Coby Mayo Headed Back to the Hot Corner?

Baltimore Orioles first baseman/third baseman Coby Mayo was the subject of plenty of trade rumors this offseason after the O's signed Pete Alonso to play 1B on a five-year deal. Mayo has been an elite power prospect for the last few seasons, but he hasn't really established himself in the majors yet. He played 85 games for the O's last year, hitting .217 with 11 homers and a .303 wOBA. He and Ryan Mountcastle will both be looking for playing time after the Alonso addition, but space could be opening up with 2B Jackson Holliday (hand) needing surgery and Jordan Westburg (oblique) behind schedule in his ramp-up to Opening Day. Mayo could be part of the solution to fill in for Holliday, since he could play 3B, while Westburg slides to 2B. Mayo played 1B mostly last season but came through the minors at 3B, where he was working out on a backfield in Orioles spring training on Wednesday. If Mayo can build on his strong September and have a strong spring at the plate, he could earn an Opening Day roster spot, and his power potential is intriguing enough to make him worth watching as a late-round flier.

Coby Mayo Could See Work in the Outfield

Baltimore Orioles president of baseball operations Mike Elias said that Coby Mayo's focus will be at first base in spring training, but that the coaching staff will also talk to him about the possibility of additional positional focus, such as the corner outfield, according to Andy Kostka of The Baltimore Banner. The 24-year-old could also see time at third base, a position he played coming up in the farm system. Most of Mayo's playing time in 2025 came at first base, but the Orioles signed Pete Alonso in the offseason, and Samuel Basallo and Ryan Mountcastle are also options there. Mayo became an everyday player in Baltimore in the final two months of last season and finished with a .217/.299/.388 slash line, .687 OPS, 11 home runs, 28 RBI, 30 runs, and three steals in 85 games. He hit the ball hard (34.5% hard-hit rate), but he also struck out over 30% of the time. Playing time could be an issue in Baltimore if Mayo struggles at the plate. He's ranked as RotoBaller's No. 46 fantasy first baseman.

Uncertainty Clouding Coby Mayo's Role?

Baltimore Orioles corner infielder Coby Mayo was optioned to Triple-A last season, and he publicly expressed his frustration by describing the demotion as a lose-lose situation. He's still not a lock to make the Opening Day roster in 2026, as Roch Kubatko of MASN writes that "optioning Mayo is one solution." He also notes that the Orioles could put Mayo on their 26-man roster if they don't carry a utility infielder. Additionally, while Kubatko didn't mention it, we can't rule out a potential Mayo trade, especially if he and the organization don't have the same vision for his role. For now, though, he's an Oriole and will use spring training as an opportunity to make the big-league club. He slashed .217/.299/.388 through 85 MLB games last season, contributing 95 wRC+ and 11 home runs with a 9.2% walk rate and 28.6% strikeout rate. Although he came up as a third baseman, he spent most of his innings last year at first base, where he tallied -2 OAA and -2 FRV.

Coby Mayo Takes Pitch Off Hand, X-Rays Negative

Baltimore Orioles first baseman Coby Mayo (hand) had an injury scare Friday when he took a 97 mph fastball off the right hand in a 10-7 loss to the Houston Astros, but X-rays came back negative after the game. The 23-year-old stayed in to finish the contest after Astros reliever Bryan Abreu hit him to lead off the bottom of the ninth inning. Mayo ended the night 0-for-3 with a walk and a run scored to continue a disappointing offensive season. Across 182 plate appearances, Mayo has hit .201/.280/.348 with five homers, 19 RBI, and 18 runs. It's unclear if he'll be in the lineup when the Orioles face the Astros on Saturday.

Coby Mayo Avoids Serious Injury on Tuesday

According to Andy Kostka of The Baltimore Banner, Orioles third baseman Coby Mayo avoided a serious injury during the second half of their doubleheader against the Toronto Blue Jays on Tuesday evening. While covering first base, Mayo stretched to make a catch and twisted his leg. However, he was able to remain in the game and did not show any signs that this injury limited him later in the game. Fantasy managers should continue to monitor his status in case the Orioles opt to give him time off later in the week. The former top prospect has enjoyed a productive week at the plate, posting a .350/.500/.750 slash line with two doubles and two home runs over his last eight games. The 23-year-old could have an even larger role in the back half of the season if the Orioles were to trade corner infielders like Ryan O'Hearn and Ramon Urias at the deadline.

