San Diego Padres starting pitching prospect Dylan Lesko has begun to find his footing at High-A since allowing a season-high seven earned runs on June 8. In his past three starts, the 79th-ranked prospect in baseball on MLB Pipeline holds a much improved 2.04 ERA, 1.02 WHIP, and a 7:20 BB:K. During this stretch, Lesko has struck out at least seven batters twice, with a season-high of nine punchouts in his most recent outing on June 29. In addition, he has begun to improve his command. In two of his three recent starts, he allowed just two free passes, whereas before, he averaged three in each start. Overall, through his first extended look at High-A ball, the former 15th overall pick sports a 5.66 ERA, 1.49 WHIP, and 41:62 BB:K. While the right-hander has disappointed this season, it is a great sign to see him begin to lower his walk rate and improve his ratios. Going forward, he should still be considered one of the better right-handed pitching prospects in baseball and remains on track to meet his 2026 big league ETA.
San Francisco Giants second baseman Thairo Estrada (wrist, thumb) began a hitting program prior to Thursday's series finale against the hosting Atlanta Braves, and he will continue his progression during this weekend's series in Cleveland against the Guardians. Estrada is recovering from discomfort in his left wrist and thumb, but if he doesn't need a brief minor-league rehab assignment before returning to the Giants' infield, he'll be a candidate to be activated from the 10-day injured list promptly following the Midsummer Classic in mid-July. The 28-year-old Venezuelan infielder was batting just .231 (68-for-295) with a .640 OPS, nine home runs, 39 RBI, and one stolen base while regularly hitting in the lower part of San Fran's lineup in 77 games prior to the injuries, so he's not necessarily a must-stash player in shallow fantasy leagues. In the meantime, the lefty-hitting Brett Wisely will serve as the primary second baseman.
Chicago Cubs relief pitcher Adbert Alzolay (forearm) has built back up to throwing bullpen sessions, per pitching coach Tommy Hottovy. Alzolay is "progressing well", and he will continue tossing bullpens for the time being before ramping up to facing hitters later in July. On the 60-day injured list with a right flexor strain, Alzolay is working toward becoming an option to rejoin Chicago's beleaguered bullpen sometime either in late July or early August following a minor-league rehab assignment that should begin sometime in the next couple of weeks. In 18 appearances this season, the 29-year-old right-hander has an uninspiring 4.67 ERA with 13 strikeouts, six walks, and six homers allowed in 17 1/3 innings and lost his closing job to veteran Hector Neris early in the year. Neris has saved 11 games for the Cubs in 2024, rattling off four consecutive scoreless appearances since June 22.
San Diego Padres manager Mike Shildt said ahead of Friday's game against the division-rival Arizona Diamondbacks that starting pitcher Yu Darvish (groin, elbow) will not return to the rotation until sometime after the mid-July All-Star break. There was some uncertainty surrounding Darvish's availability this week after he suffered a setback with right elbow inflammation amid his recovery from a strained left groin, but the Padres' skipper confirmed on Friday that the veteran right-hander won't be back until late July at the earliest as the club opts to take things cautiously. The 37-year-old five-time All-Star should still remain stashed in all fantasy leagues, as he recorded a solid 3.20 ERA (3.51 FIP) and 1.06 WHIP with 53 strikeouts and 15 walks over 56 1/3 innings (11 starts) in San Diego's rotation before going on the injured list for the second time this year.
New York Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said that catcher Francisco Alvarez (elbow) is fine after being hit by a pitch on his left elbow in Friday's blowout loss to the hosting Pittsburgh Pirates. "We'll see what we got. That was pretty scary there," Mendoza said following the game. Alvarez was in significant pain after taking a 99-mph fastball from Pirates right-hander Paul Skenes off his left elbow on Friday, but he was able to stay in the contest the rest of the way. While it doesn't sound like a significant concern at this time, Alvarez's elbow could swell up overnight and threaten his availability for the remainder of the weekend. It sounds like the 22-year-old slugging backstop is going to be re-evaluated, making his status certainly something to monitor ahead of Saturday's matchup with Pittsburgh. In 134 plate appearances for the Mets this year, Alvarez is slashing a promising .292/.358/.492 with four home runs, 10 doubles, 23 RBI, and one stolen base.
