According to Alex Stumpf of MLB.com, second baseman Alika Williams has cleared waivers and been outrighted to Triple-A. The Pirates designated Williams for assignment earlier in the week to make room on the roster for Tim Mayza. Williams logged 37 games in Pittsburgh last season and held a .207/.242/.299 line. He hit four doubles and tallied five RBI. He made his major league debut during the 2023 campaign and held a similar .196/.270/.248 across a 46-game stint. However, the Arizona State product has performed quite well at the Triple-A level. Last summer, the 25-year-old held a solid .311/.284/.396 line across a 41-game stint. In 2023, Williams carried a .305/.384/.531 line through 36 games. Fantasy managers should expect Williams to operate as a depth infielder in the Pirates organization during the 2025 season.
According to Andrew Destin of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Pittsburgh Pirates infielder Alika Williams was designated for assignment. This transaction opened a roster spot for Tim Mayza, who the team officially signed earlier on Monday. Williams made 37 appearances at the MLB level last season with the Pirates. He held a .207/.242/.299 slash line with just five doubles and a 3:22 BB:K ratio. During his rookie season in 2023, Williams posted a .198/.270/.248 line. However, Williams has performed very well at the Triple-A level. Last summer, he carried a solid .311/.384/.396 line. In 2023, he flashed more power upside as he held a .305/.381/.531 line. Fantasy managers should expect the 25-year-old to draw some interest on waivers, given his strong play at Triple-A.
The Pittsburgh Pirates are bringing up middle-infield prospect Alika Williams from the minors on Tuesday. The 37th overall pick in the 2020 draft was acquired from the Tampa Bay Rays in the Robert Stephenson trade, and he had been killing it at Triple-A Indianapolis with a .305 batting average (39-for-128) with seven home runs, eight doubles, 20 RBI, three steals and 25 runs scored in 36 games. The 24-year-old can handle second base or shortstop, and he could see playing time at both middle-infield spots, especially now that Tucupita Marcano (knee) could miss extended time with an injury he suffered on Monday night. Williams is the team's No. 29 prospect, per MLB Pipeline, and could be worth a look in deeper fantasy leagues if he sees enough playing time.
