Baltimore Orioles relief pitcher Yennier Cano was called upon to get out of a jam during Sunday's game against the Philadelphia Phillies. The O's were up 8-3 but a walk and two errors loaded up the bases for Philly in the ninth inning. After that, O's manager Brandon Hyde decided to go with Cano to get the final out of the game. The right-hander needed only four pitches as he struck out the only batter he faced. He earned himself his third save of the season, but remains behind Craig Kimbrel in a set-up role.
Milwaukee Brewers top pitching prospect Jacob Misiorowski fired 5 2/3 scoreless innings on Tuesday for Double-A Biloxi giving up just three hits and two walks with eight strikeouts. The 22-year-old made it back-to-back dominant starts for the Shuckers dropping his season ERA to 3.10 with a 1.29 WHIP. He has 73 strikeouts in 58 innings pitched which is what fantasy managers like to see out of their starting pitchers. The strikeout upside and overall polish make Misiorowski one of the top pitching prospects in the minors. If he continues his good run of outings, he could be looking at a promotion to Triple-A shortly. Next season is the most likely timetable for an MLB debut for Misiorowski but he is a name to monitor in redraft leagues if he accelerates that timeline.
Minnesota Twins shortstop prospect Brooks Lee (back) is on a tear since returning to the lineup for Triple-A St. Paul. Lee was 1-for-4 with a homer for the Saints on Tuesday night, bringing his June total to five homers and 16 RBI with a .344 batting average in 15 games at Triple-A this month. The Twins No. 2 prospect is showing that he is back healthy and making a case for a promotion to Minnesota. The 23-year-old is a premium prospect who could be an impact waiver-wire addition upon his call-up. He has a rare 65-grade hit tool with 55-grade power. The sweet-swinging shortstop is doing everything he can to prove he is worthy of his big-league opportunity. Fantasy managers should keep a close watch.
Detroit Tigers infield prospect Max Anderson was 4-for-5 with two homers and four RBI for High-A West Michigan on Tuesday. The Tigers' No. 16 prospect is hitting .258 with seven homers and 39 RBI for West Michigan this season. The 2023 second-round pick of the Tigers out of Nebraska is considered a pure hitter with some power upside. The two-homer display was the latest proof of some of that potential. Anderson has been solid all season in his first taste of High-A and at 22 years old, should continue to advance quickly through the Tigers' system. He could be looking at a promotion by season's end but still could be a couple of years away from any potential big-league impact.
San Diego Padres shortstop prospect Leodalis De Vries was 1-for-3 with a home run for Single-A Lake Elsinore on Tuesday. The Padres' No. 4 prospect is off to a slow start at Single-A so far this season, hitting .197 with one homer and 15 RBI to go with five steals in 36 games. At just 17 years old, De Vries is adjusting to professional ball but the upside is there for one of the top recent international signings. The youngster out of the Dominican Republic is a name to file away in dynasty leagues, but he is a long way off the radar in redraft leagues. The home run on Tuesday, the first of his minor league career, is a good start as he begins to chart his path through the Padres' minor league system.
San Francisco Giants pitching prospect Hayden Birdsong will start for the Giants in his major league debut on Wednesday. The 22-year-old right-hander will draw the Cubs in his first career big league start. He was recently promoted to Triple-A Sacramento after pitching to a 2.05 ERA and 1.12 WHIP at Double-A Richmond. At Sacramento, the Giants' No. 6 prospect was 1-0 with a 5.00 ERA and 1.56 WHIP in two starts. Birdsong has a plus fastball-curveball combo to rely on with an above-average slider to mix in. At 6-foot-4 and 215 pounds, Birdsong has the prototypical presence on the mound. The Giants' pitching rotation has been fighting the injury bug, giving Birdsong a big opportunity. One of the top pitching prospects in the San Francisco system, he is worth a look for pitching desperate fantasy teams.
Los Angeles Dodgers right-hander Evan Phillips tossed a scoreless ninth inning to preserve a 4-3 win over the Chicago White Sox on Tuesday. Phillips struck out one and did not allow a baserunner on the way to converting his 13th save in as many opportunities in 2024. The veteran is putting together another excellent season as the Dodgers' primary closer, posting a 1.59 ERA, 0.97 WHIP, and 25 strikeouts over 22 2/3 innings of work. He is a valuable asset in fantasy in any league that rewards saves or holds.
Los Angeles Dodgers DH Shohei Ohtani had a productive game in his team's 4-3 win over the Chicago White Sox on Tuesday. Ohtani went 2-for-4 with a homer, a walk, two runs, and two RBI to help power his team to the win. The veteran hit a leadoff homer to kick off the scoring in the top of the first, giving him 24 round-trippers on the season. Overall, it has been a fantastic first season with the Dodgers for Ohtani, who is hitting .320 with 63 runs, 60 RBI, and 16 steals across 309 at-bats. He's been especially hot of late as he's hitting .385 with five homers and 13 RBI over his past seven contests.
Minnesota Twins catcher Ryan Jeffers had a big night at the plate in a 5-4 loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks on Tuesday. Jeffers went 1-for-3 with a three-run homer and a walk but it wasn't quite enough in the one-run loss. The veteran catcher's seventh-inning blast tied the game at 4-4. Jeffers is providing nice power numbers for a catcher this season, hitting .236 with 15 doubles, 13 homers, 30 runs, 41 RBI, and two steals across 220 at-bats. He is just one homer shy of tying his previous career-high of 14, a number he reached both in 2021 and 2023.
Arizona Diamondbacks second baseman Ketel Marte turned in a strong performance at the plate in his team's 5-4 win over the Minnesota Twins on Tuesday. Marte went 2-for-4 with a homer and three RBI to help power his team to the win. The veteran infielder kicked off the scoring in the game with a two-run homer off Minnesota starter Joe Ryan in the first inning. He later added an RBI single in the seventh inning, a hit which wound up being the game-winner. Marte is having an excellent season for Arizona, hitting .280 with 16 homers, 51 runs, 46 RBI, and three steals across 300 at-bats. If he stays healthy, Marte has a good shot at breaking his previous career-high in homers of 32, which was set back in 2019.
Los Angeles Angels outfielder Mickey Moniak continued his recent hot stretch in a 7-5 win over the Oakland A's on Tuesday. Moniak went 1-for-2 with a grand slam, a walk, and two runs scored in the win over Oakland. With the Angels trailing 2-1 in the fourth inning, Moniak launched his first career grand slam to put LA in the lead. After a slow start to the season, Moniak is swinging a hot bat of late, hitting .304 with two homers and 12 RBI over his past 15 games. Overall this season he is hitting .197 with four homers, 19 runs, 21 RBI, and four steals across 183 at-bats. While his season-long numbers don't look great, Moniak should be rostered in deeper leagues thanks to his recent strong hitting.
