The Los Angeles Angels have signed pitcher Tayron Guerrero to a minor-league deal. The right-hander hasn't appeared in the big leagues since the 2019 season, when he worked to a 6.26 ERA across 52 appearances with the Marlins. Most recently, he struggled to a bloated 11.51 ERA across 20 appearances with Triple-A Louisville in the Reds organization. The 32-year-old has appeared in 113 MLB games between the Marlins and Padres, working to a 5.77 ERA while struggling with his control by way of an elevated 13.6% BB%. The attraction to Guerrero is largely tied to his power arm, as he has averaged 99 mph on his four-seam fastball in his MLB career, a pitch he has used 79.2% of the time.
The Cincinnati Reds signed free-agent right-hander Tayron Guerrero to a minor-league deal on Saturday that includes an invitation to major-league spring training. Guerrero has three years of big-league experience, but not since 2019 with the Miami Marlins. The 31-year-old spent the 2022 season in Japan with the Chiba Lotte Marines, going 3-3 with a 3.52 ERA, 1.17 WHIP, three saves, 63 strikeouts and 20 walks in 46 innings over 49 relief appearances. In his three major-league seasons, Guerrero has a 5.77 ERA (5.08 FIP), 1.66 WHIP and 22.5 percent strikeout rate in 113 relief appearances covering 106 innings. He will represent relief depth for the Reds entering the 2023 campaign.
Miami Marlins relief pitcher Tayron Guerrero had 11 pitches that touched at least 100 mph in the game against the Braves on Friday night, and he is raising questions as to whether he could work his way into the closer role. He spent the offseason working on his secondary pitches to complement his upper-90s fastball. Drew Steckenrider, Sergio Romo and Adam Conley are the candidates for the ninth inning right now with Miami going with the matchups in save situations, but Guerrero could be forcing his name into the mix. His four-seam fastball is averaging 98.5 mph and his slider is averaging 87.8 mph, according to Statcast. Guerrero is throwing his fastball 73.2 percent of the time and his slider 25 percent. While Guerrero isn't a name to grab in fantasy leagues just yet, you might want to keep his name handy if you're in need of saves later on.
