Ryan Yarbrough News
The Tampa Bay Rays optioned left-hander Ryan Yarbrough to Triple-A Durham on Tuesday and recalled right-hander Luke Bard from Durham in a corresponding move. Young right-hander Shane Baz, who should be added in all formats if he's still available, will take Yarbrough's rotation spot and make his season debut against the Minnesota Twins sometime this weekend. Yarbrough allowed six earned runs while getting only five outs in his most recent start on Sunday against the Chicago White Sox, and he's now 0-3 on the season with a 5.65 ERA, 1.53 WHIP, 20 strikeouts and 10 walks in 28 2/3 innings over seven outings (six starts). The 30-year-old southpaw should be back eventually with the Rays, but it may be as a reliever.
Tampa Bay Rays starting pitcher Ryan Yarbrough (groin) will be activated from the 10-day injured list on Tuesday. He has been named the team's starting pitcher for Tuesday's game against the Oakland Athletics. The 30-year-old was placed on the 10-day injured list due to left groin tightness just a few days into the regular season. He has yet to pitch for the team in 2022 so Tuesday will mark his season debut. Last year, the left-hander went 9-7 with a 5.11 ERA and a 1.23 WHIP.
Tampa Bay Rays left-hander Ryan Yarbrough (groin) was scheduled for a minor league rehab appearances with Triple-A Durham on April 28, and manager Kevin Cash would like to see him get to the 50-pitch mark before he rejoins the starting rotation. Yarbrough landed on the injured list on April 11 with left groin tightness. In his rehab outing Thursday, the 30-year-old looked sharper in his second rehab outing while throwing 59 pitches and allowing no earned runs and striking out four in 2 2/3 innings. It's unclear if he'll have to make one more rehab appearance before the Rays activate him from the IL. In other reliever news, right-hander J.T. Chargois (oblique) has advanced to playing catch at 90 feet.

Tampa Bay Rays starting pitcher Ryan Yarbrough was finally utilized more as a starter than a follow-on pitcher, contrary to previous years and it suited him quite well. He didn't impress in the win column (the sole win was as a follow-on starter), but the supporting stats should cause some eyebrows to raise. Yarbrough had a 3.80 FIP, 1.19 WHIP and tied Kenta Maeda for the MLB lead (minimum 50 innings pitched) in Chase rate (40.8%). Many will frown at his 13.7% K-BB rate. However, his Chase and 13.3% Swinging Strike rate are encouraging of future improvements in strikeouts to accompany his stellar 5% walk rate. Yarbrough utilized a four-pitch mix and it is his least throw pitch, slider, that gets the most strikeouts (35%) while his changeup forces batters to expand the strike zone (44%). Yarbrough also attempted to alleviate any concern as a starter by holding batters to a .229 AVG the third time through the order (3.00 ERA), despite a .304 BABIP. Blake Snell and Charlie Morton are no longer in Tampa Bay which leaves Yarbrough a stable spot in the rotation. He is a great option near pick 255 to help stabilize the ratios, assuming you've already hedged your strikeout numbers.
