Joey Wentz To Work As A Reliever In Camp

Detroit Tigers pitcher Joey Wentz will be working as a reliever in spring training rather than stretching out as a starter. It's a big spring for the left-hander as Wentz is out of minor league options, meaning he will either have to crack the club's bullpen out of camp or likely be cut loose from the 40-man roster. Wentz struggled mightily in the 2023 season as he worked to a 6.90 ERA across 25 outings (19 starts) with the Tigers while also tossing a 4.40 ERA across six starts with Triple-A Toledo. He was much better in the 2022 season when he posted a 3.03 ERA in seven starts with the Tigers alongside a 3.17 ERA in 12 outings (11 starts) at the Triple-A level. Once a promising prospect, Wentz's fantasy value is non-existent.

Joey Wentz Recalled, Will Pitch On Saturday

Detroit Tigers starting pitcher Joey Wentz has been recalled from Triple-A Toledo and will pitch in Saturday's game against the Miami Marlins. Wentz is set to work after Tigers opener Beau Brieske starts the game. Wentz has struggled mightily this season with a 6.78 ERA, 1.63 WHIP, and 66:31 K/BB ratio over 71 2/3 innings (16 appearances, 15 starts). There's no fantasy appeal here. Relief pitcher Trey Wingenter has been optioned to Triple-A in a corresponding move.

Joey Wentz To Fill In As Tigers Fifth Starter

Detroit Tigers left-handed pitching prospect Joey Wentz will fill in for the injured Michael Lorenzen as the Tigers fifth starter. The southpaw will face the juggernaut Houston Astros on Tuesday, April 4, at Minute Maid Park. The No. 9-ranked prospect in the Tigers system made his major-league debut late last season, starting in seven games with an ERA of 3.03. However, there is cause for concern, as Wentz did have an xFIP of 4.56 and a SIERA of 4.58. While his 2022 may have been a bit fluky, the 22-year-old didn't perform terribly against the Astros last season, allowing only two runs in four innings pitched. If you need a one-time plug-in starter for the first week of the fantasy season, Wentz should be one of your options on the waiver wire.

Tigers Option Joey Wentz

The Detroit Tigers optioned starting pitcher Joey Wentz on Monday. The 24-year-old made seven starts for Detroit as a rookie this season, logging 32.2 innings and pitching to an encouraging 3.03 ERA and a 3.54 FIP. He also added 27 strikeouts and walked 13 batters. Wentz figures to be part of the Tigers' rotation mix next season alongside the likes of Eduardo Rodriguez, Tarik Skubal, Spencer Turnbull, Matt Manning, and Beau Brieske. The Tigers also recalled right-hander Bryan Garcia from Triple-A on Monday.

Joey Wentz To Start Friday For Tigers

Detroit Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said Monday that starting pitcher Joey Wentz will start on Friday at the Royals and that the team expects him to make several more starts through the rest of the season, per MLB's Adrian Garro. The 24-year-old lefty got called up in May and made two starts, posting a bloated 8.10 ERA in the small sample. However, he has been a solid starter at Triple-A Toledo, going 2-2 with a 3.17 ERA and a 9.87 K/9 rate in 48 1/3 innings pitched. The Royals do present a good matchup, but Wentz's previous couple of starts make him difficult to trust, especially this late in the season.

Joey Wentz Called Up To Start Game 2

Detroit Tigers left-hander Joey Wentz was called up from the minors on Tuesday to serve as the 27th man for the doubleheader against the Minnesota Twins. Wentz will serve as the starting pitcher for Game 2. The 24-year-old southpaw will likely be sent back to Triple-A Toledo after the game. It will be just his second MLB appearance and start after he surrendered six earned runs on seven hits while striking out one and walking two in 2 2/3 innings in his MLB debut against the Oakland Athletics back on May 11. Wentz will be hoping to do better against Minnesota, but fantasy managers shouldn't trust him. In seven starts for Toledo this year, Wentz has a 4.73 ERA and 1.27 WHIP with 34 K's and 12 walks in 26 2/3 innings pitched.

Joey Wentz Will Make His MLB Debut Wednesday

Detroit Tigers left-hander Joey Wentz will make his MLB debut against the Oakland A's on Wednesday. Wentz has made five starts for Triple-A Toledo this season, posting a 4.12 ERA and an eye-popping 11.90 K/9. The 24-year-old hurler is generally regarded as a top-10 prospect in the Detroit farm system, boasting a pedestrian fastball but a plus changeup. Wentz missed all of the 2020 season following Tommy John surgery but was able to make 18 appearances in 2021, split between Single-A and Double-A. Fantasy managers will probably want to take a wait-and-see approach with the youngster when it comes to potentially utilizing him as a streaming option.

Beau Burrows, Joey Wentz Among Tigers Spring Cuts

Detroit Tigers pitching prospects Alex Faedo (team's No. 10 prospect), Joey Wentz (No. 9), Beau Burrows (No. 15) and Kyle Funkhouser were optioned to Triple-A Toledo on Friday, while catcher Dillon Dingler (No. 8), pitcher Zack Hess (No. 30), Gerson Moreno, Daniel Pinero, Jacob Robson, Aderlin Rodriguez and Danny Woodrow were reassigned to minicamp. Faedo is out for the year while rehabbing Tommy John surgery. Wentz had the same surgery a year ago and is expected to return to minor league games this summer. Burrows and Funkhouser were the only ones with a real chance to win roster spots. Burrows, the Tigers top pick in 2015, threw 1 1/3 perfect innings on March 1 against the Yankees. Burrows and Funkhouser will be part of the alternate training site when the season opens with the Triple-A season being delayed by a month.

Joey Wentz Undergoes Tommy John Surgery

Detroit Tigers starting pitcher Joey Wentz(elbow) underwent Tommy John surgery on Tuesday in West Palm Beach, Florida. His expected timetable to return is 14-16 months. Wentz has been battling with forearm soreness for the past month. Still, this news comes as a big surprise. The Tigers acquired Wentz from the Atlanta Braves in a trade last July. Wentz was drafted 40th overall in 2016. In five starts at Detroit's Double-A level, he went 2-0 with a 2.10 ERA. Due to his injury, Wentz is only rosterable in deep dynasty leagues this season.

Joey Wentz To Be Shut Down For 10 Days

Detroit Tigers general manager Al Avila said that an MRI exam on pitcher Joey Wentz (forearm) showed no structural damage to his arm, but he'll be shut down for around 10 days. The 22-year-old left-hander was traded from the Braves last season. He was much better for Double-A Erie in five starts to finish the year, posting a 2.10 ERA and 0.94 WHIP with a 13.0 K/9. Ranked as the team's No. 10 prospect to close out 2019, Wentz could be a mid-rotation starter for the Tigers by in a year or two because of his size and feel for pitching. For now, he's just one to watch in dynasty/keeper leagues.
