Houston Astros starting pitcher Hunter Brown was impressive on the mound during Monday's game against the Toronto Blue Jays. The right-hander tossed six scoreless innings while allowing only two hits in the win. He struck out five batters while walking three along the way. Brown has allowed an unbelievable one run over his last five starts. He's having an up-and-down season but has been pitching extremely well as of late.
Seattle Mariners catcher Mitch Garver (wrist) remains out of the team's starting lineup on Wednesday versus the visiting Baltimore Orioles. Cal Raleigh is doing the catching and is batting third, while Jorge Polanco serves as the designated hitter and bats sixth against Orioles right-hander Dean Kremer, who will be making his first start since coming off the injured list. Dylan Moore is at the keystone and is hitting in the nine-hole for the M's. Garver was hit by a pitch on his right wrist on Sunday against the Minnesota Twins and will miss a second straight game as a result. The 33-year-old backstop remains day-to-day. He's hitting a lowly .172 (40-for-232) in 2024 but has also provided fantasy managers in deeper leagues with 10 home runs and 31 RBI in his first year in the Pacific Northwest.
Colorado Rockies shortstop Ezequiel Tovar will get the day off on Wednesday against the visiting Milwaukee Brewers at Coors Field. It's a rare day of rest for Tovar, as this is just his third game off of the 2024 season. The 22-year-old shortstop is having a solid year for himself in his second full season for the Rockies, slashing .276/.304/.459 with 12 home runs, 24 doubles, two triples, 37 RBI, four stolen bases and 42 runs scored in 84 games. But after going 0-for-10 with four strikeouts in the first two games of July, the Rockies have decided to give their young star shortstop a breather. He'll be replaced at the 6 on Wednesday by Aaron Schunk, who will bat ninth in the order against Brewers right-hander Colin Rea. Schunk has only played in three big-league games to this point and is searching for his first hit after his first four plate appearances.
Detroit Tigers outfielder/infielder Matt Vierling (foot) is back in the starting lineup on Wednesday against the hosting Minnesota Twins, playing third base and batting leadoff against Twins rookie right-hander David Festa, who will be making just his second major-league start. Giovanny Urshela will move across the diamond to first base and will bat in the eight-hole. Vierling was held out of the starting lineup in each of the last two games due to soreness in his left foot. The 27-year-old will return to a .250/.285/.437 slash line with a .722 OPS, 10 home runs, 33 RBI and 35 runs scored for the Tigers in 268 at-bats this year. Vierling struggled in the month of June, hitting .188 (19-for-101) with three home runs, four doubles, a triple, five RBI, five walks and 25 strikeouts in 24 games played. He'll be hoping to turn things around in his first game in July on Wednesday.
After initially not being included in Wednesday's starting lineup against the visiting San Diego Padres, shortstop Corey Seager (wrist) has been added and will bat second against Padres right-handed rookie Adam Mazur. Seager was hit by a pitch last Saturday on the left wrist against the Baltimore Orioles and ended up missing the last two games as a result. Josh Smith will slide over to third base with Seager back in action. Now that Seager is back in the lineup, fantasy managers will want to get him back in their starting lineups for Wednesday's action against a rookie pitcher. The two-time World Series MVP enters Wednesday's game against San Diego riding a seven-game hitting streak since June 22 that has seen him go 9-for-27 (.333) with a homer, two doubles, two RBI, a stolen base and three runs scored.
Colorado Rockies starting pitching prospect Chase Dollander threw five shutout innings against the Angels' Single-A Affiliate on Tuesday night. He allowed six hits and one walk, finishing the afternoon with 10 strikeouts. It was the fourth time this year that he's fanned 10 batters in one game. He's been excellent through 13 starts this season, sporting a 2.82 ERA, 1.25 WHIP, and 102:26 K/BB ratio in 67 innings. The Rockies' top prospect (per MLB.com), Dollander is expected to make his MLB debut in 2026.
Baltimore Orioles first baseman Ryan Mountcastle (illness) is back in the starting lineup ahead of Wednesday's game against the Seattle Mariners. The right-handed slugger will make his return to the lineup after missing each of the last two games due to an illness. He'll bat cleanup and serve as the designated hitter on Wednesday. Fantasy managers should make sure to get Mountcastle back in their lineups ahead of first pitch.
Tampa Bay Rays first base prospect Xavier Isaac was one of three players with Single-A Charleston to be selected for the 2024 MLB All-Star Futures Game. Since the start of May, Isaac has been unstoppable, slashing .338/.424/.628 with 13 doubles, nine home runs, 37 RBI, and a 21:44 BB/SO ratio. Though, it's worth noting his struggles against left-handed pitching. In 60 plate appearances, he's slashing just .204/.283/.259 with three doubles and a 6:21 BB/SO, against lefties. Regardless, Isaac is a deserving candidate for the Futures Game. Tampa Bay's No. 3 prospect (per MLB.com), he's expected to make his MLB debut in 2026.
Minnesota Twins infielder Royce Lewis (groin) has been placed on the 10-day injured list on Wednesday. This was expected after Lewis left Tuesday's game due to groin tightness. The sky is the limit for Lewis but he can't seem to stay off the injured list. The Twins said Lewis will be out through the All-Star break and re-evaluated afterwards. In a corresponding move, top prospect Brooks Lee has been recalled. He'll cover third base and bat eighth during his MLB debut on Wednesday. Lee should be rostered in most fantasy formats right now. He's expected to play basically everyday until Lewis returns.
In just 73 games, Los Angeles Dodgers outfield prospect Chris Newell is one stolen base away from a 20/20 season with High-A Great Lakes. Through 318 plate appearances, the 23-year-old lefty is slashing .226/.363/.514 with 52 runs scored, 12 doubles, 20 home runs, 56 RBI, and a 52:104 BB/SO ratio. Based on his stat line, he clearly has an impressive power-speed combination. However, his alarming strikeout rate will likely take some time to refine in the minor leagues. Newell isn't currently one of the Dodgers' top 30 prospects (per MLB.com). But it's hard to imagine that won't change, if he keeps playing at this level.
Milwaukee Brewers relief pitcher Enoli Paredes (forearm) has been placed on the 15-day injured list on Wednesday. This is a tough blow to the Brewers bullpen considering how impressive Paredes has looked this season. He holds a 1.08 ERA, 1.02 WHIP, and 12/8 K/BB ratio across 16 2/3 innings this season. The severity of the issue is unknown, so the Brewers should give an update on his timetable soon. In a corresponding move, right-hander Janson Junk has been recalled to take his spot in the bullpen.
