Philadelphia Phillies right-handed pitcher Devin Sweet (triceps) returned to action on Saturday against the Detroit Tigers. The reliever tossed a shutout inning. He allowed just one hit and tallied one punchout. Sweet was battling a triceps injury throughout the week, but seeing him return a few days later suggests the injury was not serious. Fantasy managers should expect the 28-year-old to continue to compete for a low-leverage bullpen role during camp. In 2023, Sweet made his MLB debut but struggled as he posted a 10.38 ERA with a 1.85 WHIP across eight 2/3 innings of work. Last summer, Sweet spent his entire season with the Toledo Mud Hens at the Triple-A level. Across 76 innings, he held a 3.91 ERA with a 1.32 WHIP. If he does make the Opening Day roster, he will not carry much fantasy value as he will not see high-leverage opportunities.
The Athletic's Matt Gelb reports that Philadelphia Phillies right-hander Devin Sweet (triceps) left Tuesday's Grapefruit League game against the Tampa Bay Rays after being hit by a line drive on his right triceps. Sweet recorded just one out in the outing before taking a line drive off the bat of first baseman Yandy Diaz. The Phillies are calling the 28-year-old's injury merely a right-triceps contusion for now, but he could go for more testing. Barring a more serious injury that is discovered in his arm, Sweet should be considered day-to-day in camp. Sweet did not pitch at all in the big leagues in 2024 after making his MLB debut in 2023 with the Seattle Mariners and Athletics, going 1-0 with a 10.38 ERA, 1.85 WHIP, six strikeouts and six walks in 8 2/3 innings over just seven appearances out of the bullpen. He's merely competing for a bullpen spot in Philly in spring training and isn't on the fantasy radar.
Devin Sweet Clears Waivers, Outrighted To Triple-A
Detroit Tigers relief pitcher Devin Sweet has cleared waivers and has been outrighted off the 40-man roster to Triple-A Toledo. Sweet was designated for assignment last week when the Tigers signed infield prospect Colt Keith to a six-year contract extension, meaning they had to place him on their 40-man roster. The 27-year-old has spent time with four organizations over the past four months as he has spent time with the Mariners, A's, Giants, and Tigers organizations. Sweet appeared in seven MLB games between the Mariners and A's last season but struggled to a 10.38 ERA in that time while surrendering four homers and six walks versus six strikeouts in 8 2/3 innings of work. He spent the bulk of the 2023 season at Double-A with Seattle, tossing a stout 1.54 ERA and big-time 28.7% K-BB% across 27 appearances.
The Detroit Tigers have designated pitcher Devin Sweet for assignment. The move was made to create a 40-man roster spot for infield prospect Colt Keith who signed a six-year contract extension with the club before making his MLB debut, likely to come on Opening Day this season. It wasn't a long stay on Detroit's 40-man roster for Sweet who the club claimed off waivers from the San Francisco Giants on Jan. 18. The right-hander struggled to an ugly 10.38 ERA across seven appearances in his big-league debut for the Mariners and A's in 2023 before being claimed off waivers by San Francisco. However, he did post a 2.25 ERA across 36 games in the minors between the three organizations in 2023 and should generate more interest on waivers if the Tigers do not retain him.
Tigers Claim Devin Sweet, Designate Tyler Nevin For Assignment
The Detroit Tigers have claimed right-hander Devin Sweet off waivers from the San Francisco Giants and subsequently designated infielder Tyler Nevin for assignment. Sweet, 27, made his big-league debut with the Mariners and A's in the 2023 season, allowing 10 earned runs on 10 hits and six walks against six strikeouts across just 8 2/3 frames between the two clubs. He spent the bulk of the season at Double-A within the Mariners organization, tossing a stealth 1.54 ERA alongside a massive 28.7% K-BB% in 27 relief outings. Nevin, 26, appeared in 41 games with the Tigers last season but hit just .200 with two home runs and a .622 OPS across 111 plate appearances. He's a lifetime .203 hitter with five homers and a .611 OPS across 313 big-league plate appearances between the Tigers and Baltimore Orioles.
The San Francisco Giants claimed right-hander Devin Sweet off waivers from the Oakland Athletics on Tuesday. Sweet will operate as organizational relief for the Giants and remain in the Pacific Northwest after previously spending time with the A's and Seattle Mariners. The 27-year-old made his big-league debut this past season but appeared in only seven games out of the bullpen for Seattle and Oakland. In 8 2/3 innings, Sweet didn't exactly fare well, allowing 10 earned runs on 10 hits (four home runs given up) while walking six and striking out six. He was much better at Double-A Arkansas in Seattle's system in 2023, posting a 1.54 ERA and 0.91 WHI with five saves and 47 K's in 35 relief innings pitched. Expect Sweet to continue toiling in the minors to at least start the 2024 campaign.
Relief pitcher Devin Sweet has been claimed off waivers by the Oakland Athletics and optioned to Triple-A Las Vegas. The 26-year-old reliever was designated for assignment by Seattle on August 31 to clear a spot on their 40-man roster for Dominic Leone. Sweet appeared in just two games with the M's this season, posting a 9.00 ERA, 1.50 WHIP, and 1:1 K/BB ratio but has been more than solid in the minor leagues. Across two levels (Triple-A and Double-A) this season, he owns a 1.71 ERA, 0.976 WHIP, and 54:11 K/BB Ratio over 42 innings of relief. Oakland will likely call him up to the big leagues down the stretch here to give him an opportunity to showcase his stuff.
