Jack Perkins the Reliever to Roster in Athletics Bullpen

Athletics right-handed reliever Jack Perkins picked up his third save of the season on April 30 and his fourth save opportunity on May 6. He appears to be the front-runner for the closer role for the Athletics for the time being. It is worth noting that Perkins blew his save opportunity on May 6, and this season, he has converted three of his four save opportunities. The Athletics do not have a true closer on their roster, and given the opportunities Perkins has gotten, he appears to be the guy to own out of this bullpen. Especially in deeper leagues where save opportunities are scarce in a season where a handful of relievers have been inconsistent or injured. Perkins overall has been solid on the season, with a 3.68 ERA (3.42 xERA) and 1.16 WHIP with 19 strikeouts in 14 2/3 innings pitched. Prior to his first blown save against the Phillies on May 6, he had a 2.70 ERA. Fantasy managers in deep leagues struggling to compete for saves should take a look at Perkins based on his opportunities over the past few weeks.

Jack Perkins Blows First Save, in Danger of Losing Top Closer Job?

Athletics relief pitcher Jack Perkins was charged with a blown save on Wednesday night against the Philadelphia Phillies. He allowed four runs (two earned) on two hits and a walk, while picking up two strikeouts in 1 1/3 innings. Perkins came into the game to start the seventh inning and retired the Phillies in order with two strikeouts. Things fell apart on him in the eighth, though, and he left runners on the corners with one out after a costly error by second baseman Jeff McNeil. Those runners came around to score, and Perkins took his first loss of the season. The 26-year-old righty still has a 3.68 ERA and 1.78 FIP with a 30.2% strikeout rate. Even though this was officially a blown save, it came before the ninth inning, which shows the A's are still not using him as a traditional, everyday closer. Perkins remains in the mix for saves along with Hogan Harris and Joel Kuhnel, but it's hard to trust any of them for fantasy with the current uncertainty, making him best left for deeper 12+ team leagues.

Jack Perkins Still the Athletics' Primary Closer?

Athletics relief pitcher Jack Perkins remains in line to earn save opportunities for the organization. Although he hasn't earned a save since April 30, neither has any other pitcher on the A's. The team hasn't found itself in a save situation so far in the month of May. When one of those situations does present itself going forward, we expect Perkins to be the go-to option out of the bullpen. He's well rested at this point, having not pitched since that April 30th save. Through eight games (13.1 innings) this year, he owns a 1.72 FIP with 11.48 K/9, 2.03 BB/9, and three saves. Although he's only inducing ground balls at a 36.4% clip, fantasy managers should be intrigued by the fact that he hasn't surrendered a home run yet. Perkins is up to #36 in RotoBaller's latest relief pitcher rankings for fantasy baseball, and he could climb even higher with more volume.

Jack Perkins a Top Waiver-Wire Target When Looking for Saves

The Athletics' right-hander Jack Perkins appears to be taking over as the team's top closer, with three saves in three save opportunities since April 21. On the season, he is 2-0 with a 2.70 ERA, 1.05 WHIP, and 17 strikeouts in 13 1/3 innings pitched. To go with the strong swing and miss stuff (33.1 percent whiff rate and 30.9 percent strikeout rate), he has an elite walk rate, which sits in the 89th percentile, and a strong fastball that averages 96.0 mph. Coming into the 2026 season, the Athletics' bullpen plans were up in the air, so the fact that Perkins has been in the driver's seat for saves for the past few weeks immediately makes him interesting enough to the point where, in leagues that you are hurting for saves, you should make the investment in him on the waiver wire.

Jack Perkins Tallies Third Save, Emerging as Closer to Roster?

Athletics right-handed reliever Jack Perkins picked up his third save of the season in the team's 6-3 victory over the visiting Kansas City Royals on Thursday, allowing a hit while striking out one in a scoreless inning of work at Sutter Health Park. Harris has become a reliever on the rise for fantasy managers to consider picking up in a closer-by-committee situation that also involves lefty Hogan Harris and right-hander Joel Kuhnel. Mark Leiter Jr. also picked up a save on Wednesday. The 26-year-old Perkins came into Thursday's series finale with a 2-0 record, 2.92 ERA, a 1.05 WHIP, and 16 strikeouts in 12 1/3 innings of work in just his second season in the majors. Perkins could deserve a look off the waiver wire from fantasy managers searching for saves, but he hasn't been used as a traditional closer by any means, with Perkins' first two saves of the year coming in two-inning stints. He's a multi-inning weapon for the A's and gives them options late in games. Right now, Perkins is only rostered in 7% of Yahoo leagues with his stock rising.

