 16:26 BB:K in 26 games (117 PA). Baltimore's second-ranked prospect continues to be the odd-man out for playing time, as the O's recalled 28-year-old corner infielder Emmanuel Rivera from Norfolk on Tuesday after Jordan Westburg hit the IL. Despite a 47.8 percent strikeout rate in his 46-plate appearance debut last season, the 6-foot-4 slugger should get another chance in Baltimore this season, or elsewhere if they have no intentions of using him in the majors, but whenever he's recalled, power needy managers in deep leagues should consider rostering MLB's 13th-ranked prospect.
