Ryan Helsley Plays Catch, Feeling Much Better

Baltimore Orioles right-handed closer Ryan Helsley (elbow) played catch on Friday for the first time since landing on the 15-day injured list, and he is feeling much better, according to Roch Kubatko of MASN Sports. Helsley landed on the shelf on May 1. It's good news that he's throwing, but he still has some boxes to check and will most likely need a short minor-league rehab assignment before he can rejoin the back end of Baltimore's bullpen. The 31-year-old former fifth-round pick by the St. Louis Cardinals in 2015 out of Northeastern State University is a two-time All-Star who led the league with 49 saves in 2024. Helsley also had 21 saves for St. Louis last year before being traded to the New York Mets and falling apart in 22 appearances. He was bouncing back in Baltimore before his elbow injury, striking out 15 while picking up seven saves in his first 10 2/3 innings. Keep him stashed in all fantasy leagues, as he should immediately take over closing duties upon his return. In the meantime, Rico Garcia has proven to be an elite short-term source of saves for fantasy managers.

Ryan Helsley has Not Resumed Throwing

Baltimore Orioles right-handed closer Ryan Helsley (elbow) has not resumed throwing as he recovers from right-elbow inflammation that landed him on the 15-day injured list on May 1, according to Jacob Calvin Meyer of The Baltimore Sun. The good news is that Helsley did some running drills at Camden Yards over the weekend. He will not be ready to come off the IL when he's eligible this week, so fantasy managers must remain patient with the 31-year-old veteran reliever. In his 12 appearances (10 2/3 innings) for the O's this year before his injury, Helsley went 0-2 with a 2.53 ERA, 1.31 WHIP, seven saves, 15 strikeouts, and seven walks. Helsley had a league-high 49 saves in 2024 with the St. Louis Cardinals and was named to his second All-Star team, but he struggled in 2025 after being traded to the New York Mets. He should be stashed in an IL spot while he recovers and will return to closing duties in Baltimore when he's ready. Rico Garcia has both of the team's saves since Helsley landed on the shelf, and he's the team's primary short-term option for saves.

Ryan Helsley Could Begin Throwing Later This Week

Baltimore Orioles closer Ryan Helsley (elbow) will be re-evaluated later this week to determine if he is ready to resume throwing, per Jacob Calvin Meyer of The Baltimore Sun. Helsley was placed on the 15-day injured list on Friday due to elbow discomfort, but an MRI on the elbow came back clean. The 31-year-old was off to a strong start to his first season in Baltimore before getting injured, pitching to a 2.53 ERA and 1.31 WHIP with 15 strikeouts and 7 saves across 10 2/3 innings. If Helsley continues to progress without any further setbacks, he may have a chance to return from the injured list as soon as he's eligible in mid-May. In his absence, Orioles right-hander Rico Garcia looks like the favorite to see save opportunities in Baltimore.

MRI on Ryan Helsley's Elbow Comes Back Clean, Orioles Expecting Quick Return?

An MRI on Baltimore Orioles closer Ryan Helsley's (elbow) right elbow came back clean, per Jacob Calvin Meyer of The Baltimore Sun. Per Calvin Meyer, Orioles manager Craig Albernaz said that his concern level for Helsley is "not high at all." Helsley was placed on the 15-day injured list on Friday after experiencing discomfort in his elbow, but the team reportedly expects him to be fine after taking some anti-inflammatories. Before getting injured, Helsley pitched to a 2.53 ERA and 1.31 WHIP with 12 strikeouts and seven saves across 10 2/3 innings. While elbow troubles are obviously a concern for any pitcher, it appears as though Helsley may avoid an extended stay on the IL. In his absence, Orioles relievers Andrew Kittredge, Rico Garcia, and Anthony Nunez could all see opportunities to work in the ninth inning. Kittredge is the most experienced of the bunch, with 21 saves in 312 career MLB appearances.

Ryan Helsley Placed on Injured List With Elbow Inflammation

Baltimore Orioles right-handed closer Ryan Helsley (elbow) was placed on the 15-day injured list on Friday with right-elbow inflammation, according to Jake Rill of MLB.com. This one is a bit of a surprise after Helsley looked fine in his last outing, when he locked down his seventh save of the year with a perfect ninth inning. It's quite a big shakeup in fantasy baseball leagues and will give managers a chance to poach some saves off the waiver wire for at least the next couple of weeks. It's unclear how Baltimore will approach save situations going forward, but they will most likely go with a committee approach that could involve all of Andrew Kittredge, Rico Garcia, Anthony Nunez, and Yennier Cano. Kittredge has the most experience (nine-plus seasons in the big leagues), but Garcia, Nunez, and Cano have all pitched extremely well this year and deserve opportunities as well. Garcia is probably your best bet if you're speculating, and he's currently rostered in 18% of Yahoo leagues. Helsley should be stashed in an IL spot in all leagues in what is looking like a bounce-back 2026 campaign. UPDATE: Imaging on Helsley's right elbow came back clean on Friday.

