Nationals Claim Tsung-Che Cheng Off Waivers

The Washington Nationals have claimed shortstop Tsung-Che Cheng off waivers from the New York Mets. Cheng will now land with his third team of the offseason after being designated for assignment by the Mets last week. The 24-year-old figures to offer organizational depth and is hopeful for a bounce-back season in 2026. Last season, Cheng slashed .207/.305/.267 with 36 RBI and 20 stolen bases in 110 games in the Pittsburgh Pirates minor league system. He'll look to earn a bench role with the Nats during Spring Training.

He'll now head to New York after putting up a lackluster campaign in Triple-A Indianapolis last season. Cheng slashed .207/.305/.267 with one home run, 36 RBI, and 20 steals in 110 games in the minors in 2025. He figures to serve as organizational depth in the minors to begin the season.

Rays Designate Tsung-Che Cheng for Assignment

Tampa Bay Rays infielder Tsung-Che Cheng was designated for assignment by the organization on Monday. He was claimed off waivers by the Rays from the Pittsburgh Pirates last week. The Rays needed to open up roster spots after acquiring infielder Brett Wisley and pitcher Ken Waldichuk in a trade with the Atlanta Braves. Cheng spent the majority of his time in the minor leagues last season. He slashed .207/.305/.267 with one home run, 36 RBI, and 20 steals across 110 games in Triple-A. The 24-year-old has above-average speed and should be able to find another opportunity elsewhere.

Jared Triolo Goes On Injured List, Tsung-Che Cheng Being Promoted

Pittsburgh Pirates infielder Jared Triolo (back) is being placed on the 10-day injured list on Monday with lower-back soreness and the team is promoting infield prospect Tsung-Che Cheng to the major-league roster in a corresponding move, sources tell MLB.com's Alex Stumpf. Per MLB Pipeline, Cheng is the team's No. 17 prospect. The 27-year-old Triolo was serving in a utility infield role with playing time at second, first and third base while going just 1-for-17 with a run scored before his injury. His back injury was initially deemed pretty mild, so he could return to Pittsburgh when he's eligible to come off the IL in mid-April. In the meantime, Cheng will take his place as a utility infielder for the Bucs. The 23-year-old Taiwanese infielder had gone only 1-for-14 with a walk and six strikeouts in five games for Triple-A Indianapolis before getting his first major-league call-up.
