Shewmake is now on his third team this offseason after being designated for assignment by both the Royals and Chicago White Sox. The 27-year-old former first-rounder by the Atlanta Braves in 2019 out of Texas A&M University will merely serve as organizational infield depth for the Yankees if he sticks around beyond spring training. He made his major-league debut in 2023 with the Braves but only played in two games before appearing in 29 games in 2024 with the White Sox. In 67 plate appearances in the majors last season, Shewmake went 8-for-64 (.125) with a homer, four RBI, five stolen bases and 10 strikeouts. If he sticks around with the Yankees, he'll likely start the 2025 campaign at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Shewmake does have a strong glove on the infielder and came up as a shortstop, but he's most likely to open the season at Triple-A Omaha on the farm.

If Shewmake finds a new club, he will likely spend most of the 2025 campaign in the minor leagues given his struggles in the big leagues.

However, Shewmake has impressed this spring by hitting .292 (7-for-24) with two doubles, a triple, four RBI and a run scored in 11 Grapefruit League games. The former first-rounder hit just .259/.316/.399 with a .715 OPS, seven home runs, 25 RBI, 37 runs scored and nine stolen bases in 76 games for Triple-A Gwinnett in 2022 and would probably benefit from some more time down on the farm.
