Seranthony Dominguez Falling Out of Closer Job?

Chicago White Sox closer Seranthony Dominguez took the loss on Thursday against the Tampa Bay Rays and got tagged with his second blown save of the season. Dom nguez has now converted three of his five save opportunities. In Thursday's outing, Dom nguez entered the contest with a 3-2 lead, allowing three earned runs on two hits and one walk in 1/3 of an inning pitched. Dom nguez's other blown save came earlier in the season against Milwaukee and was also a blow-up type of outing, where he allowed two earned runs on one walk and two hits. He now has a 7.50 ERA and 1.83 WHIP through seven appearances. All five of his earned runs allowed came in the two blown save opportunities. The White Sox do not have much competition for bullpen arms to dethrone Dom nguez as closer just yet; however, he is running on thin ice and could be in jeopardy of losing the role if he doesn't provide more consistency moving forward. Fantasy managers who drafted Dom nguez as their back-end closer may want to begin to think of potential contingency plans on the off chance the White Sox do decide to try someone else out.

Seranthony Dominguez Tallies Second Save for White Sox

Chicago White Sox right-hander Seranthony Dominguez tallied his second save of the season on Thursday in the White Sox's 2-0 victory over the Kansas City Royals. He had a clean ninth inning, allowing one walk and striking out two Royals batters. Dominguez has now secured two saves in three total opportunities after a disappointing effort in his first save chance, where he allowed two earned runs in 1/3 innings against the Milwaukee Brewers back on March 29. Since that blown save, Dominguez has recorded three converted on three consecutive scoreless outings and has racked up a win and two saves in that time, and appears to have a clear grip on the closer role for the White Sox so long as he keeps converting his chances to close out games. On the season, Dominguez owns a 3.86 ERA and 1.50 WHIP with five strikeouts and three walks in five appearances.

Can Seranthony Dominguez Be a Reliable Closer in 2026?

Chicago White Sox relief pitcher Seranthony Dominguez is set to open the 2026 season as his team's primary closer. The 31-year-old signed a two-year contract with Chicago this past winter after posting a 3.16 ERA and 1.28 ERA with 79 strikeouts across 62 2/3 innings split between the Baltimore Orioles and Toronto Blue Jays in 2025. Dominguez recorded an impressive 30.3% strikeout rate, but he also allowed an elevated 13.8% walk rate. While Dominguez lowered his HR/9 to 0.72 in 2025, he allowed an elevated 1.84 HR/9 in 2024. If his struggles with the long ball return in 2026, his tendency to issue free passes could impact his ERA. Still, Dominguez should have an extended runway in the ninth inning in Chicago, and he's consistently demonstrated an ability to generate strikeouts throughout his MLB career. He may not have high-end upside, but Dominguez could be an undervalued source of saves and strikeouts for fantasy managers in 2026.

Is Seranthony Dominguez an Undervalued Source of Saves Heading into 2026?

Across 62 2/3 innings split between the Baltimore Orioles and Toronto Blue Jays in 2025, veteran relief pitcher Seranthony Dominguez recorded a 4-4 record with a 3.16 ERA, 1.28 WHIP, 79 strikeouts, and two saves. Dominguez's performance was enough to earn him a two-year deal from the Chicago White Sox in free agency, where he is expected to be the team's primary closer. The 30-year-old is far from a perfect pitcher, as he posted an elevated 13.8% walk rate in 2025 and allowed an inflated 1.84 HR/9 as recently as 2024. However, Dominguez struck out 30.3% of the batters he faced in 2025 and should have a long runway as Chicago's primary option in the ninth inning. Dominguez also pitched well in the World Baseball Classic for the Dominican Republic this spring, allowing just three base runners and zero earned runs across four appearances. If he can keep his walk and home run rates in check, Dominguez could be an undervalued source of saves heading into 2026.

Seranthony Dominguez Named White Sox's Closer

Chicago White Sox manager Will Venable said that right-hander Seranthony Dominguez will be the team's closer to begin the 2026 season, according to James Fegan of Sox Machine. The White Sox signed Dominguez to a two-year, $20 million contract last month. The 31-year-old veteran has only 40 career saves in seven big-league seasons with three different teams, with 16 of them coming in his first major-league season in 2018 with the Philadelphia Phillies. Dominguez struck out 30.3% of the hitters he faced and had an opponent's expected batting average of just .200, partly because of a new split-finger fastball that he introduced. In a career-high 62 2/3 innings pitched for the Baltimore Orioles and Toronto Blue Jays, he held a 3.16 ERA, 1.28 WHIP, two saves, 20 holds, 79 strikeouts, and 36 walks. Dominguez's splitter is nasty and regularly generates whiffs, but a career-high 13.8% walk rate is worrisome, and he's unlikely to see a ton of save chances on one of the worst teams in baseball.