Minnesota Twins third baseman Jose Miranda continued his ridiculous string of success in Friday's loss to the visiting Houston Astros, racking up four hits with a home run and two RBI. Before lacing an RBI double to left field to give the Twins a 4-3 lead in the fifth inning, Miranda slugged a solo homer to left field off Astros opener Shawn Dubin to tie the game up at 3-3. It's been a historic run at the plate of late for Miranda, who recorded a hit in 10 consecutive at-bats over his last three games in Friday's defeat. The 26-year-old former top prospect is coming into his own and burgeoning his way up fantasy rankings, slashing an excellent .324/.364/.529 with nine dingers, 20 doubles, 42 RBI, and two stolen bases through 238 at-bats this season. Miranda is swiftly becoming close to a must-roster player while star third baseman Royce Lewis (groin) sits on the injured list.
Washington Nationals second baseman Luis Garcia Jr. kept his foot on the gas in Friday's loss to the visiting St. Louis Cardinals, piling up four hits with a home run and a stolen base in the defeat. Following an RBI single in the first inning, Garcia gave the Nats a 5-0 lead with a solo homer off Cardinals ace Sonny Gray in the third frame. The 24-year-old infielder now has six RBI in his past two appearances, going 10-for-24 (.417) with three round-trippers and two stolen bases over his last seven outings. Providing a decent level of speed and pop as Washington's everyday second baseman, Garcia is starting to command more attention in deeper mixed and NL-only fantasy leagues.
Detroit Tigers second baseman Colt Keith had the first two-homer game of his career in Friday's narrow win over the hosting Cincinnati Reds. After launching a towering homer off Reds right-hander Carson Spiers to right-center field, extending the Tigers' lead to 2-0 in the third inning, Keith left the yard again in the fifth frame to give Detroit a 4-0 lead. It still hasn't been a great rookie season overall from the 22-year-old lefty-hitting infielder, who's slashing .240/.285/.361 with seven big flies, nine doubles, 28 RBI, and four stolen bases across 281 plate appearances in 2024. With that said, Keith is picking up some steam with three consecutive multi-hit efforts.
Philadelphia Phillies shortstop Trea Turner put on an incredible offensive display, hitting two home runs in Friday's 8-6 victory over the division-rival Atlanta Braves. After hitting a 459-foot two-run homer off Braves left-hander Max Fried to left field to extend the Phillies' lead to 3-0 in the fourth inning, Turner tagged the southpaw once more for a solo shot to push the advantage to 5-2 in the sixth frame. The 31-year-old All-Star infielder has been amazing for fantasy managers when healthy this season, batting a torrid .341 (71-for-208) with seven long balls, 22 RBI, 43 runs scored, and 11 stolen bases over 49 games. Since coming off the injured list on June 17, Turner has hit safely in 14 of his 17 outings.
Houston Astros second baseman Jose Altuve (hand, wrist) left the game early on Friday against the hosting Minnesota Twins after being hit by a pitch on his left/hand wrist area. Altuve was removed from the contest in eighth inning after talking with a team trainer. The 34-year-old veteran helped his fantasy managers by going 2-for-4 with an RBI and a strikeout in the game before hitting the showers early. He'll likely undergo X-rays at the stadium, and we should have a better idea of the severity of his injury later Friday night or by Saturday morning. Altuve has been a beast this year, hitting .308 with 13 homers and 13 steals in 2024, so losing him for any amount of time would be a big blow for the 'Stros and fantasy managers. Mauricio Dubon replaced Altuve at second on Friday and would likely become the team's primary second baseman if Altuve goes on the injured list. UPDATE: X-rays revealed no fracture, and Altuve was diagnosed with a left-hand contusion.
Arizona Diamondbacks left-hander Jordan Montgomery (knee) will throw on flat ground on Saturday, according to manager Torey Lovullo. Montgomery still has some inflammation in his right knee, but Lovullo said the team is anticipating he'll be good enough to throw on Saturday. The 31-year-old southpaw could start throwing off a mound again soon if his throwing session goes well this weekend, but Montgomery won't rejoin Arizona's starting rotation until after the All-Star break in mid-July. After helping the Texas Rangers win their first-ever World Series championship last fall, Montgomery signed with Arizona late this spring and has been a disaster in his first 13 starts, posting a 6.44 ERA and 1.67 WHIP with 45 K's and 23 walks in 65 2/3 innings. He currently has a career-low 15.1% strikeout rate and has seen his walk rate increase from 4.9% in 2023 to 7.7%.
