Luis Castillo Could be Bumped From Starting Rotation

Seattle Mariners starting pitcher Luis Castillo could end up as the odd man out in the starting rotation. Fellow starter Bryce Miller (oblique) is set to return from the Injured List next week. The Mariners will need to make a big decision with their rotation once Miller is back in the mix. They could roll with a six-man rotation; if not, Castillo or Emerson Hancock would likely be shifted to a bullpen role for now. Castillo has never pitched out of the bullpen, with all 250 of his big league appearances coming as starts. However, he has been unusable in the rotation this season. Castillo owns a 6.29 ERA, 1.66 WHIP, and a 31:13 K:BB ratio through seven starts. Hancock has been the much more effective starter and has earned the right to remain in the rotation. A short stint in the bullpen might be good for Castillo to hopefully turn around his season.

Luis Castillo, Emerson Hancock in Danger of Moving to Bullpen?

With Seattle Mariners right-hander Bryce Miller (oblique) on the verge of being reinstated from the 15-day injured list to make his 2026 season debut at some point next week, one of right-handers Luis Castillo or Emerson Hancock, could be in danger of being bumped from the starting rotation to the bullpen, according to Adam Jude of The Seattle Times. The Mariners could also elect to go with a six-man rotation for the time being. Jude writes that one thing is certain: Hancock has cemented a place on the major-league roster. He's been one of the best starters in the American League so far this year, posting a team-best 2.59 ERA and 46:6 K:BB in 41 2/3 innings pitched. Another possibility is that Castillo is paired with Miller in a piggyback role. The 33-year-old Castillo is most in danger of a demotion to a relief role after starting 2026 0-3 with an ugly 6.29 ERA in seven starts. It's easier said than done, though, as he's never pitched out of the bullpen and is a respected leader in the clubhouse. Castillo is also still owed $24 million next year with a vesting option for the 2028 season.

Luis Castillo Set to Start Fifth Game of the Season

Seattle Mariners right-hander Luis Castillo will make his first start of the 2026 season in the team's fifth game on Monday, March 30, against the New York Yankees at T-Mobile Park, according to Adam Jude of The Seattle Times. Fantasy managers shouldn't read anything into the fact that Castillo will start the fifth game of the regular season after he pitched in the team's Cactus League finale on Monday. The 33-year-old veteran will have a difficult matchup to kick things off, though, after struggling in spring training. Castillo allowed 14 runs (13 earned) on 23 hits (five home runs) while walking four and striking out 13 in 15 innings pitched over five starts. Spring statistics should always be taken with a grain of salt. Castillo has had ERAs under 4.00 in three straight seasons and has also made at least 30 starts for fantasy managers over that span. He's no ace, but Castillo's fantasy floor is pretty high, especially when starting at pitcher-friendly T-Mobile Park.

Luis Castillo May Be Showing Signs of Decline Heading into 2026

Seattle Mariners starting pitcher Luis Castillo has long been one of MLB's most durable and reliable right-handers. The 33-year-old started to show some signs of decline in 2025, but still posted solid numbers overall. Across 180 2/3 innings (32 starts), Castillo posted an 11-8 record with a 3.54 ERA, 1.18 WHIP, and 162 strikeouts. Castillo's 21.7% strikeout rate was by far the lowest of his career, and he also allowed the highest barrel (10.4%) and hard-hit (46.4%) of his nine-year MLB tenure. Castillo has the benefit of making his home starts in one of the game's most pitcher-friendly environments in Seattle. In 2025, he posted a 2.60 ERA and 0.97 WHIP across 100 1/3 innings at home compared to a 4.71 ERA and 1.46 WHIP in 80 1/3 innings on the road. Castillo's days of being a high-end fantasy starting pitcher are likely behind him, but he's still a savvy veteran who should be usable in all of his home starts. He checks in as RotoBaller's SP49 heading into 2026.

Luis Castillo to Start Game 2

Seattle Mariners starting pitcher Luis Castillo will draw the start for Sunday's Game 2 of the ALDS against the Detroit Tigers. The Mariners are in need of a big win here after dropping the opener. It won't be easy versus left-hander Tarik Skubal, but Castillo has looked solid lately. Castillo posted a 2.45 ERA in the month of September. The right-hander gave up three earned runs over his last four starts during the regular season. This is looking like a potential pitcher's duel between two aces on Sunday.

