Ethan Small Makes Rehab Appearance Over The Weekend

San Francisco Giants left-hander Ethan Small (oblique) threw one scoreless inning and gave up a hit in a minor-league rehab outing in the rookie-level Arizona Complex League on Saturday, July 20. Small was acquired from the Milwaukee Brewers over the offseason and was in the running for a bullpen spot in San Francisco before suffering a moderate right-oblique strain. The 27-year-old southpaw has yet to pitch for the Giants in 2024 but is nearing a return and could be a relief option for the Giants in the big leagues down the stretch. When he's activated from the 60-day injured list, he could also be sent to Triple-A Sacramento. In his two seasons with the Brewers the last two years, he had an 8.71 ERA, a 2.61 WHIP, one save, 13 strikeouts and 10 walks in 10 1/3 innings. Small is well off the fantasy radar.

Ethan Small Starts Rehab Assignment

San Francisco Giants left-hander Ethan Small (oblique) was sent out on a minor-league rehab assignment on Tuesday at the rookie-level Arizona Complex League. Small hasn't been able to pitch in the big leagues at all this year due to a Grade 2 right-oblique strain that he suffered in spring training, but he's working his way back and is now ready to appear in game action in the minors. The 27-year-old southpaw is probably going to need a full 30 days on his rehab assignment because of his long layoff, and even when he's healthy, there's no guarantee that he'll be pitching meaningful innings for the Giants in the big leagues. Small made his big-league debut with the Brewers in 2022 and has an 8.71 ERA and 2.61 WHIP with 13 K's and 10 walks in just 10 1/3 innings in parts of two seasons in Milwaukee the last two years.

Ethan Small "Still A Ways Away"

San Francisco Giants left-hander Ethan Small (oblique) is "still a ways away" from returning, manager Bob Melvin said on Tuesday. Small has not responded well to throwing after suffering a moderate right-oblique strain. He was acquired from the Milwaukee Brewers in the offseason and was in the running for a bullpen spot before suffering the injury during spring training. The 27-year-old southpaw is on the 60-day injured list and may struggle to make it back before the All-Star break at this rate. Small made a full-time move to a relief role last year with the Brewers but only pitched in relief in two games in the majors, allowing five earned runs on nine hits with two walks and six strikeouts in four innings. He's allowed 10 earned runs in just 10 1/3 innings for Milwaukee since debuting in 2022.

Giants Trade For Ethan Small

The San Francisco Giants acquired pitcher Ethan Small from the Milwaukee Brewers Monday for cash considerations, per NBC Sports Bay Area's Alex Pavlovic. The 26-year-old lefty spent most of his 2023 out of the bullpen with Triple-A Nashville, compiling a 3.18 ERA, 1.25 WHIP, and 28.5% strikeout rate in 51 innings pitched. It remains to be seen what role the former first-round pick will play for the Giants, but his fantasy forecast is low for the time being.

Ethan Small Designated For Assignment

Milwaukee Brewers left-handed pitcher Ethan Small has been designated for assignment. This move creates space on the 40-man roster for Joey Ortiz and DL Hall after they were acquired in exchange for Corbin Burnes on Thursday evening. Small is a former first-round pick but struggled in limited action over the last two seasons. Through 10.1 innings in the majors, he has allowed 10 earned runs and 10 walks while striking out 13 batters. He fared better at Triple-A but still posted a 1.26 WHIP and 4.24 BB/9 there last year. The Brewers will have one week to trade Small or place him on outright waivers. Given that he has one option remaining, it seems likely that teams with open 40-man roster spots will consider adding him, even if it means sending him to the minors.

Ethan Small To Serve As Long Reliever

Milwaukee Brewers manager Craig Counsell said that left-hander Ethan Small will work as a long reliever in spring training, with his status as a lefty working in his favor. Small made two starts in his MLB debut in 2022 and allowed five earned runs on eight hits while walking eight and striking out seven in just 6 1/3 innings of work. It's a bit disappointing that Small won't be given a chance to earn a rotation spot with Aaron Ashby (shoulder) set to open the season on the injured list, but Small could earn that opportunity down the road if he makes the Opening Day bullpen and pitches well in a long-relief role. Other than Small, the Brewers only have left-handers Hoby Milner and Justin Wilson as candidates for their bullpen.

Ethan Small Called Up Monday

The Milwaukee Brewers recalled left-handed pitching prospect Ethan Small from Triple-A Nashville on Monday and designated right-hander Connor Sadzeck for assignment in a corresponding move. Small made his big-league debut for the Brewers on May 30 against the Chicago Cubs, allowing two earned runs on four hits while walking four and striking out four in 2 2/3 innings. He's expected to make his second MLB start on Tuesday against the Minnesota Twins. Small is the club's No. 8 prospect, per MLB Pipeline, but he'll be a very risky fantasy streamer in just his second major league start. The 25-year-old southpaw has gone 6-4 with a 3.34 ERA, 1.24 WHIP, 81 strikeouts and 40 walks in 72 2/3 innings over 15 starts for Nashville this year.

Ethan Small Strikes Out 10 In Triple-A

Milwaukee Brewers pitching prospect Ethan Small has impressed ever since being selected in the first round of the 2019 draft. The 25-year-old currently ranks eighth among the team's prospects, according to MLB Pipeline. His heater doesn't have overwhelming velocity, but it has enough spin and action in the upper region of the zone to baffle hitters. He also has a great changeup that might be his best pitch. Beyond these two offerings, Small deploys a pair of breaking balls, but neither has proven to be effective just yet. Small likely needs to harness these third and fourth offerings before we can confidently project him as a worthwhile MLB starter. He has just one big-league game under his belt: a two-run, 2.2-inning affair back in May. Although Small still needs to work on his repertoire, the southpaw has looked great in the minors this season. During his start on Saturday, he lasted seven innings, allowing just one run, three hits, and one walk. Most impressive was the fact that he struck out 10 batters in the process, boosting his strikeout metrics to an impressive 10.80 K/9 in 2022.

Brewers Calling Up Ethan Small

The Milwaukee Brewers are calling up left-hander Ethan Small from the minors, according to sources. The 25-year-old had a 1.88 ERA at Triple-A Nashville this year and has a 1.78 ERA and 177 strikeouts in 136 2/3 innings in the minors since being drafted in 2019. Small could fill a very important role in Milwaukee's starting rotation this year given Freddy Peralta's lat injury. MLB Pipeline has Small listed as the team's No. 7 prospect, and the southpaw should make his major league debut in one half of the team's doubleheader against the Chicago Cubs on Monday. Small had a 1.88 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 49:21 K:BB in 38 1/3 innings in his last eight starts at Nashville, and he deserves fantasy attention in all leagues if he sticks in Milwaukee's rotation.

Ethan Small Could Be A Call-Up Candidate For Milwaukee

Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Ethan Small could see some time in the majors during the second half of the season, according to Jon Morosi of MLB Network. General Manager Matt Arnold said that the team will be looking to acquire bullpen help at the trade deadline, and mentioned Small as a possible candidate for a call up. A first round pick in 2019, Small has been electric over 77 career innings in the minors, going 3-2 with a 1.52 ERA, 1.078 WHIP and 36.1 percent strikeout rate. He's currently shutdown from throwing while dealing with a strained tendon in his left middle finger, but when he returns to action he could be a very interesting option in SV/HLD formats if he gets called up.