White Sox Sign Seranthony Dominguez to a Two-Year Deal

The Chicago White Sox have signed free agent reliever Seranthony Dominguez to a two-year, $20 million contract, according to Jeff Passan of ESPN.com. The deal includes a mutual option for 2028. The White Sox recently traded away outfielder Luis Robert Jr., and now, they're allocating that extra money to bolster their bullpen. Dominguez is a 31-year-old right-hander who split the 2025 season between Baltimore and Toronto. He posted a solid 3.23 xFIP with 11.4 K/9, but his walk rate soared to a career-high clip of 5.2 BB/9. There's a lot to like about his repertoire, though. Dominguez's sweeper grades out at 130 Stuff+ by FanGraphs' model, and it generated whiffs at a phenomenal 49.1% clip with a .112 xBA. His splitter is similarly dominant with 118 Stuff+, a 49.5% whiff rate, and a .141 xBA. Dominguez offers an analytically intriguing arm out of the White Sox' bullpen, and Joel Sherman of the New York Post reports that he's expected to be the team's closer. He will be a key piece for the White Sox down the stretch if they end up playing competitive baseball in 2026. If not, he'll be an intriguing name to monitor at the trade deadline with a year and a half left on his contract.

Seranthony Dominguez Linked as Potential Option for Diamondbacks

Free agent relief pitcher Seranthony Dominguez is viewed as a top option for the Diamondbacks' bullpen, according to Jack Sommers of Sports Illustrated. The Diamondbacks are in the market to add to their bullpen as both of their top options, A.J. Puk (elbow) and Justin Martinez (elbow), are expected to miss the first half as they recover from Tommy John surgery. While Kevin Ginkel could fill the closer role for the short term, they have begun exploring the free agent market to add some depth to their bullpen. Dominguez is viewed as one of those options. Last summer, the right-hander logged 62 2/3 innings to the tune of a 3.16 ERA with a 1.28 WHIP. However, he generated an elite .198 xBA, suggesting he should see better results in 2026. Dominguez has also had experience in the closer role, totaling 11 saves in 2024 and 16 saves back in 2018. If he were to sign with the Diamondbacks, he would carry sleeper appeal as he would be in the mix to earn the primary ninth-inning job during the first half.

Juaron Watts-Brown Headed to Baltimore in Seranthony Dominguez Trade

The Toronto Blue Jays traded away right-handed pitching prospect Juaron Watts-Brown in exchange for right-handed reliever Seranthony Dominguez from the Baltimore Orioles, according to Jeff Passan of ESPN. The 2023 third-round pick out of Oklahoma State has split time between High-A and Double-A with Toronto this season, totaling 89 innings with a 3.54 ERA, 1.21 WHIP, and a 20.4% K-BB%. The 23-year-old has operated solely as a starter and has strong grades on his slider and curveball. The command will be what determines his future role as a starter or reliever, but it's a solid foundation with two plus breaking balls despite a below-average fastball. While there are differences, the Orioles found success with a similar archetype of pitcher in Kyle Bradish, who is known for his wicked breaking balls. Watts-Brown has posted gaudy swinging strike rates since debuting in 2024, and already ranks as the number eight prospect in the Orioles system by MLB Pipeline.

Blue Jays Acquiring Seranthony Dominguez From Orioles

The Toronto Blue Jays are acquiring right-handed reliever Seranthony Dominguez from the Baltimore Orioles on Tuesday in exchange for right-handed pitching prospect Juaron Watts-Brown, a source tells ESPN's Jeff Passan. Even with closer Felix Bautista (shoulder) on the injured list, the disappointing Orioles have firmly become sellers at the trade deadline and have traded away both Dominguez and lefty Gregory Soto, who were both in line for saves with Bautista on the shelf. Until Bautista returns, the O's will now be forced to go with some combination of Yennier Cano and Andrew Kittredge in save situations. Dominguez, meanwhile, will lose most of his short-term fantasy appeal for those scrounging for saves with the move to Toronto. The 30-year-old veteran should settle into a late-inning setup role in front of closer Jeff Hoffman.

Seranthony Dominguez Dealing with Sore Back

Baltimore Orioles relief pitcher Seranthony Dominguez (back) has been unavailable to pitch for the past two days due to a sore back. Jake Rill of MLB.com noted that Dominguez suffered this minor injury because he "slept funny." Dominguez made his last appearance on June 30 when he tossed 1 2/3 innings of one-run ball (unearned run) with three strikeouts. Since June 1, Dominguez has been one of the most dominant relief pitchers in baseball, having not allowed an earned run while maintaining a 0.92 WHIP through 13 innings of work. In total, Dominguez has posted a 3.15 ERA with a 1.22 WHIP across 34 1/3 innings. He has struck out 45 hitters while allowing walks at an eight 14.4% rate. While Dominguez remains sidelined, fantasy managers should expect Felix Bautista to remain the top closer while Gregory Soto, Yennier Cano, and Bryan Baker see other high-leverage options.