Luis Castillo Keeps the Pirates Scoreless in Seattle

Seattle Mariners starting pitcher Luis Castillo spun seven shutout innings against the Pirates on Saturday night, allowing only two hits and no walks while picking up eight strikeouts. He didn't get much run support but made it stand up in the 1-0 victory. Castillo earned the win to improve to 5-5 on the season with a 3.31 ERA, 3.90 FIP, and 1.22 WHIP. He has allowed three runs or fewer in four of his last five starts, with 27 strikeouts in 30 innings and four quality starts. He doesn't have the elite strikeout numbers from his prime, but he still can deliver strong outings in favorable matchups like this one, especially when he's working at pitcher-friendly T-Mobile Park. He'll get one more start before the All-Star break in a much tougher matchup on Friday night in Detroit.

Luis Castillo Throws Six Shutout Frames On Saturday

Seattle Mariners starting pitcher Luis Castillo (3-2) dominated the Miami Marlins on Saturday, tossing six scoreless innings in a 14-0 win. Castillo allowed just one hit and two walks while punching out five. The 32-year-old was coming off two outings where he allowed 23 baserunners in just 9 IP, so a start like this one was sorely needed. He improves to (3-2) with a 3.62 ERA, 1.39 WHIP, and 28 strikeouts in 32 IP. Fantasy managers will hope he can build off this start next Saturday when he is projected to face the Texas Rangers on the road.

Luis Castillo Finally Beats The Tigers On Wednesday

Seattle Mariners right-hander Luis Castillo was finally able to beat the Detroit Tigers for the first time in his career on Wednesday in the team's 3-2 win at T-Mobile Park while also picking up his first win of the 2025 campaign. The 32-year-old veteran allowed two earned runs on five hits (one homer) while walking two and striking out five in seven innings of work. One of the two runs he allowed on the day came on a solo home run to infielder Trey Sweeney. Castillo lost his first outing of the year against the division-rival A's last week, but he gave up just two runs while striking out four in five innings. While he displayed a drop in strikeout rate in 2024 and may no longer be a fantasy ace, his first two outings of 2025 remind us that he's still fantasy relevant in all formats. Castillo is lined up to make his third start of the year next week against the Houston Astros.

Luis Castillo Throws Bullpen On Monday

Seattle Mariners right-hander Luis Castillo (hamstring) was seen throwing a bullpen session at spring training on Monday. Castillo should be full-go in spring training this year despite ending the 2024 season on the injured list due to a Grade 2 left-hamstring strain, which was suffered on Sept. 8. The 32-year-old veteran hurler was mentioned in offseason trade rumors as the Mariners searched for more offense, but he's still around and should open the 2025 season at the top of the starting rotation. In his second full season in Seattle in 2024, the three-time All-Star went 11-12 with a 3.64 ERA (3.91 FIP), 1.17 WHIP and 175:47 K:BB in 175 1/3 innings over his 30 starts. Castillo is still a decent No. 2/3 fantasy starter, but his decline in strikeout rate and decline in his signature changeup are a bit worrying. The days of Castillo being considered a fantasy ace are over.

Baltimore, Seattle Having Trade Discussions Around Luis Castillo

According to Jon Morosi of the MLB Network, the Seattle Mariners and Baltimore Orioles have had trade discussions around starting pitcher Luis Castillo. Morosi noted that both teams have had discussions over the recent days and a potential trade would work since the Orioles would be able to take on a majority of Castillo's contract. In addition, the Mariners have been shopping Castillo throughout the offseason in hopes to move his contract to either acquire a top prospect or open up salary to sign one of the current free agents. Morosi noted that a top prospect would likely go back to Seattle in this deal which could allow them to target one of the top remaining free agents such as Pete Alonso. The Mariners have a lot depth at starting pitcher and could move Castillo to either continue to bolster their deep pipeline or use that money to sign a top bat. Alonso would be a great fit especially as the Mariners do not have a high-upside option at first base. In the deal, Baltimore may have to part ways with one their top prospects such as Heston Kjerstad or Coby Mayo. Both have had struggles finding consistent playing time in a deep Baltimore lineup and would benefit well in a full-time role in Seattle. Castillo would be a much-needed addition for Baltimore as they recently lost Corbin Burnes in free agency to the Arizona Diamondbacks.
