Korey Lee News
The Chicago White Sox recalled catching prospect Korey Lee from Triple-A Charlotte and optioned catcher Carlos Perez to Charlotte in a corresponding move on Thursday before their series opener against the Oakland Athletics. Lee, the team's No. 18 prospect per MLB Pipeline, came over from the Houston Astros in the deal that sent reliever Kendall Graveman to Houston. The 25-year-old backstop has seen his power stroke diminish in the minors this year, as he's hit only five long balls in 82 games at Triple-A Sugar Land and Charlotte after clubbing 25 home runs for Sugar Land in 2022. However, he's also hit .278 (93-for-334) this year and has added 13 stolen bases. Lee could become attractive in two-catcher leagues the rest of the way with semi-regular playing time for the out-of-contention White Sox.
The Chicago White Sox acquired catching prospect Korey Lee (oblique) from the Houston Astros on Friday in exchange for right-handed reliever Kendall Graveman, according to a source. Lee was ranked by MLB Pipeline as Houston's No. 5 prospect before the trade. The 25-year-old backstop is currently recovering from a strained oblique and has been on the injured list in the minors since early July, but he'll join Triple-A Charlotte when he's fully healthy. Lee struggled with the bat on the farm in 2022 but was hitting a solid .283/.328/.406 with five home runs and 12 stolen bases in 68 games for Triple-A Sugar Land before suffering his oblique injury. Lee is a power over average hitter and is still developing defensively behind the dish after becoming a full-time catcher in 2019.
Houston Astros prospect Korey Lee went 3-for-4 with a triple and a home run on Tuesday. The 22-year-old catcher was playing in just his seventh game at Double-A after his recent promotion from High-A. Selected 32nd overall in the 2019 amateur draft, Lee opened the 2021 season by hitting .330 with a 141 wRC+ in 29 games in A-ball. Since his promotion to Double-A, he's hitting .333. Four of his nine hits have gone for extra bases including three home runs. Lee has the makings of an above-average offensive catcher at the MLB level. His strong performance in 2021 has pushed his MLB timetable up to 2022 and the big league club has just three weak-hitting catchers on the 40-man roster.
