Taylor Walls to Miss At Least 3-4 Weeks

Tampa Bay Rays shortstop Taylor Walls (oblique) will open the 2026 season on the Injured List. According to Marc Topkin, Walls is going to miss a minimum of 3-4 weeks due to this oblique issue. This would give Walls a timetable to return around late April or early May. His absence should mean that Carson Williams gets a chance to cement himself as the everyday shortstop. The 22-year-old got a taste of the MLB last season, playing 32 games with the Rays. He struggled with a .172/.219/.354 slash line, but the Rays are hopeful that the top prospect has made the correct adjustments. Walls could overtake the shortstop job once healthy due to his elite defensive skills, but his struggles at the plate make him difficult to roster in basically any fantasy format.

Taylor Walls Will Open 2026 on the Injured List Due to Oblique Issue

Tampa Bay Rays shortstop Taylor Walls (oblique) is set to open 2026 on the Injured List due to an oblique issue, per Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times. With Walls sidelined, Topkin reports that top Rays prospect Carson Williams is "likely" to be the team's Opening Day starter at shortstop. Across 317 plate appearances in 2025, the glove-first Walls hit .220/.280/.319 with four home runs, 38 RBI, 36 runs scored, and 14 stolen bases. The 29-year-old is a career .195/.286/.298 hitter across 1,560 MLB plate appearances, rendering him largely unusable in the majority of fantasy formats. Walls' strong defensive metrics could lead to him regaining Tampa Bay's starting shortstop role once healthy. However, Williams appears likely to get an extended run of everyday playing time and could be a player for fantasy managers to target as a cheap source of power and speed.

Taylor Walls is Making Spring Debut on Sunday

Tampa Bay Rays shortstop Taylor Walls (hernia) is set to make his Spring Training debut versus the Pittsburgh Pirates on Sunday. Walls underwent sports hernia surgery in September, but appears to be fully healthy now. The 29-year-old figures to begin the season as the starting shortstop with Carson Williams waiting in the wings. Last season, Walls slashed .220/.280/.319 with four home runs, 38 RBI, and 14 stolen bases in 101 games. Walls is a below-average hitter, but makes up for it with his elite fielding ability. The Rays will likely stick with Walls to begin the season due to his defensive ability, but his struggles as a hitter make him a shaky fantasy option.

Taylor Walls Appears Set to Start at Shortstop

Tampa Bay Rays infielder Taylor Walls will likely start at shortstop to open the season, according to Adam Berry of MLB.com. Walls is working his way back from a groin strain that cost him the final two months of the regular season. He played 101 games in 2025, slashing just .220/.280/.319 with a career-low 8.2% walk rate and 22.1% strikeout rate. He contributed just 66 wRC+, which is concerning. However, he made up for his subpar hitting with above-average production in the field. He posted 1 OAA, 1 FRV, and 3.6 fWAR on defense last year, bringing his overall total WAR contribution to 0.3 wins. While Berry reports that Walls should patrol shortstop on Opening Day, it's worth noting that the 29-year-old switch-hitter doesn't have the greatest job security. Former top prospect Carson Williams, who debuted last year, is on the 40-man roster, and the Rays also have middle infield depth in Brett Wisely and Jadher Areinamo.

Taylor Walls to Undergo Season-Ending Surgery

Tampa Bay Rays shortstop Taylor Walls (groin) will undergo season-ending core muscle surgery. Walls has been on the 10-day injured list with a strained left groin since Aug. 12, and after visiting a specialist on Wednesday, the 29-year-old will shut it down for 2025. He should be ready for spring training next year. The slick-fielding Walls played in 101 games this season and hit .220/.280/.319 with four homers, 38 RBI, 36 runs scored, and 14 stolen bases in 317 plate appearances. Walls totaled a team-leading 94 appearances at shortstop, but prospect Carson Williams has taken over as the starter since his debut on Aug. 22.

Taylor Walls Will See a Specialist For His Groin on Wednesday

Tampa Bay Rays shortstop Taylor Walls (groin) will see a specialist, Dr. William Meyers, on September 3. He had started running and doing some strengthening exercises previously, but is still experiencing "mild discomfort" in his back and left groin, MLB.com reports. Walls was placed on the injured list on August 12 with a groin injury, and it appears that he will now seek additional help to understand why he has not yet recovered after some time off. The Rays are currently three and a half games back in the AL Wild Card race and are looking to get to full strength if possible. Walls has improved his defensive play in 2025 based on OAA (Outs Above Average); however, from an offensive and fantasy standpoint, he has struggled at the plate this season, slashing .220/.280/.319, and should remain on the waiver wire in redraft formats.

Taylor Walls Lands on the 10-Day Injured List

The Tampa Bay Rays announced on Tuesday that they have placed infielder Taylor Walls (groin) on the 10-day injured list and recalled outfielder Tristan Peters from Triple-A Durham, Rays Communications reports. Walls had been day-to-day since injuring his groin last Friday, August 8, against the Seattle Mariners. Walls is a strong defensive player; however, he has struggled at the plate this season, slashing .220/.280/.319 with 36 runs scored, four home runs, 38 RBI, and four stolen bases. Additionally, his career slash line in his five MLB seasons is .195/.286/.298. Although this is tough news for the Rays team and their fans, Walls is not a recommended option in fantasy baseball and should remain on the waiver wire.

Taylor Walls Scratched from Saturday's Lineup

Tampa Bay Rays shortstop Taylor Walls (groin) was scratched from the starting lineup ahead of Saturday's game against the Seattle Mariners. Walls reportedly played through a groin issue on Friday, but it was too much for him to play on Saturday. As a result, Walls will be pulled from the lineup, but he might be available off the bench. In his absence, Ha-Seong Kim will take over at shortstop and bat seventh versus right-hander Logan Evans. Fantasy managers should consider Walls as day-to-day until further notice.

Taylor Walls Delivers Walk-Off Two-Run Single

Tampa Bay Rays shortstop Taylor Walls finished off a big comeback effort on Thursday, as the Rays scored three in the bottom of the ninth to steal a win from the Texas Rangers in a 4-3 victory. Walls' hit actually didn't leave the infield, but some sloppy defense from the Rangers allowed Junior Caminero to score from second and end the game. The 28-year-old finished the game 2-for-4, giving him his first multi-hit game since May 8. Walls is definitely not known for his bat, and that has been evident this season. He now has a .193 AVG, .507 OPS, 17 runs, one homer, 12 RBI, and seven swipes in 135 at-bats this year. There is no need to roster Walls in any fantasy format.

Taylor Walls Starting on Sunday

Tampa Bay Rays shortstop Taylor Walls (groin) is back in the starting nine on Sunday when the Rays face the Toronto Blue Jays. Walls has been held out of the starting nine over the past three contests due to groin soreness. Prior to his injury, Walls had posted a modest .206/.300/.235 slash line with just one extra-base hit over his last 11 games. This afternoon, he will cover shortstop and is slated to bat in the seven-hole. Under the hood, the Florida State product has generated a .260 xwOBA, .208 xBA, and a .280 xSLG, which place him in the third, fourth, and first percentile, respectively. Fantasy managers should expect Walls to continue to see most of the starts at shortstop. This afternoon, he is best to fade in DFS given his slow start to the campaign.
