Miguel Amaya to Start Rehab Assignment on Tuesday

Chicago Cubs catcher Miguel Amaya (ankle) is not back to 100 percent, but MLB.com reports he will start at designated hitter for Triple-A Iowa on Tuesday. Manager Craig Counsell is hopeful that Amaya will be able to catch in rehab games later in the week. The 26-year-old backstop landed on the 10-day injured list on Aug. 14 with a left-ankle sprain, but barring a setback on his rehab assignment, he should be able to rejoin the Cubs before the end of September. Amaya suffered an ankle injury in his first game back from the IL since late May due to a strained left oblique, so it's been an injury-plagued year for him, to say the least. When he returns, he'll give the Cubbies another option behind starter Carson Kelly at catcher for the end of the regular season and in the playoffs. Amaya has played in only 28 games this year and has gone 27-for-96 (.281) with four homers and 25 RBI.

Miguel Amaya "Still Weeks Away" From Returning

Chicago Cubs catcher Miguel Amaya (ankle) has been running on a treadmill as he recovers from a left-ankle sprain, but he's "still weeks away" from a return, according to manager Craig Counsell. Amaya suffered the injury in a win over the Toronto Blue Jays on Aug. 13 and immediately went on the 10-day IL. It looked worse than a sprained ankle at the time, as Amaya had to be carted off the field after stepping on first base awkwardly on an infield single. Adding insult to injury, it happened in Amaya's first game back after he missed two and a half months with an oblique strain. The 26-year-old has played just 28 games this season and hit .281/.314/.500 with four home runs and 25 RBI in 96 plate appearances. As long as he's out, the Cubs will continue with Carson Kelly and Reese McGuire as their tandem behind the plate.

Miguel Amaya Going on 10-Day Injured List With Sprained Ankle

Chicago Cubs catcher Miguel Amaya (ankle) sprained his left ankle on Wednesday and will head to the 10-day injured list, manager Craig Counsell told reporters. Amaya suffered the injury when he stepped on first base awkwardly on an infield single in the eighth inning of the Cubs' 4-1 win over the Toronto Blue Jays. He had to be carted off the field with what looked like a catastrophic injury, but X-rays came back negative. It's unclear how long the Cubs will go without Amaya, who just returned on Wednesday after missing over two months with a strained left oblique. The 26-year-old has appeared in just 28 games this season and hit .281/.314/.500 with four homers, 25 RBI, and 14 runs scored in 103 plate appearances. Carson Kelly and Reese McGuire will handle the catching duties in Amaya's absence.

Miguel Amaya Carted Off Field on Wednesday

Chicago Cubs catcher Miguel Amaya (leg) had to be carted off the field on Wednesday after suffering an apparent leg injury against the Toronto Blue Jays. Amaya went down with the injury when he stepped on first base awkwardly on an infield single in the top of the eighth inning. The Cubs replaced him with Reese McGuire. It's an awful development for Amaya, who came back from the injured list on Wednesday after missing around two and a half months with a strained left oblique. Amaya had been out since May 25 and looks likely to end up right back on the IL. The 26-year-old went 1-for-3 on Wednesday and has hit a solid .280/.314/.500 with four homers, 25 RBI, and 14 runs scored in 103 plate appearances this season.

Miguel Amaya Activated From Injured List

The Chicago Cubs activated catcher Miguel Amaya (oblique) from the 60-day injured list on Tuesday and designated utility player Jon Berti for assignment in a corresponding move, per the Chicago Sun-Times' Maddie Lee. The Cubs have not released their lineup for Tuesday's game at the Toronto Blue Jays, so it's unclear if Amaya will be in the starting lineup in his first day back in the big leagues. The 26-year-old backstop has been sidelined since May 25 with a strained left oblique. It's definitely a boost for the struggling Cubbies, but Amaya isn't going to have much fantasy value in single-catcher leagues, as he's expected to be the No. 2 to Carson Kelly behind the dish in Chicago. It wasn't like Amaya was slumping at the plate before his injury, though, as he slashed .280/.313/.505 with four long balls, 25 RBI and 14 runs scored in an even 100 plate appearances.

