Phillies Exercise Jose Alvarado's 2026 Option

The Philadelphia Phillies announced on Wednesday that they exercised the $9.5 million club option on left-handed reliever Jose Alvarado (forearm) for the 2026 season. Alvarado will be back with the Phillies next season despite ending the season on the 15-day injured list with a left-forearm strain. The 30-year-old veteran southpaw had a 2025 campaign to forget after being suspended for the first 80 games due to a performance-enhancing drug violation. The Venezuelan reliever appeared in 28 games out of the bullpen and managed to save seven games while producing a 3.81 ERA (3.60 FIP) and 1.31 WHIP with 32 strikeouts and only seven walks in 26 innings pitched. Barring a setback, Alvarado should be ready for the start of spring training in February and should be an important piece at the back end of Philadelphia's bullpen.

Jose Alvarado Expected to be Back With Phillies Next Year

Philadelphia Phillies president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski said on Thursday that he'd be "surprised" if left-handed reliever Jose Alvarado (forearm) isn't back with the team in 2026, according to Matt Gelb of The Athletic. The Phillies hold a $9.5 million club option on Alvarado for next season and are likely to pick it up, despite the fact that he missed time late in the year with a forearm injury and also served an 80-game suspension for performance-enhancing drugs. The 30-year-old southpaw only appeared in 28 games for the Phillies in relief in 2025 as a result, posting a 3.81 ERA and 1.31 WHIP with 32 strikeouts and seven walks in 26 innings pitched. He also saved seven games in his ninth year in the big leagues and fifth in Philly. It sounds as though Alvarado's forearm injury shouldn't be an issue as it pertains to him being ready for the start of next year.

Phillies Putting Jose Alvarado on Injured List With Forearm Strain

The Philadelphia Phillies are placing left-handed reliever Jose Alvarado (forearm) on the 15-day injured list (retroactive to Sept. 11) on Friday with a left-forearm strain and are adding right-hander Walker Buehler to the active roster in a corresponding move, according to Matt Gelb of The Athletic. Alvarado has only appeared in 28 games out of the bullpen for the Phillies this year after serving a lengthy suspension, and now he'll miss at least the next two weeks with an injury. The 30-year-old veteran southpaw may not be able to make it back until the postseason in October. In his 26 innings of relief in his fifth year in Philly, he has a 3.81 ERA (3.60 FIP) and 1.31 WHIP with seven saves, 32 strikeouts, and seven walks. The Phillies still have a formidable bullpen, but they'll rely on lefty Matt Strahm more against lefties in a high-leverage role now.

Jose Alvarado Returns From his Suspension

The Philadelphia Phillies announced on Tuesday that they reinstated left-handed reliever Jose Alvarado from the restricted list and optioned right-hander Nolan Hoffman to Triple-A Lehigh Valley in a corresponding move. Left-hander Josh Walker was also designated for assignment. Alvarado will return to the big leagues for the first time since mid-May after it was announced that he was handed an 80-game suspension by MLB for testing positive for a performance-enhancing drug. The 30-year-old veteran southpaw will return to the Phillies without as much fantasy appeal now that right-hander Jhoan Duran is the team's unquestioned closer. Alvarado should remain fantasy relevant in holds leagues, though, and the Venezuelan had a nice 2.70 ERA, 1.20 WHIP, 25 strikeouts and seven saves in his 20 innings at the time of his suspension.

Jose Alvarado Beginning Rehab Assignment on Thursday

Philadelphia Phillies relief pitcher Jose Alvarado is scheduled to begin a minor league rehab assignment with Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Thursday. Alvarado has been out since the middle of May due to an 80-game suspension for breaking the performance-enhancing substance policy. He's currently eligible to return on August 19, so he'll begin ramping up in the minor leagues. Alvarado has a 2.70 ERA, 1.20 WHIP, and a 25/4 K/BB ratio with seven saves in 20 appearances with the Phillies this season. He was splitting up the closing duties with Jordan Romano before getting suspended. Now, Alvarado is basically useless in fantasy formats with the Phillies adding Jhoan Duran at the trade deadline. Fantasy managers shouldn't bother adding Alvarado.

