Mike Burrows Being Skipped in Astros Rotation

The Houston Astros are going with pitchers Tatsuya Imai, Spencer Arrighetti, and Kai-Wei Teng for their upcoming three-game series against the Cleveland Guardians this weekend, which means they will skip right-hander Mike Burrows, according to Brian McTaggart of MLB.com. Burrows will be skipped in the rotation for the time being, but with right-hander Cristian Javier (shoulder) potentially returning to the big-league roster soon, the 26-year-old could be moved to a relief role entirely after his struggles in 2026. The former 11th-rounder by the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2018 has gone 3-8 this year with a bloated 5.86 ERA (5.69 FIP) and 1.58 WHIP with 65 strikeouts and 30 walks in 78 1/3 frames across his 14 starts in his first season with the Astros (third total in the majors). Burrows leads the league in hits allowed (94) and earned runs (51) as well. He's really fallen apart in his last six starts, allowing 29 runs (26 earned) on 42 hits (10 homers) while walking 16 and striking out 23 in 33 2/3 innings pitched. Burrows has quickly lost most of what little fantasy value he had, and he's now rostered in only 12% of Yahoo leagues.

Is Mike Burrows Still Worth Targeting on the Waiver Wire in Deeper Leagues?

Houston Astros starting pitcher Mike Burrows had a rough outing in his most recent appearance on Thursday against the Seattle Mariners, allowing eight hits and seven earned runs across 5 2/3 innings of work. The 26-year-old's overall line in his first season in Houston isn't pretty either, as he's recorded a 2-5 record with a 5.72 ERA, 1.53 WHIP, and 46 strikeouts across 50 1/3 innings (nine starts). However, Burrows looked like he might be figuring some things out before his most recent hiccup. Across three starts leading into the Seattle game, Burrows allowed just five earned runs while striking out 17 across 18 innings. The right-hander's 3.92 xERA suggests he has run into some bad luck so far this season after he recorded a 3.94 ERA and 1.24 WHIP across 96 1/3 innings with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2025. In deeper leagues, Burrows could have buy-low appeal on the waiver wire ahead of his next scheduled start on Wednesday in Minnesota against the Twins.

Mike Burrows in Line to Start Astros' Second Game of the 2026 Regular Season

Houston Astros starting pitcher Mike Burrows suffered an injury scare late in the spring after taking a ground ball off his left calf. However, Burrows appears to have avoided missed time, as Matt Kawahara of the Houston Chronicle reports that Burrows is in line to start the Astros' second game of the 2026 regular season on Friday against the Los Angeles Angels. Houston acquired Burrows from the Pittsburgh Pirates over the winter after the 26-year-old recorded a 2-4 record with a 3.94 ERA and 1.24 WHIP with 97 strikeouts across 96 innings (19 starts) in 2025. The right-hander pitched well across 18 innings for Houston this spring, recording a 1.50 ERA and 1.06 WHIP with a 23.9% strikeout rate. Burrows may not have prodigious upside, but he should be locked into a rotation spot in Houston. He could be a slightly overlooked source of steady ratios and solid strikeout numbers for fantasy managers in 2026.

Mike Burrows Avoids Injury, Clear to Begin Season

Houston Astros starting pitcher Mike Burrows (calf) exited Saturday's Grapefruit League contest after a ground ball deflected off his lower left leg. Burrows told Chandler Rome of The Athletic that the ball hit his left calf, and he will be fine. It sounds like Burrows exited the game as a precaution, and the decision was made easier by the fact that he had already thrown 77 pitches. The right-hander remains in line to break camp as a key piece of the Astros' starting rotation. He is currently projected as the club's No. 4 starter, putting him on track to make his season debut Sunday, March 29, against the Los Angeles Angels. Burrows is coming off a solid 2025 campaign in which he went 2-4 with a 3.86 xFIP, 9.09 K/9, and 2.91 BB/9 across 23 outings (19 starts).

Mike Burrows Looking Unhittable in Spring Training

Houston Astros right-hander Mike Burrows has been nearly unhittable in Grapefruit League action in spring training, throwing 12 2/3 scoreless innings in four outings. Burrows has struck out 15 batters, walked six, and given up only six hits after throwing 77 pitches over four innings of work on Thursday night. The Astros acquired the 26-year-old in a trade with the Pittsburgh Pirates in December, and so far, it's looking like it could be a steal for the Astros. Burrows made one relief appearance for Pittsburgh in 2024 but saw his first extended run in the majors last year, posting a 3.94 ERA and 1.24 WHIP with 97 strikeouts and 31 walks in 96 innings over 23 outings (19 starts). He has added a two-seam fastball to help neutralize right-handed hitters and has breakout potential as a high-strikeout arm. Particularly in dynasty/keeper formats, Burrows is becoming more attractive as a late-round dart throw by the day.

