Gabriel Moreno Returning to Spring Lineup

Arizona Diamondbacks catcher Gabriel Moreno (forearm) is serving as the team's designated hitter and will bat fifth in Thursday's Cactus League game versus the Chicago White Sox. Moreno will return after missing a few spring training games due to tightness in his right forearm, which mostly affected him while throwing the baseball. The 26-year-old starting backstop should be fine for Opening Day next week. He'll be hoping to get some more timing down before the start of the 2026 regular season, as he's gone just 5-for-28 (.179) with a homer, three RBI, one walk, and six strikeouts in nine Cactus League games played. Injuries have been an issue for Moreno in his four years in the big leagues, as he's only played over 100 games once, back in his second year in the league and first with Arizona in 2023. Moreno slashed .285/.353/.433 with a career-high .786 OPS, nine homers, and 40 RBI in 83 games in 2025. Treat Moreno as a low-end No. 1 catcher/high-end No. 2 option in upcoming fantasy drafts.

Diamondbacks Expect Gabriel Moreno to be Ready for Opening Day

Arizona Diamondbacks catcher Gabriel Moreno (forearm) will start throwing next week, and manager Torey Lovullo feels strongly that Moreno will be ready for Opening Day in late March, according to Jose M. Romero of The Arizona Republic. Moreno has been dealing with right-forearm inflammation, but an MRI exam over the weekend ruled out any structural damage. The 26-year-old's arm injury affects him more when he throws than when he hits, too, so fantasy managers shouldn't have to be too worried about his status for the start of the 2026 regular season. Still, it's a reminder that the Venezuelan backstop is more of a No. 2 catcher in fantasy leagues than a starter, as he's played in over 100 games just once in his four MLB seasons. Despite hitting a career-high .285 (79-for-277) in 83 games in 2025, Moreno still didn't reach double-digit home runs and only drove in 40. He missed two months due to a fractured right index finger. The good news is he was hitting well to close out the year.

Gabriel Moreno's Tests Show No Structural Damage

Arizona Diamondbacks catcher Gabriel Moreno's (elbow) medical tests revealed only inflammation and no structural damage, manager Torey Lovullo told Nick Piecoro of The Arizona Republic. Lovullo said that Moreno should be ready for Opening Day. The young had been scratched Friday night with forearm tightness, and while any sort of ailment is concerning, fans and fantasy managers should feel relieved that he doesn't have any structural damage in his elbow. Moreno, 26, has dealt with some durability concerns throughout his young career, but he did post an encouraging .285/.353/.433 slash line with nine home runs, a 9.4% walk rate, a 17.2% strikeout rate, and 117 wRC+ last year. Because he's not a lock to play a full complement of games, he ranks as the #17 catcher in RotoBaller's updated fantasy baseball rankings for 2026.

Gabriel Moreno Scratched on Friday With Forearm Tightness

Arizona Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said that catcher Gabriel Moreno (forearm) was scratched from Friday night's Cactus League lineup with right-forearm tightness, according to Steve Gilbert of MLB.com. It's something that Moreno has been dealing with for a few days. He'll go for imaging on his forearm, at which point we'll have a better idea of the severity of the injury. If the injury is serious enough to keep Moreno out for Opening Day in two weeks, it would open up playing time behind the dish in the desert for both Adrian Del Castillo and James McCann. The 26-year-old Venezuelan backstop has only played in over 100 games once in his three full seasons in the big leagues. Moreno played in 83 games a season ago due to injuries, although he still managed a career-high nine home runs, 40 RBI, and a solid .285 batting average (79-for-277) in 309 plate appearances. Moreno is more of a No. 2 catching target in fantasy drafts because of his durability concerns.

Can Gabriel Moreno Put Together a Fully Healthy Season in 2026?

Throughout his big-league career to this point, Arizona Diamondbacks catcher Gabriel Moreno has had a difficult time staying on the field. Over the past two seasons, groin and finger injuries have limited the 26-year-old to just 660 plate appearances. However, when healthy, Moreno has proven himself to be a productive player. Across 309 plate appearances in 2025, he hit .285/.353/.433 with nine home runs, 40 RBI, 44 runs scored, and two stolen bases. Moreno owns a career batting average of .281 and a career strikeout rate of 16.9%, so he should remain a batting average asset for fantasy managers, particularly relative to his position. Moreno may never threaten 20 home runs, but he did improve his barrel rate to a career-best 7.1% in 2025. Still, Moreno's inability to stay healthy is a major red flag in his fantasy profile. RotoBaller currently ranks Moreno as the number 16 fantasy catcher heading into 2026.