Coby Mayo Absent on Monday

Baltimore Orioles corner infielder Coby Mayo is absent from the starting lineup ahead of Monday's game against the Tampa Bay Rays. Mayo will head to the bench after starting in each of the last two games. He was productive in those games, going 3-for-7 with an RBI and a walk. Unfortunately, the O's aren't ready to commit to Mayo being a full-time player. Instead, Mayo has been playing exclusively against left-handed pitching, which is why he's sidelined on Monday. That being said, Mayo isn't going to offer much value outside of deep leagues with him only platooning. Ryan O'Hearn will cover first base and bat fifth versus right-hander Ryan Pepiot.

Coby Mayo Riding Pine on Friday

Baltimore Orioles third base prospect Coby Mayo will be on the bench on Friday when they begin a series against the Los Angeles Angels. The slugging third baseman is currently in the midst of a 3-for-21 skid over his last seven contests. During this stretch, he has struck out six times and hit just one extra-base hit. Since returning to the big leagues on May 30, Mayo has tallied just four total hits, with only one of them going for extra bases. While the No. 17-ranked prospect in the sport has shown immense power upside at Triple-A, he has yet to take the next step in the big leagues. Through 29 total games with the Orioles, the No. 2-ranked prospect in the system has held a .117/.209/.130 slash line. Given his underwhelming play and inconsistent playing time, he should only be rostered in 12+ team formats.

Coby Mayo Returning to Big Leagues

Baltimore Orioles corner infielder Coby Mayo is reportedly headed back to the big leagues. Mayo was scratched ahead of his game in Triple-A on Friday. The 23-year-old is headed back to Baltimore with Ryan Mountcastle (hamstring) heading to the injured list. Mayo is a top prospect in the O's system, but hasn't really been given a fair shot. He played in 17 games with the O's last season and only four games so far this season. Mayo has shown success in the minors and appears ready for a chance at the big league level. The loss of Mountcastle should mean that Mayo gets an everyday chance at first base. He's not a must-have player, but is certainly someone to keep an eye on right now.

Coby Mayo Hits Home Run on Sunday

Baltimore Orioles third base prospect Coby Mayo went 2-for-5 with a home run during Sunday's contest against Triple-A Saint Paul. This was Mayo's third-straight game tallying at least one hit and second-straight game tallying at least two hits. The 23-year-old earned his second call to the majors earlier this season but only saw 12 at-bats during this brief taste. Since returning to the minor leagues, Mayo has been in a slump at the plate, holding a .167/.262/.333. However, his productive play this past weekend should help him break this slump. Before returning to Baltimore, Mayo was holding a .252/.346/.523 line with seven doubles and six long balls during his first 28 games of the Triple-A regular season. Fantasy managers should expect the slugging third baseman to remain in the mix to return to the majors throughout the season.

Coby Mayo Sent Back To Triple-A

The Baltimore Orioles announced that they optioned infield prospect Coby Mayo to Triple-A Norfolk after Thursday's game to make room for the return of outfielder Tyler O'Neill (neck) from the 10-day injured list. Although Mayo played in just four games in his second stint in the big leagues after a disappointing debut performance in 2024, he had just one hit in 12 at-bats with a walk and six strikeouts, and he also didn't endear himself to the coaching staff with his play on defense. In his first 21 big-league games, the team's No. 2-ranked prospect per MLB Pipeline, has gone 5-for-53 (.094) with no homers or RBI, five walks and 28 strikeouts. Mayo will head back to Norfolk for the time being but should rejoin Baltimore sooner than later as he looks to finally break through at the major-league level this year. Fantasy managers in dynasty/keeper leagues are getting frustrated.