Mike Burrows Looking Strong in Early Spring Action

Houston Astros starting pitcher Mike Burrows landed with his new team as part of a three-team swap this offseason, and the team sees him as an "upside play" who can jump into their rotation right away. The Astros saw an opportunity to adjust his pitch mix a little bit and add in a two-seam fastball. The early returns have been very positive for Burrows, who has pitched five scoreless innings in his first two Grapefruit League outings, striking out six with two walks and two hits allowed. He went 2-4 with a 3.94 ERA, 4.00 FIP, and 97 strikeouts in 97 MLB innings with the Pirates last year, but the Astros could help unlock even stronger results from the 26-year-old righty this season. He's going at the end of drafts in most formats but is worth considering as a deep-league sleeper with considerable upside. The team has several starting pitching options to consider for the rotation, but they are high on Burrows, who seems to be on his way to earning a spot in the Opening Day rotation. At his extremely low ADP, Burrows is bursting with sleeper potential.

Astros Interested in Trading for Mike Burrows?

The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal reports that the Houston Astros have spoken to the Pittsburgh Pirates about right-hander Mike Burrows. However, those talks have cooled since the Pirates acquired outfield prospect Jhostynxon Garcia from the Boston Red Sox recently. Houston is seeking controllable young starting pitchers and could offer center fielder Jake Meyers in return. Burrows, 26, is coming off his second major-league season with the Pirates in 2025. In 96 innings pitched, he went 2-4 with a 3.94 ERA (4.00 FIP) and 1.24 WHIP with 97 strikeouts and 31 walks in 23 appearances (19 starts). He mostly features a fastball, changeup, and a slider, with all three pitches getting plenty of swings and misses. Burrows has been overshadowed in Pittsburgh by all their talented young arms, but he could become an intriguing flier in fantasy leagues in 2026 if he's moved to the Astros and joins their starting rotation.

Pirates Managing Mike Burrows' Innings

The Pittsburgh Pirates will skip right-hander Mike Burrows' turn in the rotation this week, but he will be available out of the bullpen for their weekend series against the Boston Red Sox. Pirates skipper Don Kelly said the team wants to manage Burrows' innings. He underwent Tommy John surgery in 2023 and returned to amass 54 2/3 innings between the minors and majors last year. Burrows has already combined for 109 frames this season between Triple-A Indianapolis and Pittsburgh. The 25-year-old has made 17 appearances (16 starts) for the Pirates and logged a respectable 4.23 ERA with a 1.24 WHIP, 78 strikeouts, and 28 walks.

Mike Burrows Stumbles in Season Debut

Pittsburgh Pirates right-handed pitching prospect Mike Burrows struggled in his season debut on Thursday against the Milwaukee Brewers. In this outing, Burrows tossed five innings of four-run ball. He allowed four hits and two walks. He struck out three. He ran into trouble early, allowing a three-run shot to Milwaukee outfielder Christian Yelich in the opening frame. Later in the second, his fourth earned run came on a solo shot by Joey Ortiz. Burrows was promoted from Triple-A Indianapolis to replace Carmen Mlodzinski in the rotation. Earlier this season, Burrows found success at the Triple-A level, logging a strong 2.51 ERA with a 1.05 WHIP across 31 1/3 innings of work. During this stretch, he struck out 41 batters and served up just 11 walks. He is slated to face a potent Arizona lineup in his next outing.

Mike Burrows Recalled from Triple-A, Will Start Thursday

Pittsburgh Pirates pitching prospect Mike Burrows was recalled from Triple-A Indianapolis on Wednesday and is expected to start Thursday's home game against the Brewers. The righty has pitched well this season at Triple-A, posting a 2.51 ERA, 1.05 WHIP, and a strong 23.1 percent K-BB% across 32 1/3 IP. While it will be his season debut in the majors, it will not be his first appearance there, as the 6-foot-1 hurler was called up late in 2024 and pitched 3 1/3 innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on two hits and three walks while striking out two. The Brewers are winners of three straight games, but have very contrasting home/road splits, with the team 15-9 at home but just 9-16 on the road. Be that as it may, Burrows hasn't pitched more than five innings in any start this season and will likely be on a short leash, leaving him as a poor DFS option.
