Marlins Optioning Braxton Garrett to Triple-A

The Miami Marlins will option left-hander Braxton Garrett to Triple-A Jacksonville on Wednesday, a source told Jordan McPherson of The Miami Herald. Garrett joined the big-league rotation after left-handed pitching prospect Robby Snelling (elbow) landed on the injured list, and he had a rough return to the big leagues, allowing five earned runs while walking five and striking out three in just 1 1/3 innings in a loss on May 14 against the Minnesota Twins. Garrett made his second start for the Fish in an 8-4 loss to the division-rival Atlanta Braves on Tuesday, allowing two earned runs on three hits while walking three and striking out two in only three innings to lower his season ERA through two starts to 14.54. The 28-year-old southpaw was slightly better on Tuesday, but it still wasn't a great showing, and the Marlins want him to go back to the minors to work on some things. It is unclear who will be considered to take Garrett's spot in the big-league starting rotation with Snelling facing an extended absence.

Is Braxton Garrett a Worthy Buy-Low Waiver-Wire Target?

Miami Marlins starting pitcher Braxton Garrett had a rough outing in his first big league start of 2026 on Thursday, allowing five earned runs and five walks in just 1 1/3 innings of work against the Minnesota Twins. After missing the entire 2025 season due to elbow surgery, Garrett opened 2026 in Triple-A. With Marlins left-hander Robby Snelling (elbow) recently hitting the injured list, Garrett appears to have an extended runway to re-establish his place in the Miami rotation. While Garrett's start against Minnesota was obviously not ideal, he pitched to a 2.30 ERA and a 0.80 WHIP with a 26.2% strikeout rate across 31 1/3 minor league innings before getting called up. The 28-year-old also has a track record of MLB success, logging a 3.66 ERA and a 1.15 WHIP with 156 strikeouts across 159 2/3 innings in his last full big-league season in 2023. In deeper leagues, Garrett could be a worthy buy-low pitcher to target on the waiver wire for fantasy managers.

Braxton Garrett to Take Open Spot in Marlins Rotation

Kyle Sielaff of Marlins.TV reports that the Miami Marlins are calling left-hander Braxton Garrett from Triple-A Jacksonville to take the vacant spot in the starting rotation that was created when the team placed left-handed pitching prospect Robby Snelling (elbow) on the injured list on Wednesday. Garrett will make his 2026 season debut for the Fish and start against the Minnesota Twins in Thursday's series finale. The 28-year-old southpaw missed the entire 2025 season due to elbow surgery, but he was looking great on the farm with the Jumbo Shrimp before his call-up, posting a 2.30 ERA and 0.80 WHIP with 32 strikeouts and 15 walks in 31 1/3 innings pitched at Jacksonville. It's unclear how long Snelling will be sidelined, but it will most likely be an extended stay on the IL, paving the way for Garrett to potentially stick around in Miami's rotation for a while. Fantasy managers in deeper leagues should absolutely consider picking Garrett up off the waiver wire, and he's rostered in just 6% of Yahoo leagues.

Is Braxton Garrett Nearing a Return to the Major Leagues?

Miami Marlins starting pitcher Braxton Garrett is one of the team's top options to take over an open spot in their rotation. Struggling starter Chris Paddack was designated for assignment on Tuesday, opening up his scheduled spot on Friday. Garrett made seven starts for the Marlins in 2024 but missed all of 2025 after elbow surgery. He didn't earn a spot in the rotation out of spring training but is still on the 40-man roster, which gives him an advantage over Robbie Snelling, who is also a candidate to join the rotation. Garrett has looked sharp in his five Triple-A starts this season, allowing five earned runs on just six hits in 25 1/3 innings for a 1.71 ERA and 4.57 FIP. While he doesn't offer the elite strikeout upside Snelling brings for fantasy, Garrett seems more likely to get the promotion based on his roster status. Keep a close eye on who moves into Miami's rotation since both lefties have looked good enough to be waiver wire options if they get the call.

Braxton Garrett a Pitcher to Stash as Marlins Evaluate Starting Rotation

The Miami Herald's Barry Jackson reports that both Miami Marlins starting pitchers Braxton Garrett and Robby Snelling are the top options at Triple-A Jacksonville if the Marlins decide that right-hander Chris Paddack needs to miss some starts. The Marlins plan to evaluate Paddack from a health standpoint after a drop in velocity in his start on Sunday against the Philadelphia Phillies, in which he gave up seven runs on six hits while walking three and striking out only one in 2 2/3 innings. The 30-year-old veteran could be put on the injured list if he's not fully healthy, or the Marlins could have him miss a few starts. Manager Clayton McCullough said Paddack will start on Friday against the Washington Nationals, but only if he's healthy. Garrett, a 28-year-old lefty, is only rostered in 4% of Yahoo leagues right now. The former seventh overall pick in 2016 has looked good at Jacksonville so far, posting a 1.71 ERA, 0.68 WHIP, and 26:12 K:BB across five starts (26 1/3 frames). He's probably only worth a speculative pickup right now in NL-only leagues.

