MassLive.com's Chris Cotillo writes that Boston Red Sox left-hander Jake Bennett has been an early camp standout for the team. The Red Sox want to keep him stretched out this spring, so he won't be a candidate to be in the Opening Day bullpen. "I don't foresee us, outside of strict necessity, wanting to shorten him up anytime soon," pitching coach Andrew Bailey said. The 25-year-old 6-foot-6, 234-pounder is getting an opportunity in big-league camp despite having not pitched above Double-A. Baseball America ranks Bennett as the sixth-best prospect in Boston's system and the fifth-best pitcher. He had Tommy John surgery after the 2023 season and missed all of 2024, but he bounced back nicely last year with a 2.27 ERA, 64 K's, and 19 walks in 75 1/3 innings. For now, Bennett is a name to watch. If he pitches well at Triple-A this year, he could be an option for Boston's rotation or bullpen later in 2026.

The Boston Red Sox acquired left-handed pitching prospect Jake Bennett from the Washington Nationals on Monday in exchange for right-handed pitching prospect Luis Perales, sources told ESPN's Jeff Passan. Bennett, 25, was drafted by the Nats in the 39th round in 2019. The young southpaw pitched for Single-A Fredericksburg, High-A Wilmington, and Double-A Harrisburg in 2025 in his first year back from Tommy John surgery, going a combined 2-5 with a 2.27 ERA, 1.07 WHIP, and 64:19 K:BB ratio in 75 1/3 innings over 19 outings (18 starts). Per MLB Pipeline, Bennett immediately becomes the BoSox's No. 7 prospect. The 6-foot-6, 234-pounder is predominantly a sinker/changeup pitcher who has held impressive ground-ball rates in the minors. Bennett also features a low- to mid-90s heater. Bennett might be another full year away from the big leagues, but his combination of size and stuff gives him decent upside at the major-league level.

Washington Nationals pitching prospect Jake Bennett could be the next pitching prospect from the minors to be in the big leagues next year. With Travis Sykora (elbow) and Jarlin Susana (lat) injured, and Sykora in particular expected to miss 2026 after undergoing Tommy John late in the season, the Nationals may look to Bennett in order to plug a hole in a rotation that had the second-worst ERA in the league this year (5.17). The Nats' 10th-ranked prospect missed all of 2024 recovering from his own Tommy John surgery, but pitched well at three different levels this year, posting a 2.27 ERA, 1.08 WHIP, and a 15.2 percent K-BB% in 18 starts (75 1/3 innings pitched). His 7.65 K/9 rate will have to increase in order to make him more appealing for fantasy, though, so keep an eye on him in 2026 to see if the offseason gave him time to improve that area of his game.
