Ryan Yarbrough News
Kansas City Royals pitcher Ryan Yarbrough (groin) threw one inning during a minor league game on Thursday. Manager Matt Quatraro mentioned that everything went great during his outing. The left-hander has been dealing with a minor groin injury throughout camp. The hope is that Yarbrough will be able to make a Cactus League appearance soon. He is progressing well and should be available on Opening Day. However, his exact role with the team is unknown right now. Yarbrough has been a swingman throughout his career, so it's possible he continues with that role in Kansas City. The 31-year-old could have some streaming appeal when starting, but it would be dependent on the lineup he's pitching against on that day.
The Kansas City Royals reached a one-year deal with free agent pitcher Ryan Yarbrough Tuesday, per the team's Twitter page. Pitcher Wyatt Mills was designated for assignment in a corresponding move. The 30-year-old lefty spent five seasons with the Tampa Bay Rays, compiling a 4.33 ERA, 1.20 WHIP, and 19.2% strikeout rate. However, he only pitched 80 innings in 2022 before being designated for assignment, going 3-8 with a 4.50 ERA and 1.38 WHIP. While Yarbrough could serve as a decent back-of-the-rotation option for the Royals, his lack of strikeouts combined with a new poor lineup supporting him limits his fantasy value.
The Tampa Bay Rays designated left-hander Ryan Yarbrough for assignment on Tuesday, and he'll likely be non-tendered by Friday's deadline, which would make him a free agent and able to sign with any team. Yarbrough ended his 2022 season on the injured list due to an oblique strain, and he struggled when he was healthy to the tune of a 4.50 ERA (4.77 FIP), a 1.37 WHIP, 61 strikeouts and 22 walks in 80 innings pitched over 20 appearances (nine starts). Yarbrough hasn't been as good in the last two seasons in Tampa, but he's mostly been an effective swing man in his five big-league seasons for the Rays. In his career, the 30-year-old southpaw has a 4.33 ERA (4.15 FIP), a 1.20 WHIP and a 467:131 K:BB in 579 2/3 innings over 127 outings (59 starts), all with the Rays.

Tampa Bay Rays starting pitcher Ryan Yarbrough was finally utilized more as a starter than a follow-on pitcher, contrary to previous years and it suited him quite well. He didn't impress in the win column (the sole win was as a follow-on starter), but the supporting stats should cause some eyebrows to raise. Yarbrough had a 3.80 FIP, 1.19 WHIP and tied Kenta Maeda for the MLB lead (minimum 50 innings pitched) in Chase rate (40.8%). Many will frown at his 13.7% K-BB rate. However, his Chase and 13.3% Swinging Strike rate are encouraging of future improvements in strikeouts to accompany his stellar 5% walk rate. Yarbrough utilized a four-pitch mix and it is his least throw pitch, slider, that gets the most strikeouts (35%) while his changeup forces batters to expand the strike zone (44%). Yarbrough also attempted to alleviate any concern as a starter by holding batters to a .229 AVG the third time through the order (3.00 ERA), despite a .304 BABIP. Blake Snell and Charlie Morton are no longer in Tampa Bay which leaves Yarbrough a stable spot in the rotation. He is a great option near pick 255 to help stabilize the ratios, assuming you've already hedged your strikeout numbers.
