According to Chandler Rome of The Athletic, the Houston Astros have traded infielder Grae Kessinger to the Arizona Diamondbacks in exchange for right-handed pitching prospect Matthew Linskey. Kessinger was removed from the 40-man roster earlier this offseason when the Astros acquired first baseman Christian Walker. Across 49 major leagues during the 2023 and 2024 seasons, Kessinger held a .131/.243/.213 with just two doubles and one home run. He held a strong 12.0% walk rate but an underwhelming .226 xwOBA. However, across 121 career games at the Triple-A level, the Ole Miss product carried a .271/.363/.407 line with 23 doubles and 12 home runs. Kessinger will likely open the campaign at Triple-A Reno given his struggles in the majors.

The Houston Astros activated infielder Grae Kessinger (shoulder) from the 10-day injured list on Friday and optioned infielder Jacob Amaya to Triple-A Sugar Land in a corresponding move. Kessinger spent the minimum time on the injured list with right-shoulder discomfort and will now return to the Astros as infield depth. The 26-year-old played in only seven games (one start) with Houston this year before getting hurt, going hitless in 10 plate appearances with no walks and four strikeouts. The former second-rounder in 2019 out of Mississippi played in his first 26 big-league games in 2023 and hit .200/.289/.325 with a homer and an RBI before joining the 'Stros in the postseason as a bench player. Kessinger shouldn't be rostered outside of very deep AL-only and dynasty/keeper leagues.

The 25-year-old is slashing .284/.400/.443 with six homers, 32 RBI in Triple-A Sugar Land this season. He is a former second round pick of the Astros from the 2019 Amateur Draft. The expectation is that Kessinger will add depth and versatility off the bench. It doesn't sound like he's going to play everyday, so he's unlikely to have much fantasy value right now.