Jack Perkins Emerging as Athletics Closer, Waiver-Wire Value Rising

Athletics right-hander Jack Perkins is quickly emerging as the club's preferred ninth-inning option after recording saves in each of his last two appearances. Perkins has been one of the early surprises in the Athletics bullpen, posting a 3.18 ERA and 1.15 WHIP through six outings. Scott Barlow entered the season as the likely favorite for save chances, but he blew his lone opportunity and has shifted into more of a setup role with five holds already. Perkins is in his second major league season and is showing the poise and stuff needed for high-leverage work. His recent usage suggests growing trust from the coaching staff as the Athletics sort out late-game roles. Fantasy managers searching for saves should act quickly, as Perkins is trending toward steady closing opportunities moving forward.

A's Recall Jack Perkins From Triple-A

The Athletics announced on Thursday that they recalled right-hander Jack Perkins from Triple-A Las Vegas and optioned right-hander Michael Kelly to Vegas in a corresponding move. Perkins made his big-league debut with the A's last year and had a 4.19 ERA (4.12 FIP) and 1.16 WHIP with 37 strikeouts and 18 walks in 38 2/3 innings pitched over 12 appearances (four starts). At Vegas to begin the 2026 season, Perkins has been working as more of a long reliever and has allowed four runs with nine strikeouts and seven walks in 7 2/3 frames for the Aviators. He could operate as a swingman for the A's in the first month of the season, and with the A's recently sending Luis Morales to the minors, there's a chance Perkins will make an upcoming start for the team. But because the 26-year-old isn't really stretched out for a normal starter's workload, we wouldn't suggest streaming him anywhere if he's tabbed for a start with the A's in the near future.

Jack Perkins Has No Timetable for Return

Athletics starting pitcher Jack Perkins (shoulder) received a subacromial injection and does not have a timetable for return at this point after being placed on the 15-day injured list Friday due to a strained right shoulder. The 25-year-old righty is one of the organization's top pitching prospects, so the team will likely be cautious bringing him along since they are out of the playoff race at this point. Perkins made four starts for the club in August, going 3-1 with a 5.68 ERA, 4.48 FIP, and 18 strikeouts in 19 innings. He won each of his last three outings, although he gave up multiple runs in each game. Perkins is most likely done making meaningful contributions for fantasy baseball this season, but he's a prospect to monitor for dynasty leagues since he could claim a spot in next year's rotation if his recovery goes well.

Jack Perkins Named Sunday's Starter

Athletics pitcher Jack Perkins will shift into the starting rotation and take the mound against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Sunday. This news comes a few days after Perkins recorded a two-inning save in the absence of Mason Miller. The assumption was that Perkins would get a chance at the closer role. Now, it seems like Perkins could help fill out the starting rotation. Perkins pitched well as a starter during his time in the minor leagues. He holds a 2.75 ERA, 0.91 WHIP, and a 19/7 K/BB ratio across eight appearances this season. There is some deep league value here, but it's unclear how deep Perkins is going to pitch in Sunday's game. The right-hander probably isn't stretched out to throw five or six innings, so his ceiling is going to be limited.

Jack Perkins Could Join Rotation in Second Half

SI.com's Jason Burke suggests that Athletics right-handed pitching prospect Jack Perkins, who is ranked as the team's No. 7 prospect by MLB Pipeline, is a candidate to take right-hander Mitch Spence's No. 5 rotation spot in the second half of the season. Perkins made his MLB debut in relief on June 22 and has mostly piggybacked JP Sears as a relief option out of the bullpen, allowing four earned runs on seven hits while walking three and striking out 11 in 9 2/3 innings. The 25-year-old also picked up his first two career saves. The former fifth-rounder in 2022 had a 2.86 ERA, 1.02 WHIP and 68:20 K:BB in 44 innings (nine starts) for Triple-A Las Vegas, and the A's may want to get a look at him in a starting role in the majors to see what exactly they have for next year. Perkins, who features a fastball, slider/sweeper, cutter and changeup, has shown plenty of swing-and-miss stuff.