Ryan Helsley Returns From Bereavement List on Sunday

The Baltimore Orioles announced on Sunday that they reinstated right-handed closer Ryan Helsley from the bereavement/family medical emergency list and designated right-hander Albert Suarez for assignment in a corresponding move. Helsley was away from the team for four days. With the 31-year-old veteran away for personal matters, Anthony Nunez picked up the team's last save on Wednesday. Helsley is so far having a bounce-back season in 2026 in his first year with Baltimore, posting a 2.79 ERA, 1.45 WHIP, 15 strikeouts, seven walks, and six saves in 9 2/3 innings over his first 11 appearances. Fantasy managers will want to get him back into their starting lineups to close out the week now that he's back with the big-league club as their primary ninth-inning option. Helsley is a two-time All-Star and led baseball with 49 saves in 2024 with the St. Louis Cardinals.

Orioles Put Ryan Helsley on Bereavement List on Wednesday

The Baltimore Orioles announced on Wednesday that they placed right-handed closer Ryan Helsley on the bereavement/family medical emergency list and recalled right-hander Jose Espada from Triple-A Norfolk in a corresponding move. Helsley could be away from Baltimore for three to seven days. It's unclear what direction the O's will go in the ninth inning while Helsley is away, but Yennier Cano and Rico Garcia figure to be the two most likely options to receive save chances in the short term in Baltimore. The 31-year-old Helsley had 21 saves with the St. Louis last year before falling apart in New York in the second half after being acquired by the Mets in a trade. So far in 2026 with the Orioles, Helsley has bounced back as their closer, posting a 2.79 ERA, 1.45 WHIP, and 15:7 K:BB while converting all six of his saves. Most fantasy managers can avoid Baltimore's bullpen in the short term until Helsley returns.

Ryan Helsley Perfect En Route To Earning Fifth Save

Baltimore Orioles relief pitcher Ryan Helsley secured his team's dramatic comeback win over the Diamondbacks on Monday night by pitching a drama-free ninth inning. He retired the D-Backs in order, including a pair of strikeouts, to earn his fifth save in five save opportunities. He has pitched in seven games for Baltimore, allowing only two runs in 6 1/3 innings with nine strikeouts. He remains locked in as one of the best closing options in the league, and the 31-year-old righty reached a max of 101.2 mph on his 12 pitches on Monday. Fantasy managers can continue to use Helsley with confidence at the back end of Baltimore's bullpen.

Can Ryan Helsley Bounce Back in Baltimore?

Baltimore Orioles reliever Ryan Helsley is looking for a bounce-back campaign after posting disappointing results in 2025. Splitting time with the Cardinals and Mets last year, Helsley posted a 4.14 FIP with 10.13 K/9 and 4.02 BB/9 across 56 innings. While these weren't terrible numbers, it was still a subpar year relative to Helsley's standards, as he posted his worst FIP since 2020. The 31-year-old right-hander will look to get back on track as he plays for his third different team in less than 12 months. The Orioles gave him a two-year, $28 million contract that pencils him into the closer role. It's a familiar role for Helsley, who had 70 saves between 2024 and 2025, and it could result in him offering significant fantasy value on a potential contender this year. He currently ranks #9 among relief pitchers in RotoBaller's latest fantasy baseball rankings for 2026.

Can Ryan Helsley Return to Form With Orioles?

Baltimore Orioles right-handed reliever Ryan Helsley struggled in 2025, posting a 4.50 ERA and 1.54 WHIP with 79 strikeouts and 23 walks in 66 1/3 innings pitched. Helsley did save 21 games, the second-most in his seven-year career, but none of them came after being traded to the New York Mets, and he also had a 7.20 ERA in 22 outings for the Mets to close out the season. The 31-year-old joined the Orioles on a two-year, $28 million deal this offseason as he looks to bounce back in 2026. Helsley gave up 16 earned runs in his final 20 innings with New York, but he should be the O's primary closer entering the regular season, and he's just one year removed from career bests in ERA (2.96) and saves (49). His poor finish last year may have primarily been the result of him tipping his pitches, so if he can get that fixed, Helsley is a nice bounce-back candidate. RotoBaller has Helsley ranked as the No. 10 fantasy closer.
