Samuel Basallo Blasts Another Home Run, Top Catcher to Target Amid Hot Streak

Baltimore Orioles catcher Samuel Basallo went 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBI in Friday's 6-5 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays. Basallo crushed a solo shot off Austin Voth during the bottom of the fifth inning, raising his home run total to nine on the season. The 21-year-old is starting to heat up and is hitting .364 (4-for-11) with two home runs, six RBI, and three runs scored over 14 plate appearances in his last five games. He is ranked as the No. 1 catcher to add based on the latest RotoBaller waiver wire rankings. Basallo is rostered in 55% of Yahoo leagues and is emerging as a top waiver wire add due to his recent hot streak.

Samuel Basallo a Waiver Priority While on Nine-Game Hitting Streak

Baltimore Orioles catcher Samuel Basallo went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Saturday's 13-3 loss to the hosting Washington Nationals in D.C. to extend his current hitting streak to nine games. The left-handed-hitting Dominican backstop is now batting .278 on the year with an .833 OPS as one of the better young hitters in the game. He also has a decent .341 on-base percentage and .492 slugging percentage with six home runs and 17 RBI on the year across 138 plate appearances. The 21-year-old will see regular playing time between catcher and designated hitter while sharing time behind the plate with Adley Rutschman. Manager Craig Albernaz has said that Basallo has earned the right to face left-handed pitchers, which is huge. So far in 2026, he's gone 7-for-25 (.280) against southpaws with one of his six home runs. Basallo is one of the better young catchers in the game, and he's rostered in only 40% of Yahoo leagues at the moment.

Samuel Basallo Returns to Tuesday's Lineup as the DH

Baltimore Orioles catcher Samuel Basallo (knee) will return to the starting lineup as the designated hitter and bat fifth for the O's for Tuesday's game against the visiting New York Yankees and right-hander Will Warren, according to MLB.com. Baltimore scratched Basallo out of an abundance of caution in the series opener on Monday due to discomfort in his left knee, but he's back in the lineup a day later. The 21-year-old should be returned to fantasy lineups in traditional leagues against Warren, whom he has hit .286 against in his seven career at-bats. The left-handed-hitting backstop is having a strong 2026 season so far, too, slashing .270/.333/.470 with an .803 OPS, five home runs, 15 RBI, and 14 runs scored in 115 at-bats. Although he has yet to clear the fences in May, Basallo has gone 12-for-33 (.364) with four doubles, a triple, six RBI, and four runs scored in 10 games to begin the month.

Samuel Basallo is Fine After Being Scratched With Knee Injury

Baltimore Orioles manager Craig Albernaz said after the 3-2 win on Monday over the division-rival New York Yankees that catcher Samuel Basallo (knee) will be fine, according to Roch Kubatko of MASN Sports. The Orioles scratched the young backstop from the starting lineup on Monday as a precaution due to discomfort in his left knee. It sounds like he will avoid a stint on the injured list, and he could be back in the starting nine as soon as Game 2 of the series in Baltimore against the Yankees on Tuesday. Adley Rutschman got the start behind the plate on Monday and did the catching for right-hander Brandon Young. The left-handed-hitting Basallo has handled himself well so far in 2026 in his first full year in the majors, slashing .270/.333/.470 with an .803 OPS, five home runs, 15 RBI, and 14 runs scored in 33 games across 126 plate appearances. Despite the presence of Rutschman, Basallo is expected to continue catching enough to retain eligibility at the position for fantasy managers, which is a big deal. He's currently rostered in 35% of Yahoo leagues.

Samuel Basallo is Scratched with Knee Discomfort

Baltimore Orioles catcher Samuel Basallo (knee) has been scratched from the starting lineup ahead of Monday's game against the New York Yankees. Basallo is dealing with some left knee discomfort after a collision at home plate during the seventh inning of Sunday's game. The expectation is that he'll undergo further testing to determine the severity of the issue. For now, fantasy managers should consider Basallo as day-to-day. Basallo has been crushing the ball lately, so hopefully he won't be forced to miss much time. Coby Mayo will serve as the designated hitter and bat sixth against left-hander Ryan Weathers on Monday.

