Carl Lawson News
New York Jets defensive end Carl Lawson is frustrated with his current role on the team. The 28-year-old has been a healthy scratch in two of the first six games of the season. When active, Lawson has three tackles and zero sacks so far. Lawson believes that he can contribute more than he has been able to. He's probably right considering he registered 33 tackles and seven sacks with the Jets last season. It wouldn't be surprising to see the Jets attempt to move Lawson at the upcoming trade deadline.
New York Jets head coach Robert Saleh said he's unsure if defensive end Carl Lawson (back) will be ready for Week 1 of the regular season. Beyond Lawson, John Franklin-Myers, Jermaine Johnson, Micheal Clemons, Bryce Huff and first-rounder Will McDonald are the team's options at edge rusher entering the 2023 regular season. The 28-year-old Lawson has dealt with a back injury during training camp and isn't expected to return to practice this week, putting his availability in question for the start of the season this year. Lawson missed all of the 2021 season due to injury in his first year in New York, but he returned last year to produce 33 tackles (18 solo), seven sacks, nine tackles for loss, 24 QB hits, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery in 17 starts.
New York Jets defensive end Carl Lawson agreed to a restructured contract on Thursday, according to a source. Lawson was due a non-guaranteed $15 million this year, but he'll now be due a base value of $9 million, with $8 million of it guaranteed. Lawson will have $3 million more available in incentives. The restructure creates $12.7 million in salary cap space in 2023 for the Jets. The 27-year-old is entering his second year for Gang Green in 2023 after he had 33 tackles (18 solo), seven sacks, nine tackles for loss, 24 QB hits and a fumble recovery in 17 regular season games in 2022. Lawson should once again have a pretty prominent pass-rushing role for the Jets' improved defense this year.