Miguel Amaya Expected to Return Next Week

Chicago Cubs manager Craig Counsell said the expectation is that catcher Miguel Amaya (oblique) will come off the 60-day injured list next week to rejoin the team during a series in Toronto against the Blue Jays. Amaya has been out since May 25 with a strained left oblique, but he's nearing his return to the big-league roster and should split playing time behind the dish with Carson Kelly when he's back. In six games on his minor-league rehab assignment with Triple-A Iowa, the 26-year-old backstop has gone 5-for-16 and no extra-base hits. Amaya was hitting a strong .280/.313/.505 with an .819 OPS, four homers and 25 RBI in 93 at-bats before his injury, but Kelly has 13 long balls in 75 games and should remain the No. 1 catcher in Chicago. It means that Amaya will only be relevant in two-catcher fantasy leagues upon his return.

Miguel Amaya Moved to 60-Day Injured List

Chicago Cubs catcher Miguel Amaya (oblique) has been transferred to the 60-day injured list on Thursday. This is just a procedural move to free up a spot on the 40-man roster for newly acquired Willi Castro. Amaya has been sidelined since late May due to an oblique issue. That being said, Amaya has already missed more than 60 days, so this move doesn't change his timetable. Amaya is already on a rehab assignment, so hopefully he'll be able to return in the coming weeks.

Miguel Amaya Expected to Begin Rehab Assignment on Thursday

Chicago Cubs catcher Miguel Amaya (oblique) has been taking live at-bats and catching bullpen sessions and is expected to start a minor-league rehab assignment on Thursday, according to MLB.com. Manager Craig Counsell said previously that Amaya will need a week's worth of rehab games before he's activated from the 10-day injured list. Amaya has been out since May 25 with a left-oblique strain, but barring a setback on his rehab assignment, he could rejoin the big-league roster in late July. The 26-year-old backstop was hitting a strong .280 (26-for-93) with four home runs, 25 RBI and 14 runs scored at the time of his injury, but when he returns to Chicago, he's expected to operate as the backup to Carson Kelly. Kelly is in the midst of a career year, going into Monday's game slashing .267/.368/.505 with 12 homers and 33 RBI in 64 games.

Miguel Amaya Likely to Start Rehab Assignment After All-Star Break

Chicago Cubs catcher Miguel Amaya (oblique) will likely start a minor-league rehab assignment after this week's All-Star break. Amaya will initially begin playing in rehab games in the rookie-level Arizona Complex League. Manager Craig Counsell said that Amaya will need a week's worth of games before being activated from the 10-day injured list, potentially before the calendar flips to August. The 26-year-old has been working his way back from a strained left oblique that has kept him out since May 25. Amaya has been taking batting practice and catching bullpen sessions, but he should start playing in games on the farm this weekend and into next week. When Amaya does return, he'll be sharing playing time behind the plate with Carson Kelly, who is having a very strong year. Amaya himself was hitting a strong .280 (26-for-93) with four homers, 25 RBI and 14 runs before his injury.

Miguel Amaya Not Close to Game Action

Chicago Cubs catcher Miguel Amaya (oblique) has resumed normal batting practice, catching bullpen sessions and throwing but is "not close" to game action yet, according to manager Craig Counsell. Amaya is recovering from a strained left oblique and will not come off the 10-day injured list before the All-Star break. However, if the 26-year-old continues to make progress and is able to go on a minor-league rehab assignment sooner than later, he could be ready to rejoin the Cubs as their primary backstop early in the second half of the season, which begins on July 18. In the meantime, Carson Kelly will draw the majority of starts behind the plate in Chicago. Kelly is having a fine first season on the North Side, hitting .267 (46-for-172) with nine homers and 29 RBI. He enters Wednesday's action riding a modest four-game hitting streak in which he's gone 6-for-13 with three doubles, three RBI and two runs scored.