Marlins Option Braxton Garrett to Triple-A

The Miami Marlins optioned left-hander Braxton Garrett to Triple-A Jacksonville on Friday, according to Isaac Azout of Fish on First. It means that right-hander Janson Junk has won the fifth starter role in Miami to begin the year. Garrett has more fantasy upside because of his strikeout potential, but the Marlins have decided to give the 28-year-old southpaw a longer runway to begin the 2026 season after he missed the entire 2025 campaign due to left-elbow surgery. In two Grapefruit League appearances this spring, Garrett allowed three earned runs while walking three and striking out three in four innings pitched. Durability has been an issue with the former seventh overall pick in 2016, but he showed plenty of potential in 2022 and 2023 in Miami with a 3.63 ERA, 1.18 WHIP, and a 246:53 K:BB in 247 2/3 innings over 48 outings (47 starts). Fantasy managers in 12-team leagues can probably ignore Garrett for now, and those stashing him in deep-mixed and NL-only affairs must practice patience and expect plenty of workload management in 2026.

Janson Junk, Braxton Garrett Battling for Final Rotation Spot

Miami Marlins pitchers Janson Junk and Braxton Garrett are now battling for the fifth and final starting-rotation spot to begin the 2026 season, according to Barry Jackson of The Miami Herald. Junk is being built up as a starter and will get one more Grapefruit League start this week before spring training wraps up. Garrett, who has a 6.75 ERA this spring, is trying to return to form after having elbow surgery back in December of 2024. Sandy Alcantara, Eury Perez, Chris Paddack, and Max Meyer are Miami's other locked-in starting pitchers. The 28-year-old Garrett, the former seventh overall pick in 2016, is the more attractive deep-league stash, but the Marlins might prefer to ease him into action after he missed the entire 2025 season. Junk, meanwhile, was decent for the Fish last year, posting a 4.17 ERA, one save, a 1.14 WHIP, and 77 strikeouts in 110 innings. He might be best as a long-reliever/swingman for Miami, though, and he has a weak 17.5% career strikeout rate in five MLB seasons.

Braxton Garrett on Track to be a Full-Go in Camp

Miami Marlins left-hander Braxton Garrett (elbow), who missed all of last season while rehabbing from his second Tommy John surgery, is expected to be a full-go for spring training, according to MLB.com's Christina De Nicola. Garrett was in the Marlins' starting rotation before his left-elbow injury, but he hasn't pitched in a major-league game since June 17 of 2024. The 28-year-old southpaw is a former first-rounder (seventh overall) and has shown flashes of upside in Miami, and he should be a lock for the No. 4 rotation spot in 2026 behind Sandy Alcantara, Eury Perez, and Max Meyer (hip) if he's fully healthy by Opening Day. The Marlins traded both Edward Cabrera and Ryan Weathers this offseason, leaving three open rotation spots to begin the 2026 season. Garrett held a 3.66 ERA with 156 K's and 29 walks in 30 starts. There's talent in Garrett's profile, but the volume is unlikely to be there in his first season back from TJ surgery.

Braxton Garrett Plays Catch on Monday

Miami Marlins left-hander Braxton Garrett (elbow) played catch for the first time on Monday before the series opener against the division-rival Philadelphia Phillies since having Tommy John surgery last December, according to MLB.com's Christina De Nicola. It's a big milestone for the 27-year-old southpaw, although he will not be in play to pitch in the big leagues this year, even if his rehab progresses at a rapid pace in the second half. The goal for Braxton and the Marlins is to have him fully ready for spring training next February. In addition to having TJ surgery, the former first-rounder in 2016 had an internal-brace procedure. In his only full season in the big leagues in 2023, Garrett went 9-7 with a 3.66 ERA and 1.15 WHIP with 156 strikeouts and 29 walks in 159 2/3 frames over his 31 outings (30 starts). He has had TJ surgery twice already on his left elbow.

Braxton Garrett To Miss 2025 Season Following Elbow Surgery

Miami Marlins left-handed starting pitcher Braxton Garrett (elbow) will miss the entire 2025 season after having left-elbow UCL revision surgery that included an internal brace back in December. This is really bad news for an already thin Marlins starting rotation. Ace Sandy Alcantara (elbow) is also recovering from Tommy John surgery. Garrett made only seven starts for the Fish in 2024 after missing several months with a strained left forearm. The 27-year-old southpaw suffered a setback with his left elbow while throwing a bullpen in September, which eventually led to him going under the knife. Garrett had Tommy John surgery back in 2016 shortly after he was drafted as well. The good news is his internal-brace procedure should speed up his recovery, but for a pitcher with his extensive injury history, there's no guarantee he'll be ready for 2026.