Gabriel Moreno to be Back in Friday's Lineup

Arizona Diamonbacks catcher Gabriel Moreno (finger) is set to be activated from the 60-day injured list and return to the starting lineup for Friday's series opener against the Cincinnati Reds, according to manager Torey Lovullo. "I penciled [Gabriel Moreno] in the lineup for tonight," Lovullo said on MLB Network radio on SiriusXM. The D-backs will be taking on Reds right-hander Zack Littell in the series opener in the desert. The Snakes are ready to bring the 25-year-old backstop back after he caught back-to-back games in the minors for Triple-A Reno on Tuesday and Wednesday of this week. Moreno has been out since mid-June with a fractured finger, but he will return to starting duties behind the plate for Arizona the rest of the way. The Venezuelan will be returning to a .270/.324/.414 slash line with only five home runs, 20 RBI and 29 runs scored in 174 at-bats in 2025.

Gabriel Moreno Nearing Return

Arizona Diamondbacks catcher Gabriel Moreno (finger) is on the verge of returning from the 60-day injured list. He'll catch back-to-back games on Tuesday and Wednesday during his Triple-A rehab assignment, and if all goes well, the Diamondbacks will activate him. The club has gone without the 25-year-old since June 14 as a result of a hairline fracture in his right index finger. Before suffering the injury, Moreno hit .270/.324/.414 with five homers, 20 RBI, and 29 runs scored in 188 plate appearances. James McCann, who signed with the Diamondbacks after Moreno's injury, and Jose Herrera have been doing most of the catching in Moreno's absence.

Gabriel Moreno Will Rehab At Triple-A Reno on Tuesday

Arizona Diamondbacks catcher Gabriel Moreno (finger) will go on a rehab assignment to Triple-A Reno on Tuesday, per manager Torey Lovullo. It looks like Arizona's next homestand is the target for reinforcements and roster decisions, Alex Weiner of ArizonaSports.com reports. Moreno is eligible to return from the 60-day injured list on Aug. 18, and he looks like he'll have a shot to be activated on that date if all goes smoothly on his rehab assignment. On the season, Moreno is slashing .270/.324/.414 with five home runs, 20 RBI, and 29 runs scored in 188 plate appearances. That slash line aligns with his career numbers through his previous three MLB seasons with a slash line of .278/.343/.397. Moreno is known for his contact, hard-hit, and squared-up percentage to go along with his defensive skills, including throwing out runners attempting to steal bases. The power has yet to surface, and he has never hit more than 12 home runs in a season at any level in his eight-year career. Fantasy managers looking for a good contact guy who doesn't strike out much will find just that in Moreno.

Gabriel Moreno Throws Out to 90 Feet, Catches Bullpen Session

Arizona Diamondbacks catcher Gabriel Moreno (finger) threw out to 90 feet and caught right-hander Zac Gallen's bullpen session on Tuesday, Alex Weiner of Arizona Sports reports. Moreno also hit off a tee for the second straight day as he continues working back from a hairline fracture in his right index finger. The 25-year-old hasn't played since June 14, but a CT scan came back clean Monday, paving the way for a potential mid-August return. Moreno hit .270/.324/.414 with five homers, 20 RBI, and 29 runs scored over 188 plate appearances before he went on the IL. James McCann and Jose Herrera have split catching duties for Arizona in Moreno's absence.

Gabriel Moreno Begins Tee Work, Nearing Return to Diamondbacks

Arizona Diamondbacks catcher Gabriel Moreno (hand) has resumed swinging a bat and has started tee work after an August 4 CT scan confirmed his right hand had fully healed. Moreno landed on the injured list on June 19 and was transferred to the 60-day IL on July 18 after suffering a hairline fracture in his right hand from a foul tip on June 6. He is expected to make a return in mid-August. The 25-year-old was slashing a productive .270/.324/.414 with a .738 OPS over 53 games prior to the injury. His return would provide a much-needed boost to a Diamondbacks team losing postseason hopes in the NL West.
