Chris Murphy Begins Throwing Program

Boston Red Sox left-handed reliever Chris Murphy (elbow) started a throwing program last week as he rehabs from Tommy John surgery that he had back in April of this year. Murphy will be rehabbing all offseason and will not be ready to roll for the start of spring training in February or for the start of the 2025 regular season. However, barring a setback with his left elbow, the 26-year-old southpaw should be able to contribute in a relief role for the Red Sox at some point next season. The former sixth-round selection in 2019 out of the University of San Diego made his big-league debut in 2023 as a multi-inning reliever and went 1-2 with a 4.91 ERA (3.70 FIP), a 1.41 WHIP, one save, 49 strikeouts and 17 walks in 47 2/3 innings out of the bullpen for the BoSox.

Chris Murphy Undergoes Tommy John Surgery

Boston Red Sox reliever Chris Murphy (elbow) underwent successful Tommy John surgery on Wednesday. The procedure was performed by renowned elbow expert Dr. Keith Meister in Arlington, Texas. Murphy's 2024 season comes to a conclusion before it began after he appeared in 20 games with the Red Sox in his MLB debut last season. The 25-year-old worked to a 4.91 ERA in that time, but his 3.70 FIP, 3.88 SIERA, and rock-solid 15.1% K-BB% all indicate he was far better than his surface ERA suggests. However, he did struggle to a 6.32 ERA across 15 outings (nine starts) with Triple-A Worcester as well. Murphy is likely to miss a good chunk of the 2025 campaign given the timing of the surgery.

Season-Ending Surgery Expected For Chris Murphy

Boston Red Sox left-hander Chris Murphy (elbow) is going for a second opinion to confirm his initial diagnosis of a high-grade UCL tear in his left elbow, and season-ending surgery is expected. We don't know yet if Murphy will actually have Tommy John surgery, but either way, his 2024 season is likely over before it even started. The 25-year-old southpaw reliever made his major-league debut for the Red Sox in 2023 and went 1-2 with a 4.91 ERA (3.70 FIP), his first career save, a 1.41 WHIP, 17 walks and 49 strikeouts in 47 2/3 relief innings over 20 appearances out of the bullpen. Murphy was much more effective as a multi-inning reliever in Boston than he was as a starter for Triple-A Worcester in 2023, as he had an ERA over 8.00 with 25 walks in 36 2/3 innings.

Chris Murphy Has "Damage" In His Elbow

Boston Red Sox left-hander Chris Murphy's (elbow) MRI exam showed ligament "damage" in his elbow, according to manager Alex Cora. It's not good, obviously, and means the 25-year-old southpaw won't be on the team's Opening Day roster out of camp. A decision on whether he'll need surgery on his elbow will come in the next few days. Murphy had been competing for a spot in Boston's bullpen as a left-handed arm. If he's forced to go under the knife, it could put an end to his entire 2024 season before it even starts. Murphy was taken in the sixth round of 2019 out of San Diego and made his big-league debut in Boston last year, recording a 4.91 ERA, a 1.41 WHIP, his first career save, 17 walks and 49 strikeouts in 47 2/3 relief innings.

Tayler Scott Opening, Chris Murphy Playing Bulk Role On Sunday

Boston Red Sox relief pitcher Tayler Scott will function as the opener for Sunday's game versus the Oakland Athletics. Fellow reliever Chris Murphy will piggyback off him and operate as the long man. Boston seeks for the hurlers to eat some innings with their injury-depleted rotation and one game remaining before the All-Star break. With Scott (7.71 ERA, 1.57 WHIP) unlikely to work more than an inning or two, Murphy (1.98 ERA, 1.10 WHIP) represents the preferred option for desperate fantasy managers turning to this situation on Sunday. Even so, neither arm signifies an exciting stream despite a very tempting matchup vs. the hapless A's.

Red Sox Call Up Chris Murphy

The Boston Red Sox recalled left-handed pitching prospect Chris Murphy from Triple-A Worcester on Tuesday and optioned pitcher Kaleb Ort to the minors in a corresponding move. Murphy, who is listed by MLB Pipeline as the team's No. 14 prospect, will initially work out of Boston's bullpen, which won't make him attractive to fantasy managers in redraft leagues. The 25-year-old southpaw could eventually make a spot start, but he currently has a rough 7.71 ERA, 1.92 WHIP, 25 walks and 42 strikeouts in 39 2/3 innings over 10 appearances (nine starts) for Worcester. Murphy has the upside of a back-end starter in the big leagues, and he relies mostly on a four-seam fastball and changeup to get hitters out.

Chris Murphy To Be Called Up Tuesday

The Boston Red Sox plan to call up left-hander Chris Murphy on Tuesday. Murphy is expected to get a start against the Cleveland Guardians later this week while also being available out of the bullpen on Tuesday, if needed. Murphy has made nine starts for the Red Sox in Triple-A Worcester this season, posting a 1-3 record, 7.71 ERA, and 9.53 K/9 across 39 2/3 innings of work.
