Ryan Yarbrough Agrees With Yankees on One-Year Deal

Free-agent left-hander Ryan Yarbrough agreed with the New York Yankees on an undisclosed one-year deal on Monday, pending a physical, a source told Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic. ESPN's Buster Olney is reporting that Yarbrough is signing for $2.5 million. The 33-year-old veteran southpaw served in a swing role for the Yankees in 2025, starting in eight of his 19 appearances in pinstripes. In his 64 innings pitched, Yarbrough held a 3-1 record, 4.36 ERA (5.04 FIP), and 1.20 WHIP with a save, 55 strikeouts, and 19 walks. Yarbrough has a career 4.22 ERA and 1.18 WHIP in eight major-league seasons with five different teams. He's not much of a draw in fantasy baseball with a career 7.1 K/9 mark in 832 innings pitched, but he'll give the Yankees plenty of flexibility in terms of role, with the team expected to be without several of their high-end starting pitchers to begin the 2026 season.

Ryan Yarbrough to Return as Reliever

New York Yankees pitcher Ryan Yarbrough (oblique) is set to return to the team as a relief pitcher, according to manager Aaron Boone. The southpaw is currently on the 15-day injured list due to an oblique issue. This season, Yarbrough owns a 3.90 ERA, 1.17 WHIP, and a 49/17 K/BB ratio across 16 appearances (eight starts) with the Yankees. Yarbrough is eligible to return from the injured list on Saturday. That is good news for the Yankees bullpen, but Yarbrough won't offer much fantasy value as a reliever.

Ryan Yarbrough to Continue Rehab Assignment

New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Thursday that left-hander Ryan Yarbrough (oblique) will make at least one more rehab start before being activated from the injured list. The southpaw is rehabbing from a strained right oblique and has already made two rehab appearances while getting his pitch count up to 50. When he returns, Yarbrough may end up in a long relief role as Luis Gil took his rotation spot when he was out. Yarbrough has pitched in 16 games this year, starting eight of them, and has racked up 49 strikeouts in 55 innings with an ERA of 3.90 and a WHIP of 1.17.

Ryan Yarbrough Tosses Live Batting Practice

New York Yankees pitcher Ryan Yarbrough (oblique) recently completed a live batting practice session, reports Bryan Hoch of MLB.com. He had two "ups" during the batting practice, and could potentially be in store for a longer buildup to restore his stamina. The 33-year-old last pitched on June 18 before suffering a strained oblique. He was used both as a starting pitcher and long reliever at times this season for the Yankees, and it's not clear which of those roles he would fill upon his return. It seems that they want to at least stretch him out to be a starter, if necessary. The lefty has posted a 3.90 ERA and 1.17 WHIP in 55 innings so far in 2025.

Ryan Yarbrough to Face Hitters Thursday

New York Yankees left-hander Ryan Yarbrough (oblique) will face live hitters Thursday for the first time since he went on the 15-day injured list with a strained right oblique on June 20. The plan is for Yarbrough to begin at 30 to 35 pitches, and once he's around 50, the Yankees could activate him from the IL. Yarbrough signed a one-year, $2 million contract with the Yankees shortly before the season began and turned in respectable results for the club over his first couple of months in pinstripes. The soft-tossing 33-year-old has totaled 16 appearances (eight starts) and gone 3-1 with a 3.90 ERA, a 1.17 WHIP, and 49:17 K:BB in 55 1/3 innings.

Ryan Yarbrough, Mark Leiter Jr. Continue Throwing Programs

New York Yankees left-hander Ryan Yarbrough (oblique) and reliever Mark Leiter Jr. (leg) are both working their way through throwing programs, according to Bryan Hoch of MLB.com. Yarbrough has been out since late June with an oblique strain and has yet to begin throwing from a mound. The 33-year-old was solid in a hybrid starter/reliever role before getting injured, throwing 55 1/3 innings (8 starts) with a 3.90 ERA, 1.17 WHIP, 49 strikeouts, and three wins. Yarbrough could be in the mix for the Yankees as a back-end starter or long reliever upon his return. Leiter Jr. suffered a stress fracture in his left leg in late June and attempted to pitch through the injury before being placed on the 15-day injured list in early July. Hoch reports that the team plans for Leiter Jr. to progress to a bullpen session next week. In 34 1/3 innings before getting hurt, Leiter Jr. was 4-6 with a 4.46 ERA, 1.57 WHIP, 46 strikeouts, and two saves. He's an option in middle and late relief for the Yankees, but not a serious threat to rack up saves.

Ryan Yarbrough Resumes Throwing

New York Yankees pitcher Ryan Yarbrough (oblique) resumed a throwing program on Wednesday, according to manager Aaron Boone. This is a step in the right direction for Yarbrough who has been sidelined since mid-June due to a right oblique strain. It seems likely that the Yankees are going to wait until after the All-Star break to bring Yarbrough back into the mix. The left-hander figures to require at least one rehab start before returning to the Bronx. It's uncertain if Yarbrough will have a rotation spot once he's back, so he's not someone that needs to be stashed right now

Ryan Yarbrough’s Return Uncertain, Could Toss Soon

New York Yankees left-hander Ryan Yarbrough (oblique) has yet to resume throwing as he works his way back from the injured list. Out since June 20, there is still no clear timetable for his return. Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Saturday that Yarbrough is "getting over the hump" and could begin a throwing program soon. It's another blow to a Yankees rotation already hit hard by injuries. Yarbrough owns a 3.90 ERA this season, along with a solid 21.7% strikeout rate and a 7.5% walk rate. Once healthy, Yarbrough is expected to return in a bullpen role with the possibility of spot starts. The impending return of Luis Gil (lat) further limits Yarbrough's fantasy upside in the short term.

Ryan Yarbrough Placed on 15-Day Injured List

New York Yankees left-handed pitcher Ryan Yarbrough (oblique) was placed on the 15-day injured list with a right oblique strain. In a corresponding move, the Yankees promoted left-handed pitcher Jayvien Sandridge from Triple-A. Outside of an eight-run outing on June 7, Yarbrough has been an effective spot-starter and long relief option for the Yankees. Across 55 1/3 total innings of work, the southpaw has posted a 3.90 ERA with a strong 1.17 WHIP. During this stretch, Yarbrough has struck out 49 batters and posted an elite 7.5% walk rate. Yarbrough has also generated hard-hits at an impressive 32.2% rate and barrels at a 5.1% rate. While Yarbrough remains out of action, fantasy managers should expect Allan Winans to replace Yarbrough in the rotation on Monday when they begin a series against the Reds.

Ryan Yarbrough Shuts Down Dodgers in Victory

New York Yankees left-hander Ryan Yarbrough (3-0) held down the Los Angeles Dodgers' high-octane offense on Sunday to nab his third victory of the season. The Yankees won 7-3 behind a sterling six-inning effort from Yarbrough, who yielded one run on four hits while striking out five and walking none. With injuries ravaging their pitching staff, the Yankees signed Yarbrough to a low-risk deal worth $2 million shortly before the season began. The move has paid major dividends for the Yankees, as Yarbrough has given the club 41 1/3 innings of 2.83 ERA ball with 40 strikeouts and 11 walks. Yarbrough has been particularly effective since moving from the Yankees' bullpen to their rotation on May 3. In five starts since then, the 33-year-old has surrendered a paltry six runs on 16 hits with 24:5 K:BB across 26 frames. Despite his resounding success over the past month, Yarbrough remains a risky play for fantasy managers. His next start could come against a tough Boston Red Sox offense during the upcoming week.