Jose Alvarado Suspended for 80 Games

Philadelphia Phillies relief pitcher Jose Alvarado has been suspended for 80 games. The left-hander has tested positive for a performance-enhancing substance. According to Todd Zolecki of MLB.com, this suspension is effective immediately. Through the early part of the campaign, the left-hander has been a very effective option in the Philadelphia bullpen, holding a 2.70 ERA with a 1.20 WHIP. He has struck out 25 batters across 20 innings and tallied seven saves. The 29-year-old has generated a strong 2.77 xERA (86th percentile) and a 47.3% ground-ball rate (71st percentile). He has also shown a strong command of his pitches, tallying strikeouts at an elite 29.8% rate and serving walks at a 4.8% rate. While Alvarado is sidelined, fantasy managers should expect Jordan Romano to see most of the save opportunities in Philadelphia.

Jose Alvarado Tallies Fourth Save

Philadelphia Phillies left-handed pitcher Jose Alvarado earned his fourth save of the campaign on Thursday afternoon during their victory over the San Francisco Giants. Alvarado entered the game in the ninth inning but ran into some trouble. After retiring Casey Schmitt via a lineout, he would allow a solo shot to Tyler Fitzgerald. He would then allow a single to outfielder Jung Hoo Lee. However, the southpaw was able to hold the lead to seal the victory. Through his first nine 1/3 innings of work this season, the 29-year-old has held a 2.89 ERA with a 1.39 WHIP. He has tallied 14 punchouts and generated an elite 2.15 xERA, which suggests he should see positive regression during the summer. Alvarado has emerged as the primary ninth-inning option in Philadelphia and remains a must-start option in all leagues.

Jose Alvarado Continues To Impress In Closer Role

Philadelphia Phillies reliever Jose Alvarado picked up his third save of the season on Saturday, shutting down the St. Louis Cardinals to secure a 4-1 win. Alvarado struck out one in a perfect ninth inning. With Jordan Romano struggling early in the season and losing the closer role, Alvarado appears to finally be getting a crack at it. So far, he is making the most of it, pitching to a 1.23 ERA and 1.09 WHIP. Alvarado should be rostered in any leagues where saves matter at this point.

Jose Alvarado Earns The Save On Thursday

Philadelphia Phillies left-hander Jose Alvarado earned his first save of the season on Thursday against the Colorado Rockies. It certainly wasn't pretty, as it required him to throw 35 pitches in the ninth inning with a 3-0 lead, as he allowed one run on three hits while striking out three. On the bright side, Alvarado was called on for the save over Jordan Romano, who pitched the eighth inning in Thursday's contest. Not to suggest Alvarado has taken over duties as the closer for the Phillies, but seeing him get the opportunity was good for Alvarado fantasy managers. Up next for the Phillies is a weekend series against the mighty Los Angeles Dodgers, followed by a series with the Atlanta Braves. Keep an eye on the Phillies closer situation as the weeks go on.

Jose Alvarado Earns Ninth Save Of Season Tuesday

Philadelphia Phillies relief pitcher Jose Alvarado picked up his ninth save of the season in Tuesday's 5-2 win over the Rangers. Alvarado came in to pitch the top of the ninth inning up by three. He got the first out on a ground-out, had a runner reach on a throwing error and allowed a single, and ended the game with back-to-back strikeouts. The 29-year-old has pitched well overall this season, converting all of his save opportunities with a 3.54 ERA, an 8.85 K/9 rate, and a 3.10 BB/9 rate in 22 appearances. However, Jeff Hoffman, who pitched in the eighth inning of this game, has also pitched well and has converted three of six save opportunities. Alvarado appears to have more fantasy value of the two, but his overall value may remain in the mid-tier if Hoffman continues to see somewhat frequent save chances.