Samuel Basallo Belts First Home Run of 2026 on Wednesday

Baltimore Orioles catcher Samuel Basallo went 2-for-5 in Wednesday's 8-3 win over the Rangers, with one of his hits being his first home run of 2026. It was a 437-foot solo blast to center that came off the bat at 109.5 mph. The left-handed slugger has reached base safely via hit or walk in four of the first five games, and there should be plenty more home runs on the way over the course of the season. The 21-year-old is getting regular at-bats to begin the year, making three starts at designated hitter, two at catcher, and one at first base, so with consistent playing time, there should be upwards of 25 home runs (or more) in his bat in 2026. The Dominican is available in more than 60 percent of Yahoo! leagues, but that number will probably start to creep up, especially when he gains eligibility at first base.

Samuel Basallo Resting on Monday

Baltimore Orioles catcher Samuel Basallo is not in the starting lineup for the series opener on Monday at Camden Yards against the visiting Texas Rangers, according to MLB.com. Adley Rutschman is behind the plate and will bat cleanup for the O's against right-hander Jack Leiter. Outfielder Tyler O'Neill is the designated hitter and will hit out of the five-hole. The 21-year-old Basallo will get his first day off of the 2026 season after he started in each of the first three games of the year versus the Minnesota Twins. Basallo went 2-for-10 in the first three games with two walks and four strikeouts at the dish. Young outfielder Dylan Beavers is also making a start on Monday with O'Neill at DH, getting the nod in right field and batting sixth. Basallo should be back in the starting lineup for fantasy managers for Game 2 of the series on Tuesday night.

Samuel Basallo Flashing Immense Upside in Spring Training

Baltimore Orioles catcher Samuel Basallo has been off to an impressive start to spring training, offering plenty of optimism for his performance during the regular season. He currently owns a .320/.414/.560 slash line with one home run, seven RBI, and a 13.8% walk rate. His strikeout rate is an alarming 27.6%, but that's a fair trade-off if the bat continues to play. The improved slash line is a welcome sign for fantasy managers, given that Basallo slashed .165/.229/.330 with 55 wRC+ across 31 games in the majors last year. The Orioles are still optimistic that Basallo can be their catcher of the future, so his solid spring is encouraging. He'll likely split catching duties with Adley Rutschman this year.

Samuel Basallo is Returning on Sunday

Baltimore Orioles catcher Samuel Basallo (abdomen) is back in the starting lineup ahead of Sunday's Grapefruit League game against the Boston Red Sox. Basallo was forced to make an early exit during Thursday's game due to abdominal discomfort. He received a few days off to rest and is ready to return behind the plate on Sunday. The 21-year-old struggled during his 31 games with the Orioles last season. Despite some early struggles, the Orioles have confidence that Basallo can be their catcher of the future. He'll bat cleanup and start behind the plate against the Red Sox on Sunday.

Samuel Basallo Thinks he Can Play This Weekend

Baltimore Orioles catcher Samuel Basallo (abdomen) said he's "feeling good" after being checked by the medical team on Thursday, according to Jake Rill of MLB.com. Basallo felt "cramping" as part of the discomfort that he felt while tagging a runner out at home plate in Thursday's Grapefruit League game against the Detroit Tigers. The good news is that it's not a serious injury, and he won't go for additional testing. Basallo thinks he'd be ready to play this weekend, but it's up to the team. "Everything is good," Basallo said through an interpreter. The 21-year-old backstop appears to have dodged a bullet and should be ready for the start of his first full season in the big leagues, and he's expected to play regularly behind the dish against right-handers. Basallo is one of the more intriguing up-and-coming young catchers with plenty of power upside. Target him as a high-end No. 2 catcher.
